21.01.2022 Given it is #mensshedweek2020 this week, I visited the Karrinyup Community Men's Shed today to celebrate the completion of their Stronger Communities Programme ...collaboration with the City of Stirling. Under the last round of the SCP, the City of Stirling successfully applied for funding on behalf of the Shed to improve the site by installing a demountable building which is now their meeting and tea room, leaving more space for projects in their main shed. The men took the chance to show me - with a considerable measure of well-earned pride - a few of their latest projects, which are having a profound and positive impact on their mental health and wellbeing.
17.01.2022 Karrinyup Men's Shed Bulletin 26 August 2020 From: Karrinyup Men's Shed To: All Karrinyup Community Men's Shed members Shed Re-Organisation, New Crib Room... ========================== We mark a milestone event. The new Crib Room is in place and will be handed over for our occupancy from Monday. Our transition plan requires the shed to be closed to production work from Monday 31st August until resumption of normal operations on Thursday 3rd September. All rostered members are asked to attend during these days to help out under the direction of John Berry and Graeme Harris, as follows: Monday 31st August & Tuesday 1st September * Immediately following Monday morning tea all tables and chairs will be removed to the lawn area for cleaning before being placed into the crib room. * Commence rearrangement of workshop benches and machinery according to the most feasible option, as per plans attached and comments below. * Clean up (ie vacuuming workshop and storage areas, model room, office, kitchen) * Sorting out the back store - select tools to retain and tool to dispose of. * Sort out the alcove where the personal storage boxes are located. * Finalise current upgrade to dust extraction. * Allocate jobs for storage projects - we need to make better use of our storage space - item 4 will help. Wednesday 2 September * Finalise unfinished work from list above. * Surplus tools not needed in the shed will be available for sale to members from 10:00am. * Tools not sold on this day will be disposed of. Proposed Floor Plans Two Options * The only variation between the two is the arrangement around the sliding door entry. * Placing machinery along the south wall enables easy extension of the dust extraction system. * Although there is no increase the number of benches the new arrangement provides a much safer workspace around machines and access to both sides of some benches. * The existing kitchen area will be set up for metal work activities. * We will implement a "clean bench rule" meaning, all work is to be cleared from benches at the end of your session. Any work left on benches may be removed from the shed. 15.01.2022 KCMS stall at Stirling Farmer's Market ======================== The KCMS stall at Stirling Farmer's Market on Sunday 4 October was organised by Frank D'Silva and Norm Patison, with assistance from a band of helpers.... The sale of member's products benefitted the Shed a brilliant effort plus they took a number of orders. Ice Cream Cart ========= Kingsley McGuire, Deane Palmer and Jeff Crookes brought a little sunshine into the lives of residents at Brightwater's Onslow House care home, Subiaco, on 8 October 2020 when they helped Brightwater's Adriana Philippou unveil a new ice-cream cart. Residents were delighted when treated to ice-creams for morning tea. The cart, constructed by Kingsley at KCMS, will bring happiness to residents this coming summer when care home manager John does his rounds of the rooms ringing his bell and serves residents with their icy treats. Our guys were well rewarded for their efforts when the assembled residents responded with smiles and a round of impromptu applause. 13.01.2022 Karrinyup Men's Shed Bulletin 11 August 2020 From: Karrinyup Men's Shed To: Karrinyup Community Men's Shed members New Crib Room - Installation Project... ========================= Work to install the new crib room is planned to commence on site from Friday 14th August and if all goes to plan, will conclude before the end of August. Contractors are indicating moving the sea container this Friday 14th August and progressing with earthworks on Monday 17th August. Members please note that the car park, driveway and adjacent footpath is to be kept clear of vehicles on Friday 14th August to give access to the crane lifting the sea-container. Shed activities on Tuesday 18th August are likely to be curtailed while electrical and hydraulic connections are made as this will cause interruptions to services. Again on Tuesday 25th August the car park, driveway and footpath is to be kept clear while the new demountable is being delivered and lifted into place. It will also be necessary for cars to be well clear of the street approaches to allow turning by the low loader. The area immediately in front of the double cyclone gates is to be kept clear throughout the project and there will be no parking available to members within the grounds. Please respect our neighbours if parking in the street. Avoid congestion and keep clear of verges, driveways, etc. Members are asked to maintain a safe distance from the construction site while work is in progress. This information will be updated as the project progresses. ================ Earlier KCMS newsletters ================ If you have missed any, earlier newsletters/bulletins are on the KCMS website at http://karrinyup.mensshedswa.org.au/newsletters.htm Recent newsletters are in both PDF format for printing on A4 paper and HTML format which can easily be read on screen. ================ This email from Karrinyup Community Men's Shed 6 Jedda Rd, Balcatta, WA 6021 Email [email protected] Website http://karrinyup.mensshedswa.org.au/ PO Box 281, North Beach, WA 6920 Facebook https://www.facebook.com/karrinyupmensshed/ ABN: 88 397 817 632

05.01.2022 Karrinyup Men's Shed Bulletin 30 October 2020 To All KCMS Members Access and Inclusion in the Shed A Men's Health Initiative =======================================... Members may recall that this project was commenced in February 2020, when, with the support of a Connect Groups Grant, we retained the services of Occupational Therapist, Melissa Hitchcock of Yellow Door Therapy Services. At that time, members were invited to contribute to discussion sessions which were than interrupted by our shed closure due to the pandemic. Melissa's work was concluded via a number of Zoom hook-ups with members on line. A copy of Melissa's final report which summarises the work of the project and the findings of the consultation period, with recommendations going forward, is at http://karrinyup.mensshedswa.org.au//mens-shed-ot-report-m Many will find the report a positive and useful resource exploring the nature of our shed and declaring a commitment to our future men's health objectives. A key objective of the project was to identify ways in which we could offer a more supportive and inclusive shed experience for members with support needs, both now and in the future. Individual support needs can take on many forms, some obvious, but many are not so obvious. The shed experience may encourage men to connect with others and discuss their feelings and needs, but some will not. Inclusion is one of the important core principles of our men's shed in that we welcome, without discrimination, men of all ages from all walks of life, cultures and backgrounds. Our men's support objective is to provide positive experiences to promote strong mental health, overall well-being and social connection in a communal, non-threatening environment. Work activities undertaken within the shed are a conduit to building our capacity to engage members constructively to improve their lives. We currently have available some limited grant funds to engage Melissa for short-term, one to one, private meetings with members who feel they would benefit from some assistance in getting the most from their shed experience. If you feel that your experience could be improved to better suit your needs, having a talk with Melissa will look at how your ideas might contribute to improving our Shed for you. The time spent with Melissa is totally in confidence and can be arranged on your own turf. If you would like to make a time to catch up with Melissa, please contact Richard Curry or Jeff Crookes and we will then refer your request to Melissa to make a time. Regards to all. 01.01.2022 Bunnings Balcatta sausage sizzle. A small, but hard working team of volunteers ran a very successful KCMS sausage sizzle at Bunnings Balcatta on Sunday 18th October. This revenue will go towards improving our shed facilities - for the benefit of all members.... Huge thanks go to our willing volunteers for a tremendous effort including, setting up, cooking and serving over 1100 hot dogs and then cleaning up afterwards; all in very warm conditions. Some members putting in more than 10 hours of their time. The team was: Nick Di Loreto; Norm Patison; Gareth Chiplin; Terry Sheard; Peter Polain; Jeff Crookes; Phil Hogan; Mark Saggers; Frank D’Silva; Phil Ward; Peter Buegge; Deane Palmer and Dylan Harvey (Deane's Grandson). Thanks also to those who turned up at the shed on Saturday to cut bread rolls. Some photos are on the KCMS website at http://karrinyup.mensshedswa.org.au/photos.htm#bunnings
