25.01.2022 Here’s a video that reveals a little bit of what goes on behind the finished surface of a painting... there’s a whole lot of adding and subtracting paint, some playing and decision making. The clip doesn’t show the standing back to review after each colour is applied to check in on tonal variations, design, and textural differences across the surface of the board, nor me working out my next move. It’s all part of the painting puzzle...trying to reach a point where I call it... finished. And now my plan is to scale up. I’m keen to understand if any of these little paintings might translate into larger paintings... See the end of the video for my mock ups..... 22.01.2022 A few photos to show you how this little painting is evolving . . . As many of you know I love working in layers, which means I have to be patient because oils dry very slowly..... Have a flick through these images and you’ll see how this study evolves from some random organic shapes into something that speaks of a hillside of trees. ... Building up layers of thin paint over certain areas can bring both contrast and harmony to an image. There’s plenty of reviewing and then decisions to be made on what parts to hide or reveal. Each painting is like a big puzzle for me to solve, balancing values, colour, shapes and texture..it’s just so addictive! This one still has a way to go.... but for now it’s time to leave it for a day or so to dry before deciding what to do next. 22.01.2022 Beautiful morning spent at ARTPOD, teaching at my Escape into Nature painting class with some lovely creative ladies. I mentored the students in setting up their workspace and palette and then covered tips on composition, marking out and blocking in, plus an intro to colour mixing. 20.01.2022 From two blank canvases to the first layer of colour in a few hours... condensed into just over a minute. This is the first session of many layers.... working loose and fast with larger brushe, using oil paint thinned with a mix of medium and gamsol to get the canvas covered.

19.01.2022 Good morning.! It’s the first of February and it’s my first walk out in a face mask. Here in Perth we are in an unexpected lockdown as of yesterday evening..... It feels very strange, but I’m glad to see that everyone else is doing the right thing and wearing their’s too. ... However, its lovely to be out enjoying my usual daily walk with my doggies before hitting the studio. I’m feeling very fortunate to have all this beautiful green and blue space on my doorstep to use for my precious hour of outdoor exercise that we are still allowed. I hope you are safe and feeling ok and can escape outside for a bit today too. I’d love to know which place you’ll be heading to for your 60 minutes.... and I hope it lifts you up. 18.01.2022 Ive decided to start up a weekly feature, sharing the story behind a current painting in my gallery. Today is all about this large Meelup Beach painting. This one is pretty damn special to me. Its from an afternoon last March when my big sis was over on holiday (first time to Australia) so we escaped for a few days down south, so I could show her my favourite bits. After a brewery lunch I thought it would be fab to have a quick dip at Meelup. However, the weather gods tho...ught differently! Instead we sat on the beach and watch the most spectacular storm. Lightning, crazy clouds, rainbows.... so not your typical March afternoon at Meelup. The best thing was we stayed completely dry, watching that storm go slowly past... very special to share the spectacle with my sis I felt that I needed to make that afternoon last forever, so after shed gone back to England I just had to paint a giant size version. I loved the drama Id created with the clouds so decided to enter it into the Royal Art Prize, and it was selected as a finalist in the 2019 Salon at the Perth Royal Show. 11.01.2022 I have a confession.... For the last few months I have been obsessed with two things. Firstly, PAINT... I have been playing about and experimenting with mark making, viscosity, colours, abstract and semi abstract designs and generally rediscovering the playfulness of painting. ... Second obsession: the CAPE TO CAPE TRACK in the Margaret River region of WA. As some of you know I completed a 6 day hike, from end to end, in October and absolutely loved the whole experience. That feeling of space and connection to nature, respect for the rough terrain, the unpredictable elements and wildlife (ie snakes!!) and feeling so very grateful that I could have the freedom to experience the most spectacular coastal vistas in the world with my amazing friends. It was one of those special weeks that I will always treasure. So, I have been spending all my time indulging my dual obsession in the studio. Using the paint and all its wonderful properties to hopefully capture more than a photo ever could and last much longer than my 50 year old memory ever will. As a little insight into this new body of work here’s a small detail of an area around Gracetown, where the track turns to rusty coloured boulders that go on and on and on.... a challenging stretch of the walk, but stunning against the blue of the ocean. If you want to see more you will have to wait until they are exhibited all together later in the year. 10.01.2022 Its all in the detail! Today I was working on a big canvas, which looks amazing when you see it from afar. BUT.... whenever I create a large landscape I like to include lots of special little details, which you only notice when you get up really close and personal. Secret marks, splashes, unexpected colours, shiny bits, thick paint.... whatever I feel that particulate painting might need to make it dance.... 07.01.2022 1, 2 and now 3!!! There is so much going on right now in my studio. I’ve started 3 large ones since Monday, and the fourth has just had its ground laid down. I’m also working on 4 small abstract landscapes in the evenings too. ... It must be something in the water, the cooler weather even, or maybe it’s the fact that I’ve fixed some dates for exhibitions for the coming months and I’m excited!!! 07.01.2022 NEW painting now up on my website gallery shop. Looking for Whales is painted in oils on a wooden board, and cradled in a solid wood frame. When youve walked from Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, down to the viewing platform above the whales resting area this is what you see. Even when there are no whales its a stunning piece of coastline, full of beautiful coastal plants and an ocean that seems to go on forever ... I painted a mid blue base colour as the ground, so I could create the vegetation by scratching the thicker paint on top to let some of the blue peek through.
