25.01.2022 What an amazing event we had, exceeded our expectations with a final total of 1901 entries representing 37 nations. There were 481 international competitors and, with participants at two Antarctic bases, the event reached all seven continents (plus Iceland and New Zealand) which we believe may well be a world first! #keepwellkeepsafe #seehighcountry #worldloppet #skisport #fallscreek

25.01.2022 Following our first Hoppet 2020 Do It Your Way celebrity, who was the inaugural winner, Betsy Youngman, we are very excited to announce our next celebrity participant for 2020, Anders Aukland! Celebrity status doesn’t get much bigger than the undisputed King of Norwegian Marathon Skiing and it started for Anders in 1993 in Australia where he won the 3rd staging of the Kangaroo Hoppet. For those that can remember, it was the first time we were on the high course around Mt Mc...Kay and it was tough! Not too tough for Anders who beat a highly credentialed field including Andre Jungen (SUI, Hoppet winner in 1995), Ales Vanek (CZE, Hoppet winner in 1998) and future world and Olympic Champion Odd-Bjorn Hjelmeset (NOR). Top Aussie was the young but indomitable Anthony Evans who was beaten in sprint for the podium by Vanek. So what did Anders achieve after winning the Hoppet? Well, it’s been so much that we just have to generalise. Anders has won all the big marathons in the world including the Vasaloppet, Birkebeiner Rennet, Marcialonga, won Olympic and World Championship gold medals, won a stack of World Cups, founded a successful marathon team and has just generally been a great down to earth approachable bloke. An inspiration to many, even down here in the southern hemisphere! Anders continues to impress. At age 47 he is still competitive in elite marathon skiing placing 8th in the 2020 Vasaloppet, 7th in the Jezerska and 5th in the 2019 Marcialonga. Unbelievable. We welcome Anders to our event in 2020 and look forward to seeing his name in the participants list. Please register here to join Anders in our 2020 Hoppet Do It Your Way or gjør det på din måte Go Anders! #worldloppet #fasterskier

22.01.2022 Our next celebrity is the CEO of Worldloppet, Epp Paal Many Worldloppet skiers will know Epp as she has travelled to all of the events and is a regular participant while in attendance. Epp holds WL Master # 4581, of which the 2014 Kangaroo Hoppet was the sixth event completed. But it is WL administration that Epp has made the big contribution. Starting as the administrative secretary under the Secretary General, then moving into the CEO under the current WL President, Juha V...iljaama, Epp has been the key driver behind many of the innovations and expansions of the Worldloppet. Without question Epp is also the life of the party away from the ski tracks. As Marso and Ben can attest from the annual WL AGM's, Epp is always the last to bed and, well, maybe not the first to arise in the morning, but she is definitely in better shape than anyone else. The WL office is in the beautiful Estonian city of Tartu, also home to the Tartu Marathon. While Tartu hosts many great events throughout the summer, it is inline skating that is Epp's choice to complete the 42km Virtual Hoppet. Let's face it, the season that we are having here in Australia, inline skating is looking like a good option even for us! Thanks for participating this year Epp and we look forward to virtually joining you in August. #worldloppet #skisport #fiscrosscountry #brightandsurrounds

18.01.2022 BIB #1000 goes to Peter Ritchie! Peter has been XC skiing for over 30 years and is a long time member and past president of Melbourne Nordic Ski Club. Peter mainly enjoys back country skiing and you could find him spending many a weekend snow camping on the High Plains. Memorable trips include hauling a pulk with 40kg of food for a week at Johnson's hut and skiing to Kelly's hut with winds gusting to 150km/h in waist deep spindrift. (not everyones cup of tea!) #worldloppet #skisport #fiscrosscountry #brightandsurrounds

16.01.2022 Our 8th, and third last, Hoppet 2020 Celebrity is the amazing and evergreen Peter Schlickenrieder (Schlicki) from the beautiful Bavarian town of Schliersee. Now Schlicki has had an amazing career as a skier, as well as for just being Peter Schlickenrieder, but for us Antipodeans we remember him for quite an amazing win in the Kangaroo Hoppet in 1994. Skiing through the field in the second half of the race, Schlicki took the win from highly credential opponents including Andre... Jungen (2nd just one second behind SUI), Taoufie Khamitov (3rd RUS) and Czech world medallist Martin Petrasek. Top Aussie, as was often the case, was Ant Evans in 10th. Schlicki did go on to do a bit more in skiing after the Hoppet....including winning silver in the Sprint at the 2002 Winter Olympics, winning World Cups, winning other marathons including the prestigious Engadine Ski Marathon in the Engadine Valley. While Schlicki was achieving this, we in Australia were cheering for him as if he was our own. Such is the popularity of the effervescent Peter S. After skiing, and this term is used only as a hiatus, it was hard to keep up with Schlicki's movements. Being a TV personality and celebrity all over Germany and the Alps as well as completing some outrageous mountain bike rides over many thousands of kilometres have kept Schlicki fairly busy. However, he is now the head coach of the German XC Ski Team leading into the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. We wish you all the best Schlicki and will be cheering for your German athletes to take more silver medals, just after the Australian golds. Thanks for being part of the 2020 Hoppet - Do It Your Way and we look forward to seeking you again Down Under sometime soon! #worldloppet #fiscrosscountry #skisport @peterschlickenrieder

14.01.2022 Our next Hoppet 2020 Do It Your Way Celebrity is our evergreen colleague from across the Tasman, Mary Lee! Mary is well known to so many people in southern hemisphere skiing as the driving force behind all things cross-country in New Zealand. The Lees are so well known for developing skiing terrain in NZ by first setting up Cardrona then establishing the Snow Farm, the only dedicated XC area in NZ. The Snow Farm is an amazing purpose built paradise for XC skiers and is a m...ust for every XC enthusiast from around the world. But in Worldloppet circles, Mary is best known as the key driver behind the Merino Muster, NZ’s Worldloppet event. The Muster, named after the practice of mustering merino sheep at the first fall of snow, is an incredible experience and such a positive celebration of XC in NZ. While Mary has completed all the Hoppet Events starting in 1994 the 7km supporting the junior team, 42km in 2013 and the 21km in 2015, it is her son Sam who famously has his name on the 21km Australian Birkebeiner trophy from 1998 when he beat future dual-Olympian Paul Murray in a sprint for the victory. I'm planning with a group of Waiorau Nordic Ski club members to ski at Snow Farm the 21km Birkenbiner and then compete in the 42km Merino Muster the next weekend said Mary from her lovely base in Wanaka in NZ. Welcome aboard Mary and we look forward to sharing our event with you! Photo attached: Mary (back row just right of centre red hat) doing what she does best; skiing with a large group of ladies that are all having a great time! #worldloppet #skisport #fiscrosscountry #brightandsurrounds

14.01.2022 Saturday 22 August 2020. Hoppet race officials all dressed up with no place to go .... except to the Mount Beauty Bakery with take away coffee the only choice.

12.01.2022 Hi friends, can you find yourself in the picture gallery on Worldloppet web? (If you have good shots from your hoppet, just send them to me or to [email protected] and we upload it to the website!)

12.01.2022 Our next Hoppet 2020 Do It Your Way celebrity entrant is another local home-grown Aussie World Champion. Welcome to the 2020 Hoppet Britt Cox! While we don’t often see Britt out on the XC trails past Windy Corner, everyone entering Falls Creek will be familiar with Britt’s smiling face after becoming the 2017 World Moguls Champion in Sierra Nevada, Spain. Britt followed that up with the Crystal Globe for overall World Cup Champion as well. Throw in 3 Winter Olympic Games, a... load of World Cup wins and many more international and domestic accolades and you have an absolute skiing superstar. Britt grew up skiing at Falls and her parents, Graeme and Karen still lodge manage during the winter, but now she spends her time between training and competing on the international stage. Even though bumps and gravity are now Britt’s constant companions she did grow up attending the Falls Creek Primary School and was part of the great XC skiing program that the school conducts every winter. Soaking up the kilometres for the 2020 Hoppet will be easy for Britt as endurance training is a big component of the freestyle program. Please make our home grown World Champ Britt feel a big welcome from the XC community for the 2020 Hoppet! #worldloppet #skisport #fiscrosscountry #seehighcountry

10.01.2022 As our Hoppet 2020 Do It Your Way is concluding this weekend it’s a great time to reflect on how so many people have connected through various activities and also to recognise our allocation of the number 1 bib. Our previous 9 allocated numbers have included past winners of the event, XC Olympic medallists, world champions from other sports and people intrinsically linked with what Worldloppet skiing is all about. The 2020 Hoppet Do It Your Way number 1 bib is for Marg Ha...yes who typifies what Worldloppet is all about - travelling around the world to cross country ski marathons and making new friends and meeting old friends along the way. Many people in Australia and around the world will know Marg for the prodigious number of events that she has participated in. For the Hoppet, Marg is the only woman who has completed all 29 Hoppets, which is an amazing achievement and she is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. While Marg may have only logged one activity for the 2020 Hoppet the event organisers can attest that she has regularly been logging 42km throughout the event window in a number of activities (even in some of the outrageous weather we have experienced in south east Oz!). Hoppets aside, it is Worldloppet skiing where Marg has been an inspiration. Over the years Marg and her partner Bruce Wharrie have completed absolutely countless events and in the process Marg has become a Worldloppet Master 7 times and Bruce 6 times. An amazing achievement given the scale of travel that is required from the southern hemisphere! However, there is no question that after Sunday when the event has formally closed, Marg will still continue to be active in our great outdoors and be an inspiration to people of all ages. Thank you Marg and everyone for being part of our event in 2020! #worldloppet #skiaroundtheworld #fiscrosscountry #skisport #seehighcountry #marcialonga

10.01.2022 After your virtual Hoppet, and maybe also your virtual Merino Muster and Ushuaia loppet events, it is now time for your next virtual adventure. After having to ...cancel their 2020 event last April at short notice due to Covid-19 our Worldloppet friends at the Fossavatnsgangan in Iceland have decided to make good use of their 2020 medals and hold a virtual event starting next Sunday and running until the end of the month. As with our Hoppet 2020 Do It Your Way, wherever you are in the world, you can bike, run, ski, skierg, rollerski, swim or walk the Fossavatnsgangan. 09.01.2022 Awesome race if anyone is interested, challenging to say the least!

09.01.2022 Our penultimate Hoppet 2020 Celebrity is our beloved defending champion Iris Pessey from France. Well, we say Iris is from France, but there are a lot of Aussie XC skiers that happily call Iris as Australian as Vegemite and Camembert cheese. Okay, Camembert is not really Australian but it does improve the taste of just plain Vegemite, as most things do. Although to be honest, there are things that you scrap of the sole of your shoes that would improve the taste of Vegemite, s...o that is no great achievement. But what a great achievement was Iris’s victory in the 2019 Hoppet. Skiing solo for most of the event is a tough ask for anyone in the field, but doing it while being marked as the leader is an outstanding results. Such has been the presence of Iris at Falls Creek for the previous three years it felt like a home-town victory. However, Iris won’t get the chance to go for victory number 2 this year as she is ‘trapped’ in France with partner Phil getting ready for the 2021 European winter. Trapped in this case needs a rather broad scope as there are much worse places to be than the spectacular Chamonix Valley where trail running and mountain climbing are the pastimes of choice during the summer months. Iris is also a globally competitive mountain and trail runner and splits her time between work and winter and summer elite sporting activities. Welcome to the 2020 Hoppet Do It Your Way, Iris and we look forward to seeing you again for the 2021 event in Falls Creek. 05.01.2022 Our next Hoppet 2020 Celebrity is a local and one of two home grown World Champions in our field in 2020! Welcome Paul Van Der Ploeg our local world champion mountain bike rider! While Paul is best known for winning the 2013 World MTB Eliminator, and also just famous for, well just being Paul van der Ploeg, he does come from a very well known Australian skiing family. Paul, the youngest of five vander boys, has three older brothers who were Australian XC Skiing Champions.... Dan (also 2nd in the Kangaroo Hoppet in 2003), Mark and Neil all won XC champs over a long period of domination and Mark went on to represent Aust at a couple of World Championships as well. Anyone around Mt Beauty will recognise parents Gerry and Jenny who are out on their bikes most days. But we're focussing on Paul, who admitted to skiing the Joey as a young boy and actually crashing off the course at the first corner! Such a long and outrageously successful MTB career must have seemed easy for Paul. Of course Paul will be on the MTB for his 2020 Hoppet adventure (try not to crash Paul...) but one thing you can guarantee; he will definitely make it fun! Our photo of Paul is one that many people will recognise; Paul flying through the air and disappearing off into the distance.... Thank you for being part of our event in 2020 Paul and hopefully we will see you back on skis in 2021! #worldloppet #seehighcountry #fiscrosscountry #skisport

03.01.2022 Our latest Hoppet 2020 celebrity entrant has been involved with the event since 1990, not a bad effort since the first Hoppet was held in 1991. Bib number 6 goes to Tom Duffy from Hayward Wisconsin, home of the American Birkebeiner, where Tom is still a member of the Board after more than 40 years involvement with the event. Tom has been involved with the Worldloppet ski federation since its inception in Uppsala (SWE) in 1978. Tom and his wife Carol have completed some 45 Wor...ldloppet events between them with Carol holding Worldloppet Master medal #1 and Tom medal #3. Tom’s involvement with the Kangaroo Hoppet began at a Worldloppet meeting in Hämeenlinna (Finland) in June 1990 when the Australian International Ski Marathon was a candidate for membership of the international series. The meeting appointed Tom, along with Robert Steiner (AUT) and Rolf Kjaernsli (NOR) to visit the 1990 event and decide if it was good enough to become the eleventh member of Worldoppet. They gave the OK for the event to join, but recommended that the name be changed as Worldloppet already had two Birkebeiners (the original Birkebeiner in Norway and the American one) and a couple of international ski marathons (the Engadine in Switzerland and the Sapporo in Japan). After much discussion, allegedly involving some good North East Victorian red wine, the name Kangaroo Hoppet was created. Tom came back to Falls Creek for the first 1991 for the first Hoppet, bringing a number of his friends from Hayward to swell the international field, and visited again in 1992.
