25.01.2022 The QKA will host the deferred Queensland State Karate Titles Tournament on Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31. This will replace the Queensland Open which was scheduled for these dates. If restrictions are still in place for non-essential public gatherings, the QKA will stage the tournament in a manner that complies with these restrictions and reduces risk. Our approach will be to schedule age groups into time blocks for both kata and kumite. As an example, children 8,9,10... and 11 may be time blocked into Saturday morning 9:00 till 1:00, say. Competitors in these age groups and their close family members as spectators, will be invited to the tournament during these hours for their events, after which they will be required to leave the venue. The venue will then be cleaned ready for the next age and time blocked competitor grouping and their spectators. The actual age groupings and time blocks will be determined closer to the event. The QKA will also implement various clean protocols during events including mitt and mat cleaning. The QKA will hold your entries and entry fees already paid in trust for the new tournament date. Alternatively, if you would prefer a refund, please send an email to [email protected] stating the name of the person who made the payment, the date the payment was made and the payment amount. Also, you will need to provide the name(s) of the athlete(s) to which the payment related so that we can delete their event entries. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time. We look forward to staging a somewhat unusual, but no doubt still a great 2020 Queensland State Titles.

23.01.2022 Entries Open! Queensland Cup 2020 Entries are now open for the Queensland Cup to be held on Sunday February 23 at Cleveland State High School Paul Bancroft Centre. Start time is contingent on entries and will be advised. Entries close 5:00 pm Friday, February 14.... Given this is a one day tournament and we want to finish the event in daylight hours, both kyu grade and black belt grades will compete together in their age and weight categories. Having said this, depending on entries numbers, we may seperate Children Kyu and Black Belt entries for kumite and kata. The age and weight categories for male and female kata and kumite are detailed on the website. On Line Entry Form The QKA will accept individual or family entries through an on-line form with payment via Paypal, see link below: https://www.schoolskarate.com.au/tournament-registration/ A bulk entry form is available for Dojo's/Sensei's who wish to manage/enter in bulk entries for their students, see link below: https://www.schoolskarate.com.au/tournament-bulk-registrat/ Entry Fees An individual event entry fee is required per person, per event according to the scale below: 1st Athlete $60 2nd Athlete or Event $40 3rd Athlete or Event $30 4th and subsequent Athlete or Event $25 Events are defined by age and/or weight division. A single fee only is charged for both kata and kumite per event. By way of clarification, a competitor entering Junior kata and kumite will pay the 1st athlete entry fee ($60). If that competitor also enters the Senior kata event a second event fee ($40) will also be paid. If an individual athlete only enters their Kumite event (say), they will still be required to pay the entire 1st Athlete fee of $60. For Families, the 1st athlete in the family will pay $60 for their kata and kumite events, the second athlete in the family will pay $40 for their kata and kumite events. If the 2nd Athlete also enters another event (say Senior kata) then an additional $30 will be charged. The 3rd athlete in the family will then pay $25 for their kata and kumite events. This same pricing scale applies to individuals entering multiple events as well as family entries. Entering in this Tournament is subject to the QKA standard tournament conditions, disclaimers and waivers which can be found on the QKA website Events tab. https://www.schoolskarate.com.au/

22.01.2022 A Competition Rules Update Seminar will be held at the Cleveland State High School T4 Lecture Theatre (same venue as that used for the Coaching Update Day) commencing 1:00pm, February 15. There are three QKA tournaments this year, and two seminars. This first seminar will prepare athletes, coaches, referees and judges for the Queensland Cup (February 23) and the State Titles (March 21,22). There are several new rules/procedures relating mainly to kumite that will be explai...ned and demonstrated. Our WKF referees and judges, whilst at international tournaments, have noted that athletes and coaches that understand these new procedures are in a good position to benefit tactically during their bouts. Kata scoring procedures will also be reviewed. We urge all athletes, coaches, referees and judges to attend the February 15 Seminar. Referee and coach theory exams will be held after the seminar. This is an ideal opportunity for referees and judges seeking to upgrade at the State titles or the Australian Open to test out their theory knowledge. The T4 Lecture Theatre is situated in the Language Centre near the main Administration Block on the corner of Russel and Smith Street. Please refer to the map attached to the link. http://karatequeensland.com.au/competition-rules-update-se/

This year will be an exciting update day as it will follow a slightly different structure more hands on and more engaging. With such a positive response t...o last year’s guest presenters, they have agreed to a follow up presentation that will extend and develop the material they presented in 2019. Victoria Waterworth is a Nidan in both Shotokan and Shitoryu and has competed and medalled internationally as a Canadian National Karate athlete. 12.01.2022 National Titles deferred to 2021 The AKF has just announced: "The Australian Karate Federation together with all State Federations has decided to postpone this year’s National Championships to a date to be confirmed in 2021. The 48th National Championships will be in Perth, Western Australia. This difficult decision is supported unanimously by the AKF Executive Committee together with the State Presidents from all our State Federations." Subject to State and Federal Governmen...t advice, the AKF intends holding the postponed 2020 Australian Open Championships in the third quarter of 2020, with dates to be confirmed as soon as possible. As such, it is with great regret and disappointment, that the QKA will not be conducting any State team activities this year. Also, and as a consequence, the QKA Executive will not be naming a State Coaching Panel at this stage. The Executive would like to thank all applicants for coaching positions. The applications were once again of a high calibre and will ensure the future Queensland team has excellent guidance in their endeavours. As previously advised, we continue to be hopeful that we will be able to hold our postponed State Titles later in the year - perhaps in the October/November time frame.

10.01.2022 Dear Heads of Style, Athletes and Karate Community Members State Titles March 21/22 Deferred Until Further Notice For some time the QKA has been closely monitoring the spread of the Corona Virus in Queensland and Australia, drawing directly on advice from Queensland Health and the Australian Government as well as from our own resources.... Earlier today we were advised that the Australian Government has adopted the recommendations of Australia’s Chief Medical Officers regarding staging public meetings and events. The Government is advising AGAINST non-essential gatherings of 500 or more people from next Monday 16 March. School and work are considered essential activities and therefore do not fall under this directive. Given the close contact nature of our sport and given that this event involves more than 500 people, the QKA believes that it is prudent to defer our tournament until the Corona Virus situation improves. The State Titles Tournament is therefore deferred until further notice. The QKA understands that this decision may inconvenience many people, particularly those who have plans to travel from north and central Queensland and northern NSW. However, the primary consideration at this time is protecting the health and well-being of our karate community, and the community at large. Additional information will be forthcoming following a QKA Executive Meeting that will be held tomorrow, Saturday 14 March. Yours in karate, Alan Key QKA President.

10.01.2022 The most recent directive from the Australian Government is that pubs, clubs, churches, cinemas, indoor sports venues and casinos will be closed from midday Monday 23 March. There is no definitive advice available regarding what constitutes an indoor sports venue. The QKA is aware that many Dojos throughout Australia have already suspended their activities for the time being. We are also aware that some organisations have up until this point in time continued to operate with... appropriate participant distancing and modified training activities that focus on technique and, in particular, kata. Many of our members are privately owned businesses, others are community based organisations. At this time, the QKA advises each member organisation to interpret and apply the current directive according to your own particular operational circumstances keeping in mind that the intent of the directive is about protecting our collective well-being. Yours in Karate Alan Key QKA President

09.01.2022 Attention all Karate Coaches - Bronze, Silver, and Gold Please remember all Coaches (Bronze, Silver & Gold) need to complete this form before the 31st of December 2019 and submit it as it is a requirement of the Australian Sports Commission to maintain official recognition of sporting accreditation and cannot be exempted. See QKA web page (http://karatequeensland.com.au/coaching/). As a coach part of your requirement is you must each year undertake 6 hours of further education. Please note, The QKA Coaching Update Day is approved for this purpose. Attendance satisfies a coach’s annual further education requirement.

05.01.2022 Interpreting the Stage 3 physical contact on the field of play easing of restrictions scheduled for July 3 This morning (July 1), the QKA sought clarification advice from the Queensland Government regarding the July 3 lifting of "physical contact on the field of play" restrictions with respect to how it relates to our sport and dojo training activities. We have been advised that we need to wait for detailed information that will be published by the Chief Health Officer wit...hin the next two or three days. The information will be available at the following web address in the Latest Updates section under the heading - Restrictions on Businesses, Activities and Undertakings Direction (No. 3): https://www.health.qld.gov.au//cho-public-health-direction The QKA will continue to monitor this site and seek further clarification as required.
