23.01.2022 I’ve been nominated by Felicite Grogan Art to share my artwork for the next 6 days. While I’m not a sculptor, I decided to look back at the Bee Hotel I made several years ago. I used mostly recycled and found materials, wine boxes, string, mud, logs, twigs, rocks, reeds and seed pods. It’s now been hanging in the garden for close to 3 years and even though it’s showing some signs of ageing, you can see some of the ‘rooms’ are currently occupied! Hmmmm....are the guests bees or some other creatures? Only time will tell....

16.01.2022 Don’t buy the cheap art from Vietnam or China that you’ll see in everyone else’s house. Buy an artwork that you connect with, that moves you, that inspires you.... Local artists need your support. Whether it's a piece of artwork they have for sale, or a commissioned piece created especially for you, supporting your local artist will help keep thier business alive. The benefit to you? You perhaps wouldn’t have known about us otherwise and therefore had the pleasure of years of enjoyment from your chosen art. This applies to Artists of all varieties and even more so now. Please prioritise art as Christmas gifts this year. And please help share this to remind everyone that we can support local and support artists
13.01.2022 Day 3 of the challenge by Felicite Grogan Art to share 6 days of my artwork! Following on from yesterday’s look back at drawing from my childhood, the first photo in this post shows my current development with graphite pencils. The rest show how I got here with a little help from a couple of people: Brenton at @tinkeringwithlight was a tutor of mine a few years ago and he encouraged experimentation with different grades of graphite pencils and pressure to produce light and da...rk tones. We also used various objects to gouge the paper beforehand to preserve some white paper and reveal an image. I used this technique to successfully create the veins on my leaf drawing (last image). I then attended a few workshops with Kate at Kate Jenvey Fine Artist who showed me how to approach drawing animals. You can see where my previous experiments assisted with the contours on the horse’s shoulder but it was Kate’s knowledge of the underlying anatomy that helped me to really look and ‘see’ the subject. When drawing the lion and tiger I learnt that animals don’t have ‘hard’ edges (apart from teeth, nails etc.) and rather than draw individual hairs, draw the shadows they create. If you like to draw but are feeling a little dissatisfied with the result, I highly recommend seeking out a more experienced person to help you to the next level. Then it’s practice, practice, practice! See more

05.01.2022 Day 4 of the challenge by Felicite Grogan Art to share 6 days of my artwork. Today it’s coloured pencils! The birds nest is from the past 12 months and scrolling through the photos you will see a duck and some leaves from quite a few years back. While I was happy with them at the time, I still felt something was lacking - they seemed a little bland. During the course I did with Brenton @tinkeringwithlight , he again encouraged us to experiment with our art materials. Just lik...e I did with graphite pencils, I drew up a chart and used different pressure to see how coloured pencils laid down on paper. In my sketchbook I practiced gouging paper with one colour and then laid another over the top. It is this very technique that I used in all my coloured pencil drawings. The pear drawing is my very first time at layering colours and from that point I was hooked. I again attended some workshops with Kate @katejenveyart and she helped me further with techniques. I now have about 300 coloured pencils to choose from and when I start a new project I create little colour charts so I don’t get overwhelmed trying to find the right colour. I keep these ‘swatches’ so I can use the colour scheme another time. Another habit I have is to put all my pencils back in their boxes in the correct order! Some people have laughed at this but I find it’s a great way to ‘reset’ between works. Remember- practice, practice, practice! See more

03.01.2022 Here’s day 2 of the challenge by Felicite Grogan Art to share 6 days of my artwork. So, going a loooonnng way back in time I thought I’d show a little bit of my development using GRAPHITE pencils. As a child I really enjoyed copying things and the first 3 drawings of a chicken, a lady in profile and the man with the cheque were drawn by me when I was 10 years old. The next 2 of the dogs and plants were sketched from real life when I was 16. Like a lot of people, the pencils ...went away after my teenage years and for the most part, stayed away for a few decades! In recent years, I decided to get a little more serious and sought out some drawing workshops and courses. The final image of the duck was drawn 2 years ago. Now, do you think I picked up a pencil after such a long period of time and instantly improved? No! What you are looking at is hundreds and hundreds of hours of practice. Tomorrow I’ll share some of the exercises in my sketchbooks that helped me get to where I am now. See more
