25.01.2022 Challenge For Artists #karenbarnesartist #peelopenstudios #challengeforartists... Day 10 Lisa Wray nominated me to show 1 image of my Art or Studio for 10 consecutive days. No explanation needed! I then nominate another Artist every day to do the same. 10 days, 10 images, 10 nominations. Zero explanations! The goal is to promote positivity, passion & attention to Art. I am nominating Lulu Ball, who is another Artist participating in the Peel Open Studios!

21.01.2022 I must admit, I have not been painting much lately. Instead, my creativity was directed towards producing this 80 page hardcover cookbook. Absolutely thrilled to bits with it! I think I should sack the ‘Food Stylist’ (me!). She was more interested in eating the food, rather than styling & photographing!

17.01.2022 ‘Sunset Glow’ acrylic 38 x 114 cms. I hope the New Years Eve Fireworks tonight will be just as bright & spectacular! Woohoo! Happy New Year!

12.01.2022 I love these! People’s creativity never ceases to amaze me! If I get a chance I will have to take the 30 - 40 minute drive to Waroona & see these Hay Bale Masterpieces in real life!

05.01.2022 My Mandurah Fridge Magnets are now on display & available for sale at the Visit Mandurah Tourist Information Centre in Mandurah Terrace, Mandurah WA. Only $3 each. Most have matching gift cards, also available for sale! What a great little stocking filler!

02.01.2022 We would like to clear up any confusion regarding the studio opening hours outlined in the Event Guide. This year, we have used a colour coded system to clearly outline the opening hours for each studio space: Dates in green represent the artists weekend opening hours (in most cases 10am - 4pm with a few exceptions)... Dates in yellow represent the days of the week that the artist is open by appointment - many artists are happy to welcome you from Mon - Fri if you prearrange a meeting A red cross over a date means the studio will be closed at that time If you have any questions regarding opening hours, please feel free to contact our Facebook page and we can provide further information! 30.12.2021 New Years Eve here in Australia! Happy New Year Celebrations to all! Another couple of my sunset paintings. One in acrylic, the other watercolour. Never lose sight of the fact after the sun sets you can then look forward to the sun rising the following day! As 2021 comes to an end we must all look forward to 2022 with excitement & anticipation. Be the best person you can be & always try & do the right thing! x

12.12.2021 Soon the sun will go down for the last time in 2021, so I thought I would show you a few of my favourite sunset paintings! This is my husband’s favourite! (He doesn’t want to sell it! ) His cousins had been visiting from the UK & as we strolled along the Rockingham Foreshore, nature provided us with the best Skyshow ever! Titled ‘Last Light’, it is acrylic on canvas. It is available for sale!! Please DM me if you are interested & need more information.

09.12.2021 To all my wonderful clients, friends, neighbours. I do hope your Christmas was very special & Santa bought you everything you needed & wanted. This photo is my dog Mylo, enjoying his first Christmas. He soon got the hang of opening his present!! 2022 is just around the corner & I wish you & your Families (including your pets!) all the very best! Good health is vital, plus love, joy & happiness! Next year I look forward to a fresh start & renewed creativity. I have lots of plans in the pipeline but more about that.next year!

28.11.2021 ‘Childhood Memories’ - watercolour & gouache. This commission was never going to be easy! My Client’s brief was to portray what he remembered of his family farm. He wanted me to include the driveway, dead trees, gate, (including property name) & letterbox, with grass trees nearby. Plus the homestead, with flame tree & three other trees in the paddock! He also mentioned cows but I drew the line at that suggestion! It was a tall order considering the limited reference material he provided. The trouble with having too many points of interest is the difficulty of creating a composition that works! I’m happy to say, he seemed absolutely delighted with the end result! I’m looking forward to seeing it framed! Phew!!

26.11.2021 I am trying to produce a painting for a lovely client who remembers his childhood home with great affection! Unfortunately, my reference material is very limited! The original homestead no longer exists! I have listened carefully to his stories from his childhood, then I endeavour to create that memory with paint & paintbrush! Starting with several pencil sketches, my client & I workshop several ideas. I then produce watercolour ‘roughs’. I can’t wait to show you the end result (with my client’s permission of course!).

12.11.2021 My son & I always have lunch together on Thursdays, so this week we decided to drive to Rockingham & have a look at the Castaways Sculpture Award Exhibition. I started by viewing the Marquette & Small Sculpture Exhibition. Then it was off to the foreshore & beach to see the larger sculptures! The main point of this award is to promote recycling & environmental awareness. However, I think it is all too easy for Artists to get bogged down with the ‘gloom & doom’ mentality. We have had enough of that over the past couple of years! Thankfully there were some quirky, humorous pieces! Have a great weekend everyone!

09.11.2021 It is difficult to believe that two years ago we were enjoying the holiday of a lifetime! Two months in USA & Canada. We visited many places, met numerous people & saw so much! A highlight for me was visiting Washington & The National Gallery of Art. (See my faves in photos!) We stayed in Times Square, New York. We got involved with street theatre, where we were shoulder to shoulder with locals & other tourists from all over the world! We walked to Broadway & saw a pla...y ‘Come From Away’! Squeezed into packed Restaurants. Eventually we cruised out of New York harbour on a chilly evening where we waved goodbye the the majestic Statue of Liberty! Little did we know that a virus would ‘come from away’ & change the world as we know it! I did catch a virus! It made me very ill & has affected my heart & lungs, permanently! Which virus?! Who knows! Coincidence? Maybe! See more

05.11.2021 I briefly visited the Keith Holmes Reserve, Mandurah yesterday & saw the many participants of the Plein Air Down Under Festival hard at work! It was great catching up with a few of my ‘Arty Friends’ - my apologies to those I didn’t get to see (& there were many!). I wish you all every success for the remainder of the Festival! It is a perfect day to be painting in the quaint town of Pinjarra today! Enjoy!

20.10.2021 I’m sorry I haven’t posted anything in a while! My husband, son & Mylo dog, headed north in the caravan, hoping for some sunshine & a nice holiday! It seems lots of other West Australians had the same idea! It was very busy, so we were forced to cut our holiday short! We’re home again but we did enjoy the change of scenery & there was no shortage of artistic inspiration! Have a great weekend everyone!

30.09.2021 Ooooh! It’s ’Freaky Friday’! At least it has been a bit freaky for me! I was given a commission & my client only had limited reference material (a few small, faded photos). I played around with a few ideas, put pencil to paper on several A4 size sheets of paper. I was a little frustrated because there was no detail of the homestead in the photos provided. I thought I could hide it behind the Flame trees my client wanted included in the painting! Not ideal! (Artists Angst!). However!! My client visited today & his wife had come across a couple of extra photos, they had forgotten they had! I couldn’t believe it! Yay! Now I can see the beautiful old farmhouse! They have chosen their favourite composition (can you guess which one?) & now it is full steam ahead - let the painting commence!! Have a great weekend everyone!

22.09.2021 Wow! And double WOW! Yesterday I went on a bit of a road trip with my husband, son & Mylo dog. We were keen to see this amazing mural titled ‘Reflections’! Painted on the Wellington Dam by Artist Guido Van Helton & completed in February this year, it is well worth seeing! I am in awe at how any Artist could paint such a huge mural in such a difficult environment!

20.09.2021 Happy Friday everyone! Once upon a time.a long, long time ago. I was adamant that I would never do commissions! However.times & circumstances change! Commissions can be a challenge because the vision the client has in his/her ‘minds eye’ is always different to what I imagine. Even with photos, it is never easy! Faded 4 x 6 photos rarely offer enough information! It is up to me as the Artist to create an interesting composition that hopefully captures the essence of what my client has in mind! My current commission is a returning client (good sign!). He presented me with a few photos of his childhood home. The dead tree has to be included, the gate & the farmhouse. He also wants the painting to be the same size & frame as the previous painting he purchased from me!
