Given yesterday's announcement on new hospitality restrictions, our tables will be arranged more sparsely as required. . Our big window and door will be opened, with ceiling fans running for better air circulation. Hand sanitizers and masks are always available should you need them. . We'd love to see you here, but if you don't feel like a Msian ...meal tonight, why not take your wallet and support other local restos in your area, if only for takeaways. 18.01.2022 Hi guys, hope you are keeping warm in this cold Melbourne summer . We have exciting updates to share! Many of you have asked for dinner options and to bring back our chicken rice! We hear you and we are planning to make them happen. Wheee! . Our menu will expand to include more yummy Malaysian delicacies, like keropok lekor, prawn spring rolls and laksa!! A vegan option for laksa will be available too. All of this is in the works so hold on tight for when our new menu drops ok! . But if you are craving for homestyle Malaysian food right now, come on over for a hearty serving of nasi lemak with chicken curry or rendang and other favourites! Keep warm and see you guys soon! .

16.01.2022 Hi guys! How are you today?! Our test-kitchen today came up with something special for the weekend. Home-style Nasi Goreng Kampung! Made from scratch, this is a dish suitable for pescatarians The core ingredients are prawns and dried shrimps, with crispy fried anchovies scattered over the top. Other accompaniments include fresh thinly sliced lettuce and long beans, a dollop of sambal, fried fish crackers, julienned egg omellete and refreshing cucumbers! A hearty meal, this is arguably the most popular nasi goreng in Malaysia. Many customers have asked for it so now we are ready to serve you our humble version of it. We will have it available tonight and throughout the weekend so don't miss out see you tonight!

16.01.2022 We are excited to introduce more Malaysian style cookies since the pineapple tarts last week. In the shop right now we have limited jars of pineapple tarts, 'semperit' with choc rice, kuih ros (rose crisps), and lincoln crisps. We sampled all of them with the team and they are all soo yuuuummy!! Just enough sweetness, so buttery and they melt in your mouth. Get yours now as they are limited and on a first come first serve basis. Hope to see you all soon ok!

15.01.2022 Hi guys, in store right now are limited jars of fresh and locally made pineapple tarts. These tarts are so buttery, they crumble right on the first bite. The makers of these tarts are so passionate in what they do, that's why the taste is oh so amazing. They were so popular during Hari Raya catering, we thought it's only right to offer them at the cafe as well We will slowly introduce more Malaysian style cookies soon! . Besides that, other snacks available all the way from... Malaysia include Super Rings (now viralling in Korea), Terengganu made fish crackers (from my parents hometown of Dungun) and Famous Amos chocolote chip cookies sooo yum! . 13.01.2022 Fried Mee Siam. One of the more popular items on our menu. It's vermicelli noodles fried with a mix of sauces and sambal (non-spicy as default) You can have it either vegetarian or vegan without the egg. Recently we've been experimenting and adding vegan popcorn chicken to add some crunchiness to the meal Not many of our long time customers realise its actually vegan, so I think our vegan recipes are authentically close to the original If you haven't had a Mee Siam before, come and give it a go. You won't regret it!

12.01.2022 Hi guys! Such a drastic change in temperature from yesterday huh? haha don't we #lovemelbourne . We are opening again tomorrow with additional menu items. Last week we brought back our chicken rice (by popular demand) and introduced our special laksa - the soup is vegan but the toppings can be either vegan or non-vegan.. your choice! We try to match as closely in taste as the original home-style recipe so we hope you all will like it . Other than that, our currypuffs ha...ve gone traditional again by being deep fried instead of baked. The flavour comes through so much more and there is no risk of the filling and pastry going dry, and that's how we like it. Every now and then different ways are tested to tweak and improve our food quality so that you all will have an amazing time over good food . Here is a photo of our vegetarian gado-gado with home made peanut sauce (mum's recipe). It's one of the more popular things on our menu since the start. It has a good combination of colorful vegetables and different textures for those who want a more calory-deficit lunch . Recently we added more sprouts and deep fried lotus root slices to the mix. 05.01.2022 Hi guys!! We are soo excited to announce we will be opening for dinner starting tomorrow, from (Thurs - Sat, 5pm-9pm) . Currently applying for byo license, but we do have other refreshing drinks to satiate your parched throats such as our house-made Teh (tarik) Ais, Ice Lemon Tea, an assortment of kombuchas, Chrysanthemum tea and more. Highlight - A couple of nights ago we had the pleasure of hosting this awesome group of guys to celebrate a birthday. It was fun to organise and everything pretty much flowed as we had hoped. We served a mix of vegan & non-vegan options with refreshing home-made drinks to down it all with. Seeing customers enjoying a good time over our home-style food makes us happy, so it was delightful to make this special night happen. So starting today, we bring you a selection of seasonal cakes and pastries from @cremornestreetbakers which go very well with our @st_ali coffee. These cakes are a mixbag of vegan and gluten free options. Tried and tested - so yummy! Alongside that, there is the seri muka (weekend only) and currypuffs to boot. So if you are a...fter some sweet or savoury bites, we got you covered . On hotter days, the AC is on so you can comfortably sit inside for a cool catch up with friends over coffee, cakes and lunch. 03.01.2022 Good morning peeps! Happy Sunday! It's been a relatively quiet week at Kantan cafe, but we are making the most of this down time planning our new next steps. Here is a photo of our laksa. The vegan soup is made from scratch, with tofu puffs, seared eggplant, sprouts, egg, herbs, fried wontan skin etc. You also have a choice of either seared vegan mock meat or other options. Very hearty and we highly recommend it during the cooler summer days like today . And if you need som...ething refreshing, we got you covered with our house-made teh tarik, lychee cooler, iced lemon tea and iced citrus tea! If you require a caffeine hit, our St Ali Coffee will do the trick there will be more . So why don't you make a day of it at Kantan for some home-style hearty Malaysian food made with love! 01.01.2022 Hi guys! Today was a bit a mad rush for lunch. Thank you for your patronage and support When there's a sudden arrival of customers all at once, it's a bit hard to cook and dish food out in a timely manner, especially when there is only two of us in the kitchen So we thank you soo much for your patience . The last thing we want is to rush food out that isn't the best quality. Having said that, it seems the star dish today is roti jala with chicken curry So here's a picture of it the next time you want to try! We're also experimenting in the shop today new things to go on the menu soon, one of which is a vegan laksa. Woot woot! Enjoy the day guys! X

It's been a while since we posted, but now that reno works and fit outs are all done, we want to officially announce that Kantan is opening its doors again starting tomorrow night! . Thanks to all our tradie friends who did a fabulous job, and a bigger thanks to our friend @jileqa from @growmemelb who pushed and helped us with the reno designs. Thank you thank you! . We're now able to accommodate more people comfortably - all table seating , and finally able... to use our nice communal table made by @bushmandavedesigns for bigger bookings. . Last but not least, our fantastic landlord and their family who have been nothing but supportive toward our business regardless of lockdowns. We are so blessed to be around such kind-hearted people . Yesterday was a particularly special day for our landlord, so we prepared a buffet style spread for their family and guests. So proud and honored to have hosted this meaningful function in our new and improved restaurant. . Our opening times have changed, as we focus more on dinners, functions ane catering so please take note of the new trading hours. 08.12.2021 Hi guys! Happy free-out-of-lockdown to us all. Such a nice spring morning too. While we miss serving you all some home-style Msian food Kantan still won't be able to open until all reno works are completed. We didn't anticipate things to open up quickly so the original reno timeline is still in place. . We really appreciate all bookings and catering inquiries that came in. Unfortunately the kitchen is also closed so we have had to regretfully turn down each one. However, it's very heartening to see your support for our small business. Thank you so so much! You guys are the best . We shall keep you updated with our reno progress. It's kind of halfway done. In the meantime, why don't you go and support other local businesses around you. We know we will! 21.11.2021 Hi guys! What a sunny spring day! Hope you are soaking up much of the D. It's been a while since we posted, having been closed for the lockdown so we'd like to tell you what's been up . Kantan is undergoing reno works right now - something that had been in planning since the lease was signed last year. We inherited the restaurant set-up (you would know if you've dined with us) from a previous business, which was a high-end pastry shop. . As a new business, we wanted... to make the most of what's available to us (to save costs) and see if selling home-style Malaysian food could really take off, bearing in mind that none of us has had the necessary experience to cook commercially and run a restaurant business. It was high-risk but in the end, we took the big plunge. . During the ups and downs of the pandemic, we were able to sustain our business enough to know that it can work (thanks to you all ). We also learned that the set-up we inherited wasn't ideal for our customers. Bar seating wasn't a favourite, indoor tables were limited, walking around the big counter/prep area was a bit awkward etc. And so, a decision was made to transform the place into something a bit more comfortable for staff and customers alike. . Hopefully after this renk, we will see much more breathing space and comfortable table seating inside. We could host private parties, themed nights etc. At least that's the idea! . It's early days in the reno, but check out some of these photos. You'll see how big the whole area is without the front counter and prep area. 14.11.2021 Hi guys! Hope you are all doing okay, as okay as can be... This extended lockdown, we will be taking a break from our nightly takeaways. We wish this will all blow over sooner than later so we can see you again for a nice hot sit down meal at Kantan. . Importantly, please go and support other local eateries that are still open during this lockdown. Although the streets are eerily quiet at night, these shops are still open and they will be so happy to see you, as we had been. Take care, be safe, get nourished and wake us up when August ends

07.09.2021 Happy weekend guys! We had the pleasure of catering for the @icv this week, a surprise farewell to the GM who will be so missed by the organisation. Thank you for trusting us to do this modest yet meaningful set up. It was such a delight. . As we are heading into further easing of restrictions, hopefully Victorians will be able to enjoy getting together in bigger numbers again.. before the next lockdown in the meantime let's hope the sitch in NSW will get better soon

31.08.2021 Hi guys! How are you on this really chilly Friday? Johnston Street is pretty quiet - maybe people are rugging up indoors trying to keep warm and comfy . We started opening the resto again yesterday after our little covid scare. Everyone turned out negative after all . Wanna say massive thank you for the support yesterday. Weren't sure if business was gonna pick up again after the lockdown but you guys are a legend Props to you all. . Some photos of a birthday that we... catered for over the weekend. Our catering menu is a bit different to the resto's. Our old time client knew exactly what she wanted, which made it easy to whip something up such as fried pasta in dry curry, a cheese platter and chicken sandwiches. Altho we lost a lot of big catering gigs over the lockdown, we actually really enjoy small intimate ones like this . Keep warm and dry guys! Hope to see you all again here. We miss your faces See more
