25.01.2022 Join our special edition of KaritaneLIVE tomorrow at 10am to celebrate Child Protection week as we discuss what role you can play in supporting children and their families.
25.01.2022 How can you tell when your baby is hungry? In the early weeks your baby will try to communicate their needs. As you get to know each other better, you’ll begin to understand these cues. Babies are ‘wired’ to look for food when hungry, and feeding times can vary greatly. It is recommended to feed babies on demand and responsive to their feeding cues so if your baby starts to fuss and hasn’t been fed in the last few hours, checking their appetite is a good start. It’s normal ...to feed a newborn baby 6-12 times per day. Click here for more tips -> https://karitane.com.au/feeding

23.01.2022 Toilet training is one of your child’s biggest milestones. When starting the toilet training process, there are a few important things to remember. Research suggests every child develops toileting skills in their own time and way, from approximately two to three years of age. Find out more -> https://karitane.com.au/toilet-training
23.01.2022 Today we acknowledge World Autism Awareness Day. This important day is dedicated to promoting solutions for the needs of people with autism across the spectrum and throughout their life span, as well as their families. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects approximately 1 in 160 children and as many as 27% of children with ASD show significant behavioural challenges including signs of aggression, severe tantrums and head-banging.... At Karitane, each year we help hundreds of families with pre-school aged children to navigate these behaviours through our leading Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). This specialised program is proven to improve child behaviour, parent-child relationships and increase positive parenting skills. We also help families struggling with other difficult toddler behaviours, using a purpose-refined adaptation of our leading therapy, ‘PCIT-Toddler’. Here are some practical tips to consider at home if your child is displaying 'externalising' (aggressive) behaviours: Aim to increase one on one time with your child Provide consistent and predictable limit setting strategies Shift your focus to praising your child's positive behaviours that are the opposite of the destructive behaviours they may display at times. For example, if your child is hitting you or themselves, then be sure to praise their use of gentle hands as much as possible. 23.01.2022 Playtime is a great opportunity for learning! When playing with other children, it can build on their confidence to socialise, including sharing, negotiating and communicating effectively. Some children get this form of play through day care and school, but if your child is not attending day care you could consider arranging a playdate!

20.01.2022 TIP OF THE WEEK: Benefits of Play Screen time includes television, Ipad, phone use or computer use. Here are some recommendations on screen time, and also some positive factors it can provide: https://www.schn.health.nsw.gov.au//screen_time_and_childr

Breathing Exercises - Deep breathing in and out in a controlled manner can help reduce stress and give you a feeling of calm. It is also a good way of managing your emotions when you feel overwhelmed. 3. 13.01.2022 We are so excited to announce Commando Steve as ambassador for Karitane. His honesty and passion about his role as a parent, a dad, the importance of connection and wellbeing is so aligned to Karitanes purpose - building parent capacity, enhancing parent-child relationships, advocating for and supporting families and young children, and strengthening a family's connection with supports inside their community. When I first became a parent at 22, I was still young and very mu...ch about myself. Now I have four children and the dad I am today is worlds apart from what I was like back then. Being a dad to me is about showing love and affection, Im always giving my kids hugs and kisses and telling them how much I love them. I feel thats something I lacked from an early age and it definitely had an impact on the more intimate aspects of my own life. That nurture and love is so important, but so is staying calm, being present in the moment and listening, really listening Read Steves full story here; http://bit.ly/KAnnSW

02.01.2022 What can I do to help support my baby’s mental health development? You are most likely doing most of these things already! The most important thing to consider is providing a safe and loving place for your baby through responsive parenting by recognising your baby’s cues. Plenty of eye-contact and cuddles is also very important.... For older children, it is important to help teach them emotional regulation as they have not developed the skills to do this independently. It involves role modelling calm behaviours when they are experiencing chaos. Recognising that they need support and love when they are having ‘tantrums’ is the first step in helping your child regulate their emotions.
