24.01.2022 We have many more than five senses. Here’s how to make the most of them to enhance your wellbeing:

19.01.2022 And if interested, we can do some Creative Arts Why does Creative Arts Therapy work so effectively? Because it uses creative processes to help clients explore and express unconscious material that is often difficult to articulate in words. Creative Arts Therapy is a powerful tool to process complex feelings and find relief. These methods are innovative, participatory and practical. They provide a supportive space for participants to ‘try on’ and practise new behaviours..., and this can be more effective than merely talking about change. The creative process in therapy often contributes to a sense of clarity for the individual, leading to greater self awareness and understanding. Creativity harnesses the imagination and a sense of play. This can help those who have limited choices in their life to use the safe space of the therapeutic environment to learn to tolerate the uncertainty of the unknown, and to become more comfortable to be able to improvise and open up new possibilities in their lives. A key feature of the creative arts therapies is that the processes are often pleasurable. This means that using the arts we are more likely to practice new patterns of more healthy behaviour. Because Creative Arts Therapies are based on body awareness, they can effectively address the emotional-neurological connection, enhancing emotional expression, and psychological well-being. It is holistic attending to emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual well-being. Creative Arts Therapies is a powerful integrative healing tool we can explore in Holistic Counselling sessions. Creativity enhances the well-being of all people and is a natural aspect of our human experience.

17.01.2022 Search your heart for a minute: Are you holding any grudges? In the short term, grudges aren’t inherently a bad thing. Its perfectly natural in the moment and allows us to acknowledge, 'It’s not OK to be treated this way'. However, if that emotion turns into festering harboured resentment, it can disempower you and transform into unhealthy anger, causing harm both physically and mentally. Repeatedly recalling past feuds, injustices and events of suffering is called ruminatio...n. These feelings spike cortisol levels, a stress hormone. In this elevated state, blood pressure and heart rates rise while levels of oxytocin, the love and bonding hormone, are depleted (among other physiological changes). Letting go can be a long healing process, so don't beat yourself up for coming back to the grudge at times. It served a purpose, but its important to be mindful that it can be detrimental to your health. Though, how do we truly forgive and let go when a loved one has wronged us, to the point where we simply cannot overcome the pain we feel? Forgiveness brings peace understanding, empathy, compassion, and the kind of freedom that helps you go on with life. But rushing to forgive when we are not ready isn't always good for us either, as it can make us minimise our emotions. It's just as important to acknowledge your feelings with compassion and let yourself feel hurt. And when you're ready, you can bring your attention back to yourself, your experiences, your present, and what you hope to shape from this learning experience in your future. Looking inward with the help of a holistic counsellor may help you work through your feelings first, and once your own needs are met, you might be ready to go to work on forgiveness. No doubt this may need to be done repeatedly, and that's ok. It's far better to take your time and truly connect with your authentic heart. While the ideal prospect would be mutual forgiveness and reconciliation, we can't make people change, and sometimes there's no salvaging some relationships. However, you can forgive freely without excusing the harm done to you. Forgiveness is not a justice issue, we don't forgive others because they deserve it, it's a heart issue, and you deserve the freedom it can give you... it's critical for your emotional health. Sometimes we need to learn to recognise when it’s healthy to hold on and when it’s wiser to let go. Only you know what’s right for you in this moment, in your personal situation and only you can find the courage to honour your decision. Whatever you choose, open yourself up to joy, choose forgiveness (when you are ready), and gently set yourself free Kara x
