25.01.2022 Congratulations to Kancho Reece on achieving his Black Belt (Yudan) grade in Yamane-ryu Kobudo [traditional weapons]! Learning never ends. While continuing to practise Matsubayashi-ryu Kobudo, Kancho Reece also took up Yamane-ryu Kobudo in the more recent years, under the guidance of Sensei Patrick McCarthy (Hanshi), and instruction of Sensei Bill Johansen (Shihan), and has now officially become a member of the IRKRS Yudanshakai.

25.01.2022 Morning fitness on the Holiday Program!

24.01.2022 Two great stories of people enjoying what they're doing are being told here. The first story is that of two green belts training together with a desire for shared outcomes, and the second story is that of the senpai showing the way.

23.01.2022 Tomorrow, Kancho Reece will be presenting at a virtual seminar, hosted by Karate Connection at 8:00am (AEDT). The seminar will be a 40-minute session on 'Form and Function: Translating Kata'. The seminar is open to students of all styles. We will begin the session with a presentation that looks at the purpose of kata, and some research and ideas around the practical application of kata and the translation of form to function (or function to form). This will then be followed w...ith a session of practical demonstration of the principles, and an opportunity for attendees to train at home, and/or ask questions. The second seminar will be on kobudo (saijutsu) by another guest instructor. Register at https://us02web.zoom.us//tZYtc-yupj8uHNZr6GrVDDL1RUWj6BZFn

21.01.2022 Great to see some of our students online for this seminar! Many familiar concepts delivered by great instructors.

19.01.2022 Great to have all our brown and black belts back in the dojo for our first senior grade class of the year. Tonight's class focused on striking and padwork, and finished with a little kata!

18.01.2022 We held our first instructor training session today. One of our Member Promises is to ensure Quality Instruction. One of the ways we do this is through our Instructor Development Program that educates our instructors on pedagogy, andragogy, risk management/OHS, first aid, and our ethos of delivering classes (enjoyable, safe, and focused on learning). An amazing team to work with, and we were pleased to welcome a few more new faces to the team this year!

17.01.2022 We're looking forward to grading 60 Junior Karate students over the next two days. We're ready... are you?!

17.01.2022 Who would have thought this would happen this year... we have just hit a new milestone: 250 active training students. This wouldn't have been possible without our community's support, so a very grateful thank you. This growth has certainly seen challenges, and with our priority being Quality Experiences and Quality Instruction, growing our instructor team alongside this has been important, and we now have a team of 15 actively assisting in classes. ... Our Leadership Team will soon be heading off for their annual strategic planning event, and we look forward to announcing how we'll continue to deliver on our quality outcomes, and positive changes for 2021 and onwards.

16.01.2022 Kancho Reece might not be at our dojo at the moment, but that doesn't mean he's not at a dojo!

16.01.2022 A very interesting piece of research and information that is worthwhile study for all students.

16.01.2022 Big grading today! Our most blue belts (8th mon) ever testing at one grading!

14.01.2022 Motivational Monday: It is up to us to create opportunities that will lead to success, and to recognise them when they are presented. We cannot only rely on chance, and often opportunity may only knock once, so take it! This is similar to a famous quote by Miyamoto Musashi which read 'Respect the gods and Buddhas, but do not depend on them' and which is included in Shoshin Nagamine-osensei's 'Precepts for mastering karatedo'.

13.01.2022 A great way to bring in the new year! Our first CKD Fitness class with Coach Cat (a qualified PT) for 2021. CKD Fitness is a functional community-based fitness class that is free to all CKD students and their direct household.

12.01.2022 Have you seen this little guy at reception? He is a shingata-kokeshi [] from Japan, and was a wonderful gift from one of our students!

12.01.2022 Congratulations to our Junior Karate Beginners who successfully obtained their next (or first!) grade at today's Grading. Omedato!

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Dylan-san on achieving his Gonenkai (5 Years Training) in 2020. Well done!

11.01.2022 A great photo from last night's Juniors Karate capturing the essence of what we're all about: building each other up. Great job Arianto-senpai and Xavier! The dojo senpai are leading some great classes this week.

11.01.2022 Motivational Monday: Ahead of gradings this week, here's a quote worth thinking on.

10.01.2022 Thank you to all who have given the ultimate sacrifice, to all who have served, and to all who continue to do so. Lest we forget.

10.01.2022 The dojo was open this morning for some open mat kobudo, great to see so many students turning up to train and being self motivated!

09.01.2022 Congratulations to Jess-senpai who was presented with her Karate Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt) Certificate from the Matsubayashiryu Honbu Dojo in Okinawa today [graded October 2020]. Omedato!

08.01.2022 Today was the last day of our Holiday Program, and the dojo was invaded by oni! A great day of fitness, karate and board breaking. We also watched some short videos on the history of Okinawa and karate.

08.01.2022 We will remember them. Let we forget.

08.01.2022 Ahead of tomorrow, we'd like to wish our community a very Merry Christmas.

07.01.2022 A few of our students attended a Kumite Night today at Power Karate Canberra for 25+ rounds of contact sparring. Great job!

07.01.2022 What a great day! Start the morning with a 2h virtual seminar with 50+ participants from around the world hosted by Karate Connection. Then 3h of in-person grading preparation classes, then finish off the day with virtual kobudo tuition from Shihan Bill from the Brisbane Koryukan. Ps. Credit to Craig-sensei for the photos.

07.01.2022 Our programs kick-off on 11 January for 2021 in what we call "pre-term" training, with the official term starting 1 February. We've made the decision to change how we do enrolments in our programs; essentially, we're limiting enrolments to certain periods and lower numbers to ensure we maintain our promises of Quality Instruction and Quality Experiences. We're pleased to say we've currently a healthy wait list, and from this, we've now filled our pre-term Juniors Karate enrolments for week 1. We may take a few more students once term commences, pending on class sizes.

07.01.2022 It is important to recognise those who make us who we are both as karateka and as people. Two of those people are pictured below. Kancho Reece has been at the NSW Dojo this past week training with other members of the Matsubayashi-ryu Karate Association of Australia (MKAA) this is a great photo from one of the black belt sub-classes where Sensei Carlyle is teaching Rohai. Kancho Reece commenced his training on the mid-north coast with Sensei John Carlyle and continues to maintain that important and invaluable connection with his teacher. The other person you'll see (front left) has also been an important part on that journey: Mrs Rebecca Cavanagh, now also a karate sensei too, was one of Kancho Reece's shodan (1st dan) classmates, and they continue to maintain a strong friendship.

06.01.2022 Ok! It's time to bring in the new year... but are you team Cobra Kai or Miyagi-do?!

06.01.2022 We recently participated in a virtual worldwide celebration and memorial seminar for Shoshin Nagamine-osensei, the founder of Matsubayashi-ryu.

05.01.2022 Christmas has come early... and this is only half! Thanks Shureido.

05.01.2022 Today our trainee Junoir Leaders had another of their development sessions. Today was learning about delivering feedback and learner types. They had the challenge of teaching via voice (but closed eyes), and then visual (but no speaking) to see the importance of both types of learning.

05.01.2022 Three years ago today!

05.01.2022 A great video from Matsubayashi-ryu Kaicho, Sensei Yoshitaka Taira, on the use of gedan-uke in our karate style. A must see for all students. http://okic.okinawa/en/archives/news/p4677

03.01.2022 An exciting initiative from the AFTK, to which we are a member.
