15.01.2022 OLDER Australians are spending less time living in aged care homes despite their longer lifespans. Financial factors and a growing use of home care options have pushed the average age of entry into residential aged care to 83, and experts believe it will continue to rise. Older Australians typically stayed in aged care homes for two or three years but industry participants say this length of time is getting shorter each year.Residential aged care is becoming an end-of-life care service, driven by the strong preference of older people to stay in their homes

14.01.2022 : : Disability workers, unions and advocacy groups are raising the alarm over the likelihood that less experienced, less qualified staff, and even dodgy operators could pour into the sector under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. As concerns mount over the implementation of the Labor-initiated scheme under a Coalition government, many of those in the disability field say they are being told the only way services can be provided on budget is by cutting staff costs, including training and supervision. At present, the agency delivering the NDIS, the National Disability Insurance Agency, has a Quality and Safeguarding Framework, which was developed after consultation with people with disability, carers, providers and peak bodies, although this framework is not yet fully implemented.

12.01.2022 The Commonwealth says it will look at new oversight measures for retirement villages while seniors call for new national regulations. Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt said the Federal Government would expedite work across relevant portfolios and the states and territories, which have overall responsibility for retirement villages, regarding retirement villages regulation. It comes after a joint report by Fairfax and the ABC’s Four Corners program on Monday night which aired long-held concerns about the contracts used in retirement villages. The program, which focused on major retirement village operator Aveo, featured current and former residents who said they were negatively impacted by complex contracts and confusing marketing.

11.01.2022 Liberal MP confronts Turnbull over aged care decisions: Senior Liberal backbencher Russell Broadbent has quit two parliamentary positions in protest at the government’s treatment of aged care in his electorate. He is angry that an aged care provider from outside his electorate, Menarock Aged Care Services, was awarded approval for a new 60-bed facility. He claims that a better process may have given the local community a more beneficial outcome.

08.01.2022 As of 27 February 2017, a number of changes have been introduced that will give you greater choice, control and flexibility in the way you receive home care services, and how those services are delivered. If you are currently receiving home care package services, it will be easier to change providers if you move to live in another area or are looking for a better fit. The changes also mean that if you choose to move to another provider, any unused money in your account - less any account fee - will go with you to your new home care provider.

07.01.2022 Thousands of new home-care packages to be added as demand soars The government is planning to expand the amount of home-care packages for the elderly, as demand continues to far outstrip supply. Geoff Jessop has just returned home after three weeks in hospital and is one of those people in need. You don't realise what and who you need until something like this happens," Mr Jessop said.... Council on the Ageing CEO Ian Yates said 10,000-14,000 people died every year waiting for a home-care package. And with the final report from the Royal Commission on Ageing due early next year, the government is playing an expensive game of catch-up. "Going back to March last year, the waiting list was 130,000," Aged Care Minister Richard Colbeck said. "It's now down to 100,000.

05.01.2022 The federal agency that oversees aged-care centres has repeatedly failed to detect shocking cases of inadequate care and neglect, sparking calls for an overhaul of the tick-a-box accreditation system that is meant to ensure the safety of 170,000 nursing home residents. Analysis by The Weekend Australian has uncovered examples of at least 10 aged-care homes that formally met all of the regulator’s 44 accreditation standards in recent years despite subsequent findings that they failed to provide a reasonable standard of care. These include cases in which an 89-year-old war veteran was attacked by mice as he lay in his Queensland nursing home bed and another involving an elderly dementia sufferer who died after falling into a fountain in a Melbourne home’s courtyard.

04.01.2022 A $25.7 million National Aged Care Advocacy Program (NACAP) is to be delivered by the federally funded not for profit Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) in a new national funding agreement. Federal Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt said OPAN would receive $25.7 million over the next three years to supply wide-ranging advocacy services. OPAN will deliver the advocacy program through a consortium of nine service delivery organisations across all states and territories who collaborated to secure the new federal funding. Moving to a single provider model will allow the NACAP to build on its experience and expand its skills base

02.01.2022 Australia's nursing homes are increasingly deadly places for their residents, with a 400 per cent increase in preventable deaths over the past decade despite billions of dollars of federal and private money being spent on them. Falls, choking and suicide were the main causes of preventable deaths, according to a new study by Monash University researcher Joe Ibrahim, in a trend he says shows we are "not looking hard enough" for ways to reduce the risks for elderly Australians.
