25.01.2022 Renee Cashman - McAlpine is a well known identity around our karate dojo. She has trained with Di and myself for many years. Things became complicated when she met and married Rob a great guy but a Tang So Do instructor. Although I ordered her to go and train under her new hubby, she stayed and completed her Shodan black belt grading under myself. It was an honour to be invited to watch her grade to her Tang So Do brown belt on Saturday afternoon. Rob runs a unique outdoor... dojang on their rural property near Mareeba. This does not stop locals coming from far and wide to learn from Rob. He is a guy who teaches from the heart with passion for his art and students. There are many similarities with the foundations of our Shitoryu Karate. They are a great bunch of people and considered extended family to our dojo. Congratulations to Renee and Rob for the fantastic job you are doing. See more

23.01.2022 We are gaining new members every week even at this late stage of the year. Please if you haven't already, go to groups and request to join our members only group on facebook. This is where we discuss some of our in house information, thanks Sensei.

21.01.2022 There are new Queensland Health requirements to store attendance data electronically. As we already have a spreadsheet electronically stored to cover all students who are training. We are mainly concerned about non participants. To this end we have established a QR code and anyone wishing to enter either Cairns or Kuranda dojo.must use their mobile phone to enter their details for contact tracing. It is a simple process but if you have problems there will be someone who can help you. Thanks for your co operation.

21.01.2022 These photo were taken by Christian Paton, little Finley's Dad. What a talented photographer he is. Great shots to capture some precious memories. Thanks Christian.

18.01.2022 We have four new celebrities Khalida, Kairi, Evelyn and Amelia appear in todays Cairns Post. We received a call from the paper yesterday asking for our help at very short notice. Luckily we were already about to head down the range to Cairns when we got the call and were quickly able to arrange a few students. Thanks to those parents who were able to drop what they were doing and assist. Good to know we have built up a good reputation with the local media. We are only too happy to promote authentic karate in the region.

17.01.2022 What a great kids class we have right now. A few future champions for sure. Classes consist of warm ups with some fun, basics of course. Always some tuition on karate terminology and Shitoryu history. Kata with basic Bunkai explanation and free sparing (kumite). Our classes are fun yet detailed in the pursuit of discipline, character development and technical karate excellence. We just love watching these kids grow.

17.01.2022 There will be no Saturday class on 30th October as our hall will be used as a polling booth for the State elections.

17.01.2022 My students often hear me talk about perfecting basics. Some may think of this view in a simplistic way. This clip Con has sent is a good example of timing and distance. Neutralising an opponent mid attack (counter fighting) is an aspect few master. It requires perfect basics and is equally effective in competition or practical application.

16.01.2022 I want to take time to recognise and thank a few special people who have contributed enormously to the fabric of our dojo on and off the floor. Warren, Sarah, John and Tony. They all started with me when I kicked off this club. All of them late starters and all now wearing Shodan black belts. Each are a great help with the less experienced members and are all developing into solid instructors with a sound understanding of the core principals and basics necessary for our s...tudents to reach their full potential.. it is one thing to bombard a student with volumes of karate information. It is another to guide them into a sound fail safe instinctive knowledge of karate basics and principals that will allow them to continue to grow. A special mention also to Brooke and Renee who we don't see as much but have also been loyal contributors. Well done gang. See more

16.01.2022 Due to Covid we will not be having our usual Christmas break up and presentation night. Instead I have got a memento for every kid and should cover teenagers and a few big kids. They are to be handed out on the last training session of the year which is Tuesday 8 Dec for Kuranda and Wednesday 9 Dec for Cairns. If for any reason your child will not be training on those dates plz let ne know so I can present theirs early. Thanks to all parents and families for your on going support. Sensei.

15.01.2022 What a long way we have come from humble beginnings. Free karate classes and a bbq every Wednesday night for local kids in our old Edmonton back yard. Less than a decade later we have achieved State and National titles. Competed at the World Shitoryu Titles, won a community award and become alligned with some giants of World Karate. Thanks also to many friends and believers who have supported our vision. Pictured are Sensei Con Kassis with teacher Kenei Mabuni. Famous S...panish National Kumite and World title winning Coach Antonio Oliver. Former multiple Spanish kumite champion and World Kata Champion Luis Marrisane. Master Kenyu Mabuni 10th dan and inheritor of the Shitoryu style and two of the three Hasegawa brothers seven times World Team kata Champions. Not bad friends to have in our corner. Di and I are currently awaiting arrival of our initial certified dan grade certificates from Master Mabuni. Further gradings will occur under Sensei Mabuni himself as the world returns to some normality. Our vision is to create a pathway for the many lovers of karate in all its forms. What a ride we have had. See more

14.01.2022 A big thanks to our members and families who sent well wishes and support to the team over the weekend. Our final medal tally for nine team members was twelve Gold, five silver and five bronze. Those are new state titles until they are challenged and defended in March or April 2021. A big thanks to Queensland Karate for pulling this off in such an uncertain year. Its been a tiring weekend so see you all at training this week. Thanjs Sensei.

13.01.2022 Good to see numbers growing again on Saturday morning karate classes. Many old and new faces including Maya a seven year old cutie.

13.01.2022 Thanks to Coco, Mikoto and Katelyn for coming down and fundraising at Cazaly’s for our karate team to attend the State titles in November. Delicious dinner afterwards

13.01.2022 Hi members , I have been in contact with Sensei Con Kassis today. One of the things I have discussed with him is the possibility of including the Shitoryu Mabuni family emblem on our Gi's this year. Con went on to tell me how proud he is of our dojo and the efforts we have made. He has told me he speaks highly of us to other Shitoryu dojo's around the world... As a small country dojo we are doing our best. During the conversation I was offered the honour of joining the ...'Yoshukan'. This is the name of the original Mabuni dojo which we are already affiliated with, but it brings us into the inner circle and we will be representatives of the family dojo in this area. The word Yoshukan means, 'the cultivation of superior technique and spirit'. This is not something offered to every dojo affiliated into Shitoryu and is actually not a widespread thing, it means we carry the Mabuni family name and is an honour. I have accepted this offer on behalf of all of you who have worked so hard to build our reputation and put us where we are through your loyalty and hard work. Sensei Con will arrange this with Master Mabuni and at some stage this year we will include the family emblem on our Gi. There was also talk of a visit to the family dojo in Japan to meet and train with the family and hierarchy in the future. This will depend on international boarders opening again one day. Look forward to seeing you all soon. See more

12.01.2022 Our Dojo continues to attract new members. Despite the current difficult time we continue to forge ahead. I would like to ask new comers to our dojo to go to 'Groups' on this fb page and request to join our members only group where most of our internal matters are discussed. Thanks for your co operation. Sensei.

12.01.2022 What a great group of dedicated people we have. Thanks to all those who turned out to support our dojo raising funds at the Cairns Ironman to support our champions at State and National level karate. All this on the tail end of our Cazaly's fundraiser. A special thanks to Sarah our own Iron Lady who basically put this together with Jody's support.

11.01.2022 I have had quiet a few requests for a copy of Sensei Con's book on Shitoryu Karate. It is a brilliant guide to relevant Japanese terminology amoung other things. I have just ordered 20 copies from him.to be sent via Oz Post. It is pretty well a 'must have' for the serious Shitoryu student. I have had to add a few bucks for postage. They will be $35.00. Con will autograph them next time he visits. Let me know if you want one put aside. Once they are sold you will have to wait. Cheers Sensei.

11.01.2022 Threre are a few martial arts instructors about the place who would do well to take a cold shower and read this article. When I started karate some 37 years ago as a young police officer I was already dealing with violence on a daily basis. Did traditional karate make me more effective. Yes. There is no doubt. But not as the art was presented to me. Through a long intense study of karate basics my ability to survive most encounters and apply effective counter measures i...mproved dramatically. But it was the ability to deciper what I needed from karate and what I didn't that made the difference. Later as an instructior dealing with kids, many who had struggles, I learn't the most important lesson in my opinion martial arts has to offer. 'The difference I could make in peoples lives.' Addiction, depression and other social issues are far more dangerous than the imagined 'Boogie Man' some people think is hiding around every corner. One of my favourite phrases in the martial arts world is ' Ken Zen Ichi'. Spirit and technique must grow as one. Train hard and reap the rewards. Sensei. See more

10.01.2022 For anyone wanting copies of Sensei Con's book, they have arrived and I will have them at training tonight. They are $35.00.which includes postage. Also for advanced members, please don't forget Con's online seminar on Chatanyara Kushanku this coming Saturday. Lets support this man who has done so much for us. See you at class, Sensei.

10.01.2022 This will be our latest club polo. Members can order from Cerie. Not necessary to be on the States team but I reccomend anyone hoping to compete next year order one. Cheers Sensei

10.01.2022 Thanks to our members who supported the very indepth and informative online Chatanyara Kushanku seminar by Sensei Con Kassis. It was well attended by exponents from many countries as well as other styles. Our members have direct access to the most qualified and knowledgable teachers alive.

08.01.2022 Thanks to Sayaka Scott for these great images of yesterday's grading. We have a really strong kids class now and I am very much interested in developing their karate. Some very good potential there. Some will win State or National Titles, others achieve a black belt but each and every one will learn structure, focus and character that will contribute to their futures. Thanks to all the Mums and Dads for your support.

08.01.2022 Brilliant results Queensland Championships. Kahilida Jayde NEWNHAM, 2 bronze. Saya JINNO, 2 gold, 2 silver. Jesse Rose TALBOT-COOKE, 1 silver. Joshua LONG, 1 gold, 1 bronze.... Coco SAKAMOTO, 3 gold, 1 silver. Mikoto NOMURA, 2 gold, 1 bronze. Katelyn ROW, 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze. Junko SAKAMOTO, 1 gold. Dianne LONG, 1 gold. Congratulations to our champions. To their families and supporters and to all our club members THANK YOU.

07.01.2022 A picture is worth a thousand words. Queensland State Titles 12 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze. Look out Australian National Titles 2021.

07.01.2022 Perfect poise and concerntration. Well done and congratulations on 2nd kyu Rio.

03.01.2022 Shared this from one of my black belts Renee. Its pretty much true. Those who are left standing not only earn their black belt but are also renewed people in the knowledge that they have the strength of character and determination to achieve anything. This is why authenticity is so important to martial arts instructors. There are no short cuts in life and there should be none in martial arts. Look forward to seeing you all soon. Sensei.

02.01.2022 We were warmly welcomed by Sensei's Bryan Dukas and Rick Hislop of Sunshine Coast Martial Arts, (Shotokan), Noosa. They are a quality dojo and will be great friends going forward. They are QKA members and we are sure to have some good competition from them in years ahead. If you are on the Sunshine Coast be sure to drop in and make yourself known.

01.01.2022 Thanks to our great supporters at Cazaly's Bruce, Tracey and Elijah as well as Kairi and Jody. Well done and appreciated.

01.01.2022 What a dangerous crew. Saya, Jessie, KJ and Zen manning the raffle table at Cazaly's. Big thank you to the Jinno family.
