18.01.2022 There is always a reason and science of equine ethology and learning theory behind the behaviours of our horses. Riders will say my horse is hot, naughty, moody , stupid, just wanting to get out of work, pushy, lazy and the list goes on! Horses are none of these things and if your horse is displaying some of these behaviours there is something wrong with what we are doing. It is our fault not the horses and it is our responsibility to find out what it is ....

18.01.2022 I am in the process of making educational videos and an online course on retraining off the track thoroughbreds. I would love to get some feedback on what every...one would like help with! What type of videos would you like? what do you want to know? What don’t you understand? Where do you need help? Also would you like a private Facebook group where everyone can get together and support each other, ask questions etc. Feel free to put as much down in the comments below, the more I know the more I can help you and your horses. ( even if you don’t have an off the track thoroughbred, it is still applicable to off the track Standardbreds).... #karingraceyequestrian #offthetrackthoroughbred See more

10.01.2022 Just 2 Off The Track Thoroughbreds having a play amongst the relaxed herd it is very peaceful just being out amongst my horses and watching them!

10.01.2022 I wanted to talk about retraining your Off the Track Thoroughbred and where to start...In my previous live videos I have talked about addressing issues of pain and nutrition in rehabilitating your thoroughbred, now I want to dive deeper into the actual retraining phase. An off the track thoroughbred needs to be retrained with basic foundation training. Basic foundation training is teaching the aids of stop with the reins, go with the legs, yield their shoulders and yield thei...r hindquarters all on a light response. These basic aids to control our horses are essential for a successful relationship with your horse and a safe environment for you and your horse. Having clear light aids is not a priority or a focus in thoroughbred racehorses and therefore must be retrained for a calm and safe horse in a life after racing. The principles I follow and retrain my thoroughbreds with ( I use these principles with all horses ) are the Equitation Science Principles. (I am currently studying the Equitation Science Diploma and I have also spent a year training down at the Equine Behaviour Centre with Andrew McLean in 2003. ) I will go deeper into what Equitation Science is in the coming days and the first steps to start to retrain your horse. To start with I have attached the video below where Andrew McLean talks about the training scale used within Equitation Science and the steps to move through with training. Please post in the comments if you need any clarity with what Andrew McLean is talking about in the video See more

09.01.2022 Sometimes life just works out! ....

08.01.2022 WHIPS ARE OVERUSED IN MANY EQUESTRIAN DISCIPLINES. Having been involved in the racing industry for 16 years and riding trackwork every day over this time, I personally do not like the use of whips in racing.I have always been a hands and heels trackwork rider with only ever using a tap on the shoulder with the whip as a reinforcement aid only. Whips in horse training should only be used as an extension of our arm and as a light reinforcement of the primary aid asked. Horses have more sensitive skin than humans, even though their skin overall is thicker the nerve endings are closer to the surface of their skin. And thoroughbreds as a sensitive breed will often be more reactive to tactile stimulation.

04.01.2022 I am sitting here at Canberra Hospital waiting to check in for my surgery today. My beautiful friend Sharon Hewett drove me in this morning, Thankyou!. With some time to fill before I check in I wanted to talk about struggles I see and hear people are having with their horses when doing in hand work like straightness training. In hand classical posture work is fantastic to do with your horse, it helps your horse to use their body in a more healthy way, it creates suppleness ...and connection. BUT it is not going to be effective with an off the track thoroughbred or any other very green horse if you haven’t trained the basic responses first. The basic responses are training the stop, go, yield the shoulders and yield the hindquarters. You train each individual body part movement of the horse first to a light response and then and only then once you have achieved light responses and have control of the horses legs you move onto the more advanced work of posture training. You need to be able to control your horses legs and retraining the basic responses gives you this foundation... I am going to film examples of how to train the basic responses using the many Ott the track thoroughbreds I have so you can see how OTTBS horses respond. In the meantime until I get my own training videos up I will find some other videos that will help explain training the basic responses... See more
