21.01.2022 The Kapooka Tragedy, one of the saddest days in Wagga's history occurred 21st May,1945. There was an explosion in a bunker at the Kapooka Army Base that took th...e lives of 26 engineers (2 sergeants, 2 corporals & 22 sappers). These photos show the funeral procession for those men heading along Edward St towards the Wagga Cemetery. The top photo was taken from the Wagga (now Astor) Hotel looking at the verandah of the Great Southern Hotel on the western corner of Baylis St. It was estimated that more than half the population of Wagga lined the streets in honour of the men. (Sharing Wagga Wagga & District Historical Society photos) Footnote; Just 2 hours after this was posted, several people had commented that, although they grew up in Wagga, they had heard nothing about this tragedy until now. 20.01.2022 Whilst being a musician in the Australian Army Band is a fantastic job, sometimes #OurPeople decide they want to explore other opportunities within the Army. Li...eutenant Acacia Cuthbertson is one of those people. After serving 7 years as a full-time trumpet player, Acacia commenced Officer cadet training at the Royal Military College (RMC) in Jan 2018. She was such a good student that at the end of her first year, she was appointed as the Company Sergeant Major of Long Tan Company, meaning she was the head cadet in charge of up to 87 other cadets. Acacia graduated from RMC last month, and although she misses playing music every day, she is excited about the prospects that await her as a newly comissioned officer with a posting back to her hometown of Brisbane. #GoodSoldiering #RMC #YourADF

17.01.2022 We understand the importance of our march out parades, and what they mean to our newest soldiers and their families. That’s why we are saddened to announce tha...t due to the important new restrictions on large gatherings, we are suspending our march out parades until further notice. This includes any previously planned live stream events. Our behaviours as part of Army must conform with National guidelines and with the expectations of the wider Australian community. We had previously planned to continue the parades in a format closed to spectators and live stream the event. However, as the pandemic and our understanding of it has developed, we have adapted accordingly and will continue to do so into the future. For the time being, graduating recruits will have their achievements recognised in an appropriate manner within Blamey Barracks. We are unfortunately unable to live stream these events. We realise this will be a great disappointment to our recruits and to their friends and families, but our priority must always be the health and safety of our people, their families and our wider community. 13.01.2022 The Army Recruit Course (ARC) has been revised to deliver a more lethal and effective all-corps combatant. Commanding Officer of the 1st Recruit Training Battal...ion (1 RTB) at the Army Recruit Training Centre Kapooka, Lieutenant Colonel Roger McMurray, said the ARC has been modified to establish the foundation for Army to prepare every soldier to be ready for the physical, mental and moral rigours of close combat. We are very fortunate to live in an advanced, respectful and relaxed modern society, but our challenge at 1 RTB is to draw people from that society and transform them into confident and capable soldiers. Our goal is to deliver world class foundation combatants who are physically robust, and possess grounded combat behaviours, ethics and values who are set up to succeed at their initial employment training and go on to execute Army’s mission, Lieutenant Colonel McMurray said. We focus on cultivating combat behaviours based upon four physical core skill sets; Combat Shooting, Army Combatives, Combat Physical Conditioning and Tactical Combat Casualty Care, underpinned by ethical decision making and the Army’s values of courage, initiative, respect and teamwork. Combat Behaviours will provide soldiers with the mindset and skillset essential for an Army in Motion. The new ARC sees recruits undertake some new training elements to build the foundation for their success as future combatants, while some training elements have been removed. The new elements of the ARC are hand-to-hand fighting skills through the Army Combatives Program (ACP), combat-focused marksmanship training utilising Army’s new rifle practices, the requirement to complete the All Corps Physical Employment Standards Assessment (PESA) to progress through the ARC, and foundation training in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence (CBRND). While drill and navigation remain essential elements of the ARC, some elements of these disciplines have been removed. A number of drill movements in slow time will no longer be taught, while aiming off, bypassing and conducting resections have been removed from the navigation syllabus. Physical fitness assessments remain unchanged, although the PESA is now a gateway for progression in the ARC. The Army Swim Test and the Basic Fitness Assessment are conducted, but remain diagnostic assessments only. 1 RTB has a big year ahead. 2019 requires the unit to train some 4500 part-time and full-time recruits for Armyan enormous responsibility that necessitates a considerable workload for staff. That stated, the opportunity to train the next generation of Army’s soldiers is one of the most worthwhile and rewarding opportunities that Army offers, Lieutenant Colonel McMurray said.
