10.01.2022 "Don't be afraid of failure. See it as a learning experience that provides an opportunity for continued growth." ~ Hideharu Onamu From the book "Illuminated Spirit - Conversations with a Kyudo Master" by Dan & Jackie DeProspero.
08.01.2022 BEIND THE SCENES - What it's really like getting setup for online classes, from a student's perspective. Here's a video created by one of our students, Torsten. Be sure to watch the video all the way through until the end.... Torsten has been training with us for nearly 4 and a half years. Up until the start of this year he was training with us in the dojo. At the start of the year he moved out of the area to go to university in Brisbane. For a short time, Torsten stopped training because it was too far to travel back for regular classes. This is a story that we've seen so many times over the last 20 years. Students train for a few years, move out of the area and many just stop training altogether. But not this time, well, not for long anyway. Shortly after starting uni, we all went into lockdown as a result of covid. We made the decision to take classes online with live Zoom classes, in order to take care of our members. Torsten's Dad was still training with us, so he gave Torsten a nudge to join us for online classes and he's been back in the dojo (with online classes) ever since. Torsten only has a small space where he's living, so he's got a bit of work before classes to get setup. Here's what he does to get his space setup for online classes.

04.01.2022 "There are opportunities to train in all kinds of situations such as how I walk down the road when I'm out for a walk and even how to open a door." ~ Tsuyoshi Chitose, 2nd Generation Chito-Ryu Soke
01.01.2022 RIKI: Technique (Power). In karate, power generation comes through the correct application of technique, rather than physical strength. Ultimately we do not really seek power, but correct technique which allows us to generate natural power. We cannot get away from the laws of physics, but with the proper understanding of biomechanics it is possible to do things that almost seem impossible to an untrained person.... POWER = MASS x ACCELERATION In the dojo we spend years honing our technique in order to improve acceleration and an increase the mass of our technique by creating proper body alignment and structure. It's not our physicality or our athletic abilities that matter most, it's the subtle tweaks we make to our technique that often have the most profound effect. Of course to study one's own body alone will not produce the best possible result, we also must study movements of our opponent. With practice a well trained karate-ka is able to assess distance, timing, balance, angles and looking for weak points to exploit in their opponent in a fraction of a second. Listen now to the Karate 4 Life podcast, the final instalment in a mini series about "Ichi Gan, Ni Soku, San Tan, Shi Riki", the basic principles that underpin everything we practice in the dojo. https://karate4life.com/podca/basic-4-riki-technique-power/ If you've missed the earlier episodes in this mini series, you can catch them all here (in order).
