24.01.2022 When trying to improve our health, many of us make sweeping changes to our lifestyles. This can be very hard to maintain, and often results in giving up altogether. Instead, consider make small changes on a regular basis. Each small change can be sustained for a week or two until it starts to feel routine before another small change can be added. This way each small step over time adds up to the large-scale results you initially envisioned. It may take a little longer to get there, but you're more likely to be successful and to sustain the changes you have implemented! #karlalanemassage #onestepatatime

24.01.2022 New habits take a couple of months of consistent performance to become routine. One easy way to remember new habits is to link them to existing habits. Want to remember to sit up straight at your desk? Check your posture every time you check your email or answer your phone. Have you been given a stretch to help with an injury? Do it immediately after brushing your teeth in the morning and evening. Choose a time and habit that works for you and your new habits will quickly become part of your daily routine. #karlalanemassage #createnewhabits

24.01.2022 Do you have flat feet? High arches? Feet come in all shapes and sizes. There is no right or wrong, no good or bad shape. The difference is in how mobile and adaptable your feet are to their environment. #karlalanemassage #flatfeet #higharches

20.01.2022 The pelvis sits centrally in the body, adapting to multiple forces acting on it in all directions to allow for balanced posture and easy movement. If the pelvis is unable to adapt in any dimension, pain and problems are likely to result both above and below. #karlalanemassage #pelviscorrection

20.01.2022 We offer pregnancy massage! Assuming your pregnancy is progressing well with no major complications, it is safe to receive massage treatments throughout the course of your pregnancy. At the clinic we have special pillows that make it safe to lie prone, or side lying can be used if you are more comfortable this way. The massage table lifts to a semi-sitting position so as your baby bump grows it won't strain your low back lying supine, and extra pillowing is used to prevent co...mpression of the major blood vessels. Apart from positioning requirements, there are a few extra precautions that are observed in a pregnancy massage. Sustained stimulation is avoided on the inside of the ankles and thighs. Lighter pressure is used over the low back. Broad use of heat is avoided, and extra care should be taken when getting up off the table as you are more prone to becoming light-headed following a massage while pregnant. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, seek the advice of your doctor or trained health professional prior to booking your massage. #pregnancymassage #karlalanemassage

14.01.2022 Roughly one third of babies are delivered by Caesarean section instead of a natural vaginal birth, including both elective and emergency C-sections. There are various complications to be considered following a Caesarean delivery. From the point of view of a manual therapist, one of the most overlooked complications is the surgical scar itself. The surgeons must cut through many layers of tissue including the skin, subcutaneous superficial fascia, several abdominal muscular la...yers, pelvic fascia, and of course the wall of the uterus itself. Then, the more difficult task is to match up all those layers again and sew them together as seamlessly as possible. Many women have ongoing restrictions, pain, weakness, or pockets of edema due to the scarring process that they don't realize can be addressed using scar tissue integration techniques. These techniques are gentle, and can be used at any stage, from a few week post surgery to many years later on old established scars. #karlalanemassage #Csection #scartissue See more

07.01.2022 The body is amazing! Every woman's body adapts differently, but certain postural changes are common. Initially the pelvis will often tilt forwards, increasing the curve in the low back and possibly leading to strain in the hips, SI joints and lumbar spine. As the baby bump continues to grow the pelvis tends to shift forwards over the feet, the pelvis will reverse its tilt, and the ribcage shifts backwards to balance the baby over the centre of gravity. Finally, the thoracic c...urve will often increase and the head will shift forwards to compensate for the posterior shift in the ribcage. These changes can result in tension in the calves and the front of the hips, continued compression in the lumbar spine which often results in sciatic pattern pain down the legs, and tension in the upper back, neck and jaw. These areas of discomfort can be treated symptomatically during pregnancy to make the mother more comfortable. After delivery, some women's bodies are still stuck in their late pregnancy posture. It's important to have a postural assessment and address any lingering restrictions and poor postural habits which are no longer adaptive. #bodychanges #karlalanemassage

04.01.2022 De Quervain's Tenosynovitis or "Mommy wrist" is a pathology of of two of the long muscles that control the thumb. Its cause is unknown, but it is strongly associated with repetitive use of the wrist and thumb. One of the largest populations that suffers from this painful syndrome is pregnant and postpartum women. This is likely due to, or aggravated by, continual use of the thumbs as leverage when picking up the baby. While surgical intervention is a possibility, many women respond well to conservative management, using manual techniques, stretching and strengthening exercises to address the pathological tendons and altered biomechanics in the wrist. #karlalanemassage #mommywrist #dequervains

03.01.2022 Keeping healthy and moving during pregnancy is very important - the healthier you are when you deliver your baby, the better you can recover postpartum. Listen to your body; Generally speaking it is safe to continue any exercise (except contact sports) that you have been engaged in regularly prior to pregnancy, slowly decreasing intensity and impact as your pregnancy progresses. If in any doubt ask your doctor or other trained health professional for guidance. Advice can also be critical for a safe return to exercise after delivery. #pregnancyexercise #karlalanemassage
