24.01.2022 At a ceremony in Hobart today, the Royal Society of Tasmania (RST) and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) apologised completely and unreservedly for ne...arly 200 years of scientific, research and museum practices that resulted in immense hurt and suffering to Tasmanian Aboriginal people. There is ample, undisputed evidence that Aboriginal burial sites were violated, culturally important sites were desecrated, and that the remains of Aboriginal people were exploited and traded as artefacts, against community wishes. Both institutions placed on permanent record that these actions were real, they were morally wrong, and that such actions will never occur again. You can read more about today’s significant events, and access the full text of the apology statement, at the TMAG website here: https://www.tmag.tas.gov.au//apology_to_tasmanian_aborigin Images: Brett Torossi, Chair of the TMAG Board of Trustees, making the apology on behalf of TMAG; Mary Koolhof, President of the RST, making the apology on behalf of the Society.

20.01.2022 We keep hearing that everyone is tired, exhausted and in desperate need of a break......it's a consistent message across the community, our families and even our staff. We keep wondering if this is the way things will be forever or how things may look in weeks, months or years to come. When will we feel some kind of 'normal' or 'new normal' The COVID-19 outbreak has had a profound impact on our daily lives, adding to the mental load and internal list of priorities many of us ...are juggling day-to-day. As we try to manage our mental health and wellbeing, stay connected, and tend to our daily responsibilities, it's important we share the weight around and avoid taking on too much. It's OK to take a break, recharge, relax and unwind, in fact it's really important that we do For more information around mental health and the mental load, head to bb.org.au/2QDxB3B.

18.01.2022 MEET THE ARTIST Our third artist CHOSEN by Aunty Verna Nichols is Emma Robertson. Emma is a proud palawa woman with bloodlines connecting her to Fanny Chochrane...-Smith. The works Emma creates are part of her healing and her journey of creation. Emmas life is busy and designing works no matter how simple, help rebuild a part of her and bring her closer to her past. Emma is able to feel a connection to her ancestors but also build contemporary creations, utilising skills and techniques that have been passed on from Elders and community, especially Aunty Verna Nichols. Emmas works feature many natural materials, shells, fibres and kelp and these are things she is most comfortable with. She enjoys the process of gathering and collecting on country as part of the broader process. She often takes her children to share the knowledge that has been passed on to her. For Emma, this is the beginning of creation. This is also an important part of the work for her as she shares this with her sister and is often a time for them to reflect and support each other. You can view these beautiful pieces of work in person at the LongHouse Hobart [6 Evans Street] between 11am - 3pm Thursday to Sunday until 28 August.

16.01.2022 MEET THE ELDER The fourth and final Elder involved in the CHOSEN Exhibition that we have the privilege of introducing is Aunty Lola Greeno. Lola Greeno is Tasm...anian Aboriginal shell necklace maker/stringer and is known for her distinctly patterned often colourful and iridescent, delicate strands of shells that are collected from the coastlines of Tasmania mainland and the Furneaux Islands. As an extension to her cultural practice, Greeno has developed a series of new necklaces changing patterns with different shells, one was to design a Cape Barren Goose pattern in a contemporary context that talk about how the material represented the fauna, unique to the islands. The Black crow and white kelp shells represent Reconciliation Australia, the third necklace combines black crow, maireener and penguin shells to show the variety of shells first made by threading with sewing needles. Lola continues to develop her knowledge and skills sharing at workshops in Schools and demonstrating to the public conference groups both in Tasmania and for the larger Museums and Art Galleries in public programs. You can view these beautiful pieces of work in person at the LongHouse Hobart [6 Evans Street] between 11am - 3pm Thursday to Sunday until 28 August.
15.01.2022 If you have been tested for Covid-19 and are isolating until you receive your results please DO NOT attend Karadi programs or the Karadi office and let staff know as soon as possible so as they cancel your home visits. (In fact you should not be leaving your home at all until results are given) This is imperative as it puts staff and community at unnecessary risk.... Whilst Tasmania has been very lucky so far we must not get complacent.
