24.01.2022 Important Covid-19 Update Russell Island Queensland Health has reported one new case of COVID-19 today on Russell Island. The woman is in her sixties and bel...ieved to be linked to another case. Metro South Health is currently planning to set-up a pop-up COVID-19 testing clinic on Russell Island and this will be in operation later this afternoon and will continue for the coming days. Contact tracing has commenced with the woman this morning and we will continue to assess the situation and provide the local community with the relevant advice. We want to reassure the people of Russell Island and other islands in the area that we've been planning for situations like this and we are well prepared to ensure that their health needs are taken care of. Metro South Health is in the process of arranging for the woman to be transferred to the mainland. Please be vigilant - socially distance and if you can’t wear a mask, wash your hands and maintain good hand hygiene. If you’re sick stay at home and get tested!

20.01.2022 Karragarra Island Organics Recycling Project The Karragarra Community Garden is excited to be the centre of a research project that is supported by the Goodman Foundation and will be realised in conjunction with the University of Queensland, the Redland City Council, Running Wild Youth Conservation Culture Inc. and SMBI Permaculture. The project title is; Small is Beautiful moving towards a zero organic waste community on Karragarra Island through a community-based organics... recycling scheme. The project will, in collaboration with the community groups and RCC, deliver a case study, demonstration site, and model for a community-based organics recycling scheme, while also assessing the potential for realising a zero organic waste community. The project will run over the next 12 months and will include participating residents collecting their food waste; the collected waste will be composted using a novel small-scale, solar powered, forced aeration composting system at the community garden, and the generated compost products will be used to grow fruit and veggies at our gardens.and beyond. Regular updates about the project will be posted. Watch this space!

17.01.2022 A Survey Is Heading Your Way In the next few days, all Karragarra residents will find a survey from the University of Queensland in their letterbox. This survey is part of our Community Composting Project which commenced a little while ago, and which, over the next nine months aims to develop and trial a food waste capture, composting and utilisation scheme for Karragarra. The survey aims to understand what residents currently do with their garden and food waste, and also get a feel for the likely participation in a future food waste capture and composting scheme. Therefore, it is important that you complete the questionnaire and return it in the provided pre-paid envelope. And don't forget to also return the completed prize draw form for your chance to win a fruit tree!

07.01.2022 It was great to be back to a more "normal" gardening day today. And were we busy! Building a chook pen, composting, mulching, planting, weeding, feeding etc.

05.01.2022 This looks like a great workshop!

05.01.2022 Some great advice from Jerry, especially in the current climate.

04.01.2022 Great information about edible arrowroot!

03.01.2022 Do you use liquid seaweed? Seaweed is a tonic, not a fertilizer, but it does do some fantastic things to plant growth. I have trialed soaking both seeds (especi...ally beetroot, spinach and tomato) in seaweed for 12 hours prior to sowing and also garlic. Germination and root formation is much faster after soaking. Seaweed also improves plant disease resistance; makes nutrients in the soil more available to roots and improves soil structure. Just remember, seaweed does not contain nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, iron and other nutrients essential to plant growth. Use it liberally, but not as a substitute for fertilizer or other nutrient sources like compost. And yes, this seaweed is diluted at 20ml per litre. Friday's post will be a recipe for Tree Paste.

03.01.2022 Congratulations to the Running Wild class of October 19 to March 20 on their graduation at Karragarra Community Garden.
