22.01.2022 NOTIFICATION: KARABI and the Coronavirus Currently, there is a global outbreak of novel Coronavirus (9COVID-19). Karabi has taken precautions with our venues, equipment and with our staff to ensure that all of programs and events are as safe as possible. If you have any concerns about attending a group at our centres or receiving a service from our staff or volunteers please call 02 9631 6575.... The following Flu like symptoms could be of concern, such as fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, tiredness and difficulty breathing; as a precaution isolate yourself from others in your home or accommodation. CALL your doctor or medical facility to discuss, before going to the doctor. Please only attend our centre facilities when you are cleared of all signs of this illness. ONE of the biggest things we can all do is to USE SOAP and WASH our HANDS. Soap directly changes a virus cell structure making it inactive according to the website www.virologydownunder.com and an article written by Dr Ian Mackay on Why does soap work so well on SARS-CoV2? According to the Department of Health, using good hygiene will help in the prevention of spreading infection rates: - wash your hands often with soap and water - cover your mouth when coughing / sneezing - avoid close contact with others, such as touching All centres have posters outlining how to prevent the spread of the virus for everyone to follow. If we all work together we may be able to prevent further spreading of this virus. YOU CAN GET MORE INFORMATION from: 1. National Coronavirus Health Information Line 1800 020 080 2. Website: NSW HEALTH www.health.nw.gov.au/infect/diseases/Pages/coronavirus.aspx

20.01.2022 COMMUNITY IMPACT As the Ability Links program comes to an end, the Mariyung Early Links team have partnered with ten organisations who they have wor...ked closely with over the years, spanning from South West to Western Sydney. Throughout the week, the Mariyung team have been meeting with the organisations to pass on the sensory tent kits so that the initiative can be continued within their communities. The idea for the Madang Gurung, Brave Child sensory tents came about in 2017, when an Early Linker saw the original Ability Links Including You tents and was inspired to adapt it for Aboriginal families. The sensory tents are used to provide a safe and inclusive sensory space for children and families to take time out and recoup when attending events like festivals and local community events. Mariyung Senior Linker Amber says, We have enjoyed connecting with families and providing a safe space for children to be able to relax at events they usually wouldnt attend. Each tent is equipped with calming sensory products suitable for children of all ages and abilities, in particular those with additional needs. These include weighted toys like the doll and snake in the below pictures, noise cancelling headphones, liquid timers, tactile and sensory toys. The Madang Garung tents also features cultural-specific toys and puzzles. Amber hopes the tents will continue be utilised by people of all abilities and make communities and community events more inclusive and in doing so, educate our communities on disabilities and promote inclusivity. Thank you so much to the following organisations and services for carrying our legacy, we are thrilled to see the sensory tents continue on with: Waranwarin Aboriginal Child and Family Centre Oorunga Wandarrah Save the Children Australia NGROO Education Yenu Allowah Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre Inc Karabi Community & Development Services Inc. 17.01.2022 CARING for our loved seniors during times of high heat. Do you care for an aged love one or work with seniors then the Department of Social Services advice for caring for our elderly during a heat wave may be of interest. BEFORE a heatwave occurs:... Assess which senioris at risk - who has limited capacity to keep cool; or which homes are prone to being hot; check cooling systems in homes are adequate and working effectively; ask relatives and friends to ensure seniors are cool and comfortable and appropriately dressed on hot days; offer extra support to seniors where family and friends are not available to assist; and provide contact details of your all those at risk to the local emergency services, where appropriate. DURING a heatwave: Continue to deliver care to our seniors - source additional staff, volunteers or family if required; be aware seniors may be at particular risk following high overnight temperatures; keep curtains and blinds closed in homes to reduce excess heat; make small amounts of fluids readily available to seniors; provide alternative forms of fluid, and discourage alcoholic or caffeinated beverages; encourage seniors to eat frequent small meals; encourage seniors to wear loose fitting clothing, use sunscreen and keep skin covered when exposed to direct sunlight; encourage seniors to seek shade when outside, and to avoid going out between l1am and 3pm; offer additional tepid showers or sponging; observe for signs of HEAT STRESS, such as nausea, and changes in appearance including red, pale or severely dry skin; and seek a medial assessment, either by a nurse, doctor or at hospital, if necessary, if a senior shows any signs of deterioration.

15.01.2022 SORRY DAY, 26th May 2020 TODAY is National Sorry Day, a day to acknowledge the strength of our Stolen Generation Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our first nations people and the nation as a whole. The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998 one year after the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament. The Bringing Them Home report was a result of a Government Inquiry into the past policies which caused childre...n to be removed from their families and communities in the 20th century. It was not until 13 February 2008 that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd addressed the nation to say Sorry to the stolen generations. His formal apology, on behalf of the successive parliaments and governments whose policies and laws "inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss of these to our fellow Australians". Rudd became the first Australian Prime Minister to publicly apologise to the stolen Generations on behalf of the Australian Federal Government. Since the establishment of Sorry Day, another important milestone in Australias history occurred on this date. On 26 May, 2017, at the conclusion of the 2017 First Nations National Constitutional Convention at Uluru, council member Megan Davis delivered the Uluru Statement from the Heart, a consensus document on constitutional recognition, developed by a 16-member Referendum Council of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community leaders. The Document calls for a "First Nations Voice" in the Australian Constitution and a "Makarrata Commission" to supervise a process of "agreement- making" and "truth telling" between the government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Please take a moment Today to remember and acknowledge the Stolen Generation and how we can support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

BLESSED with perfect winter weather, a group of our senior clients came together to walk, enjoy a cuppa and with mingle each other, and were pampered by our dedicated volunteers and staff members with individually packed "healt...hy snack pack", "thank you gift" as well as "Karabi original information booklet" which included information on MSK, exercise tips for seniors with musculoskeletal conditions, the COVID-19 safety info as well as some fun motivational quotes! WE also managed to walk around the block in small groups, between 9am and 1pm; a special thanks to everyone for keeping and practicing "social distancing rules" , we all raised just over $220.00 in total at the end of the day!! DESPITE many challenges we had faced to organise such an event under the strict COVID19 restrictions, the day was a huge success with many positive feedback. WE would love to thank everyone who came to support the cause, and our wonderful volunteers who helped to organise and run the event on the day, including sourcing healthy (but yummy) snacks and thank you gifts from FoodBank, putting the information booklet together, packing the snacks and gifts, setting up for the day, welcoming and assisting the participants, supporting the walkers, being a COVID19 safety monitor...the list goes on! AND a big thanks to our supportive management and co-workers who dropped everything for a day to support the event. KARABI looks forward to the next one, hopefully under much more relaxed conditions! At last, but not least, thanks to MSK Australia for ongoing support for people with musculoskeletal conditions toward improving quality of life. #mskaus
