25.01.2022 From all of us here at Kara Lukins Podiatry Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you to all of our valued clients for your loyalty and support this year. We are truly blessed. 25.01.2022 So you’re running for the first time? You have never been a runner. Then suddenly, the Covid-19 virus hits. Your gym closes, your boot camp sessions stop, you can’t do laps at the pool anymore. So you turn to one of the purest forms of exercise - Running!... With so many people turning to running for exercise, injuries relating to running are on the rise. Quick guide to running injuries: Shin splints This exercise-induced pain is caused by overloading of the periosteum, the outer layer of the tibia bone where the muscle attached. Overuse and repetitive stress causes inflammation of the periosteum. This pain can usually be felt in the lower two-thirds of the posterior, medial (towards the midline of the body) border of the tibia. Heel pain This can result from increasing your mileage rapidly going from zero to hero! A thin broad band of tissue inserting into the heel called the plantar fascia. Increasing your mileage or frequency of running, running on hard bitumen, and soft old or inappropriate footwear use when running can all contribute to this. This pain is commonly termed plantar fasciitis if there is < 3 month history, in the acute phase. Others causes can be impingement of the Baxter’s nerve which innervates the heel region, which can result from an overpronating ‘rolling in’ foot posture. Ball-of-the-foot pain This can result from inappropriate soft flexible running footwear, forefoot striking when running, or simply too much mileage or intensity within a short time frame. This pain can be an indicator of synovitis of the joint capsule of a metatarsal, an increase of the size of the naturally occurring bursa (fluid-filled sacks which help the gliding of the forefoot bones) in the forefeet which then causes greater pressure of the nerves running through the metatarsal (also called neuroma), or a stress fracture. Blisters Resulting from shear pressure or rubbing, blisters are the creation of a pocket of serous (healthy) fluid underneath the epithelium layer of the skin. Usually resolving quickly through lancing, using an antiseptic, and mechanical protection from pressure. Luckily you can still see your friendly podiatrists at Kara Lukins Podiatry inside Croydon Family Practice. We are an essential service!

24.01.2022 Did you know?...Honey is popularly known as a sweetener, but many do not know that it also contains nutritional and medical qualities praised by none other than Hippocrates, the father of medicine. According to a Swiss study that discussed the nutritional value of honey, honey is rich in carbohydrates but has a low glycemic index (GI). Foods with low GI release glucose into the blood slowly and steadily; high GI foods cause blood sugar to spike. High GI foods are not suitable... for diabetics; but those after a workout or are experiencing hypoglycemia will benefit from its ability to give immediate energy. Honey contains the following trace minerals: potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, chloride, sulfur, iron, copper, iodine and zinc which although marginal, may contribute to the recommended daily intake requirements. It contains choline, a B-vitamin essential for brain and cardiovascular functions, cellular membrane composition and repair; and a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.

19.01.2022 AHPA has just received the following advice from Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt that in light of some states shutting down non-essential services, ALL alli...ed health businesses nationally can continue working and are encouraged to do so. The Minister has also indicated that the Department of Health is now developing full allied health telehealth options, along with other health and medical services, within the week. This will be part of a staged plan and he encourages providers to continue vital face-to-face services where possible. AHPA is currently liaising with the Department of Health regarding this development and will be meeting with the Department shortly to discuss details for allied health items. #APodA #podiatryau #covid19 #membersupport #australianpodiatry #australia #health #healthpractitioner #podiatry #virus #coronavirus #assistance #resources

18.01.2022 An American study called "If the shoe fits, wear it" found that nine out of ten women are wearing shoes that are too small and, after the age of 60, some 70% of women will have osteoarthiritis problems in their feet. As you get older, your feet tend to spread, but few women get them measured after the age of 20. Foot problems most commonly appear in the 40s, 50s, and 60s following decades of persevering with poorly fitting footwear. If social expectations of womens appearance and the sort of shoes that are "acceptable" changed, then there would be far fewer foot problems.

18.01.2022 "The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art" - Leonardo da Vinci. The trouble is that masterpiece of engineering can often require helpand that help comes in the form of a Podiatrist. If feet hurt or if they are getting an undue amount of hard skin, if there are colour changes, or if they are deforming or changing shape then a podiatry check up should be considered.

18.01.2022 While everybody is preparing to do their Christmas shopping, painful feet can make it even more unbearable! Check out my latest blog on pain in the ball of the feet.http://www.karalukinspodiatry.com.au/health-/metatarsalgia/

17.01.2022 Lest We Forget.

17.01.2022 Childrens feet differ from those of an adult, as they are not yet fully formed. At six months of age the foot is still mostly cartilage, in fact the last bone doesnt begin to form until children are about three years old. By 18 years most of the bones are fully formed. See more at: http://www.karalukinspodiatry.com.au/croydon-podiatry-se//

16.01.2022 You know what they say about people with big feet? Big forearms! Yes, thats correct. Your foot is the same length as your forearm. I dont think this applies if youre a Hobbit.....

12.01.2022 Following the Victorian premiers address this afternoon, it is our understanding that podiatrists in Melbourne can continue to work in some form. As there is cu...rrently very little detail released, we are meeting tomorrow morning with the Victorian Chief Allied Health Officer to clarify the details of these new measures and understand how they will impact podiatrists, if at all. We expect to be able to share these details with you sometime tomorrow morning. #APodA #podiatryau #covid19 #membersupport #australianpodiatry #australia #healthpractitioner #podiatry #coronavirus #assistance See more

12.01.2022 STAGE 4 RESTRICTIONS UPDATE Here at Kara Lukins Podiatry, we remain open during Stage 4 restrictions to provide essential footcare where critical care and safety are a priority. The government has mandated certain criteria for the patients we are able to provide footcare to during this time, to limit traffic in our community and keep us all safe. Our role at the moment is to limit deterioration in our patients condition, avoid hospitalisations and reduce further stress on the... health system. If you are unsure or have any questions about eligibility criteria please don't hesitate to give us a call on 9213 7000. We have full, well established COVID-19 infection control protocols in place throughout our centre and look forward to providing necessary, high quality footcare during these times.

11.01.2022 A note to all of our patients that we are still open and still seeing patients at this time. We have stringent infection control protocols in place and have rearranged our waiting room to allow for social distancing. The practitioners in the clinic who have been able to move to telephone and online appointments have done so, reducing the number of patients in the clinic at any one time.... I will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

11.01.2022 Not all feet are created equal! Some feet seem to take much abuse without complaining, many are not so lucky. Some people have sore feet in spite of wearing comfortable shoes and only moderate levels of activity. Ill-fitting or improper shoes may cause foot discomfort. However, the foot itself may be the problem. The human foot contains about 26 bones and numerous joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. It is a complex structure which isnt always ideally suited to weight-bearing and walking/running. We all have unique feet, and place unique demands upon them. The average person takes about 5000 steps a day, and walks 50,000 miles in a lifetime! Check out more at http://www.karalukinspodiatry.com.au/category/health-tips/

06.01.2022 We have been waiting for some further clarification after Premier Andrews announcement earlier this week regarding Stage 4 restrictions across Melbourne. For now, our understanding is that Podiatry is still considered an ESSENTIAL service and will continue where critical care, safety and well being is a priority. Obtaining necessary hea...lth care is not restricted to the 5km from home exclusion zone. I will update you all once more information comes to hand. Take care, Stay safe and Look after each other xx

01.01.2022 Yesterday the Victorian Premier announced that Melbourne based allied health professionals, including podiatrists, will be able to resume routine face-to-face care for all patients as of 11.59pm 18 October. The Victorian Health Minister also made special mention of allied health professionals who have exhibited great patience, care and support to play their role in limiting the spread of the virus. All patient care will still be required to be delivered with a COVID safe plan. Thank you to all our valued clients for being patient and understanding. We look forward to seeing you back in the clinic soon.
