15.01.2022 A great day sailing for a shake down... experimenting with reefing setup and combinations. ....winds at 18kn with gusts up to 24kn. Still have to tidy the mess at the mast - many ropes to trim. Then... on the way back... playing with self steering setup... managed to sail beam reach and broad reach with headsail (sheeted right in) and mizzen set further out... no main... with tiller lashed...maintained course for one full hour without touching the tiller... and a steady 6kn ...SOG. Nice.
03.01.2022 It was time for an antifoul. Having a closer look at the hull (some mould at the water line, spores under varnish in patches, water marks etc.), and knowing the hull hadn't been taken back to bare timber in 25 years, it was time to strip and reapply varnish before it gets out of control. Rallying the mates, with promises of beer and food, we started with varnish stripping. Shipwright Brendan Harvey of Harvey's Boat Co. overseeing and assisting. FYI, in total over 3 weeks...(for restoring topsides only), 43 hours of stripping varnish from topsides, 16 hours of sanding topsides after stripping, 5 hours of puttying seams, 14 hours sanding seams smooth again, 13 hours varnishing topsides.
