25.01.2022 There are so many mis-truths in this campaign, which will actually have extremely perverse outcomes in terms of animal welfare by reducing the number of kangaroos that are sustainably harvested by accredited harvesters. Kangaroo harvesters undergo rigorous training and accuracy testing and follow a strict Code of Practice with regard to humane approaches. Kangaroos are overabundant and their numbers need to be managed so shutting down markets will merely ensure that MORE k...angaroos will be killed by farmers under damage mitigation permits or possibly even killed illegally. Campaigns such as this one are actually going to ensure far WORSE outcomes for kangaroos.......They will just be killed as pests and wasted rather than being respected and utilised as a fantastic source of protein. #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource #sustainable #StopTheLies See more

25.01.2022 Hello? Are you in there?

25.01.2022 A film that we shared on this page a few times last year, Australia's Hidden Shame, has been selected for the International Social Change Film Festival in Chicago, which will run as a virtual festival from September 26 to October 24. This represents an important opportunity to undo false narratives about kangaroo populations that are being perpetuated on the international stage. Feel free to view and vote for this film to increase its chances of receiving an international award. #trueroostory #kangaroo

25.01.2022 Of course Aboriginal people have been depicting kangaroos in art for 60 000 years, but these early colonial paintings are rather interesting. Kangaroos must have seemed so bizarre to the early settlers...... #kangaroo

24.01.2022 This poor woman - what a horrible experience. Was it really the Sarah Jessica Parker perfume - how odd!!!

23.01.2022 We live in a modern world with managed landscapes, whether they be urban landscapes, agricultural landscapes or areas managed for conservation. The truth is that human activity affects native wildlife and we need to think holistically about how to manage that in the most humane and sustainable ways. It's funny how city dwellers are quick to tell farmers just to live with the 30-50 million kangaroos that inhabit their farms in any given year. The national estimates only inc...lude kangaroos counted in commercial harvest zones which is basically all farmland - not national parks, not the Northern Territory, ACT or Tasmania and before 2020 not Victoria either. I wonder whether all Melbournites should get out and return the landscape to the native wildlife? That's what activists propose for kangaroos everywhere else....... #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource See more

22.01.2022 What a fantastic philosophy to teach the next generation. #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

22.01.2022 A beautiful story, but when kangaroo populations explode on Australia's modern rangelands without the regulation of predation, it can have devastating impacts.....Kangaroos need to be managed as a natural resource in balance with the natural resource base and modern ecosystems within which they inhabit. #kangaroo #kangaroosasaresource

21.01.2022 What a specimen! Ever seen a roo this big? This muscly fella was spotted in Millbrook near Albany, WA. : Eilidh St John via ABC Great Southern

21.01.2022 This is the sort of misleading animal rights activism that stakeholders who advocate for sustainable management of kangaroos are faced with. As an example, Mark Pearson MP claims that almost 90 million kangaroos have been killed for commercial purposes in the last twenty years (see below). This is incorrect. The actual harvest over this period was 42,031,258 kangaroos (2009 - 2018). For a balanced, pragmatic approach to kangaroo management, follow the Kangaroo Management Taskforce on Facebook and the Web.

20.01.2022 World Animal Protection have released a 2020 Guide to Christmas Hams to encourage consumers to purchase Australian products that are grown under higher animal welfare standards. Thanks WAP, I'll certainly be following the guide when purchasing my ham. On another note, ALL kangaroo products are grown in Australia under highly regulated animal welfare protocols.......just saying..... #Kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

18.01.2022 Yes, let's help the rest of the world understand the important role that rangelands and pastoralists play in maintaining biodiversity and the sustainable production of food and fibre. Considering that rangelands represent 40% of the world's land-mass and around 75% of Australia's - they're very poorly understood by the general public. #rangelandsrock #yearoftherangelandsandpastoralists

18.01.2022 How did the current drought event take shape? See the Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) animation below to watch how the drought has evolved since 2017. The dro...ught started expanding rapidly in mid-2017 and intensified in 2018. Recent months have seen some relief, but the drought is still far from over in many areas. For more about the CDI and drought maps, visit the EDIS website https://edis.dpi.nsw.gov.au/ If you're heading towards drought recovery, visit the Drought Recovery Hub for guidance and advice to help support primary producers. www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/recoveryhub Don’t forget the Drought Hub www.droughthub.nsw.gov.au and Bushfire Hub www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/bushfires are also available to support those who are still drought affected or impacted by bushfires. #nswdpi #primaryindustries #strongerprimaryindustries #drought #recovery #droughtaffected

17.01.2022 Fantastic to see kids enjoying Traditional bush food and eating local produce such as kangaroo and emu. All Australians should follow their lead - 50 000 years of culture, traditional knowledge and wisdom can't be wrong! #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

16.01.2022 The revised National Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos and Wallabies for Commercial Purposes has been released today. The revisions to the code follow on from an extensive consultation process and incorporate new animal welfare research, changes to harvesting strategies and public perception of the industry. Please share widely. Western Local Land Services Pastoralists' Association of West Darling #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource #thecode

15.01.2022 Most urban people probably underestimate the important role that farmers play in conservation, particularly in rangelands pastoral enterprises where livestock are grazed on native pastures. This recently published article explores the potential for improving conservation of threatened native fauna through the erection of pest exclusion fencing on agricultural lands. Fences can assist through reducing predation and in reducing competition for habitat, even from other native fauna such as overabundant kangaroos. #farmercustodians #rangelands #kangaroo

15.01.2022 An interesting paper that explores how pest exclusion fences erected on agricultural land could benefit the recovery of threatened native fauna through excluding predators and reducing overgrazing from competitive species, including kangaroos. For this and a huge range of other research papers relevant to kangaroo management, check out the KMT website Literature page https://kangaroomanagementtaskforce.com.au/literature/

14.01.2022 A kangaroo with his own Tinder page -only in Western Australia!! #kangaroo

12.01.2022 The NSW Government announced recently that small businesses could claim up to $1500 in rebates for government fees and charges as part of the Government’s COVID-19 stimulus and recovery plan in the 2020-21 NSW Budget. The KMT is sharing this as we think that kangaroo harvesters and other related businesses should be eligible for this rebate and will keep you posted as more information becomes available. #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

12.01.2022 Could the next State of Origin game be decided because of the actions of an over-assertive kangaroo? #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

11.01.2022 It doesn't get more "Australian Made" than kangaroo leather belts. #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

11.01.2022 Should be an interesting episode of Australian Story tonight with Charles Massy talking about regenerative agriculture. #regenerativeagriculture

10.01.2022 It's not well understood in urban areas but kangaroo grazing can impact conservation efforts. That's why this post-bushfire initiative on Kangaroo Island includes kangaroo-proof fencing to protect key revegetation areas. #kangaroo #kangarooisland #nativebutcanstilldamagetheenvironment

09.01.2022 Animal cruelty should never be tolerated. See the KMT website (https://kangaroomanagementtaskforce.com.au/protected-nativ/) to understand animal welfare legislation in your state and know how to report incidents of animal cruelty.

09.01.2022 For all those living in WESTERN NSW this newsletter has updates about events and opportunities available through Western LLS.

09.01.2022 This newly published paper explores the impacts of overabundant kangaroos (and introduced rabbits) on conservation efforts in semi-arid reserves. The KMT has long held that better management of kangaroos is vital for maintaining, or regenerating, landscapes - particularly in the semi-arid rangelands. As stated in this paper, management of kangaroos is often avoided as they are native animals and their grazing is considered a natural process but this is having adverse ecological outcomes. #kangaroo Pastoralists' Association of West Darling Western Local Land Services Bush Heritage Australia

09.01.2022 Re-posting in the hope this link will open better. This is the first revision of the Code of Practice since 2008 so we are keen to ensure you can all access it.

07.01.2022 The Kangaroo Management Taskforce supports the humane and sustainable use of kangaroos as a resource but absolutely deplores all acts of animal cruelty. We hope the perpetrators of these awful crimes are caught and held to account. If you want to learn more about the animal cruelty laws in your state head to our website https://kangaroomanagementtaskforce.com.au/animal-welfa/ite. https://kangaroomanagementtaskforce.com.au//animal-welfare/

06.01.2022 Gotta love the USA - if the madness of their recent election debacle wasn't enough to make you scratch your head, did you know that there are states in America where you can legally own a kangaroo without a permit? That's not even allowed in their country of origin, Australia, where kangaroos are protected native fauna and cannot be harmed or "owned" without a permit. In Australia the Crown is responsible for 25 - 50 million kangaroos in any given year and the landholders on whose properties the majority of kangaroos are feeding and breeding don't even own them. Please note: the KMT does not vouch for the reliability of the website from which this information is sourced. We are just surprised that such a map even exists - only in America. #kangaroo

06.01.2022 Oh dear, look at all that booze strewn across the road! Once again, Transport NSW, the police and insurance agencies are warning drivers about animal collisions - 9 out of 10 of which involve kangaroos. * Slow down when you seen animal warning signs * Stay alert and expect the unexpected * Brake safely and never swerve It is often safer to collide with the animal than lose control of the vehicle.... #9outof10animalcollisionsinAustraliainvolvekangaroos #kangaroo See more

06.01.2022 Look at this mighty fellow! We are always looking for photos of kangaroos to use on our FB page and website, so if you have photos or videos of big 'roos, or big mobs of 'roos you'd be happy to share, please post them in comments. We will always make sure to acknowledge you as the photographer. www.kangaroomanagementtaskforce.com.au #kangaroo

05.01.2022 Excellent article exploring the complex and sensitive topic of elephant management. The issues are slightly different but the need to balance the conflicting needs of different stakeholder groups is very similar to that facing those trying to improve kangaroo management in Australia. #kangaroo #kangaroosarearesource

04.01.2022 Well, this is just ridiculous. Hundreds of thousands of kangaroos are culled for damage mitigation in Australia every year and left to decompose in paddocks. Surely it is far more sustainable to use them as a resource instead of wasting them and NOT produce "fake kangaroo meat" in a laboratory! #kangaroo #kangaroosararesource

01.01.2022 Barley looking the goods for the Byrnes in NSW! Similar to the Pollard's story we posted about yesterday, Tim Byrnes has also transformed his wind eroded paddoc...k into an impressive crop of barley this year! Last years crop was completely eaten out by roos, which resulted in severe wind erosion. Tim dragged a big I-beam over the paddock across three different angles to level and then cultivated prior to seeding this year. Well done Tim! #MSFFieldDays #NSWSuccessStories #MalleeFarming
