23.01.2022 The Federal Department of Health said about one in every 250,000 people vaccinated with AstraZeneca in Europe had been diagnosed with the rare blood clotting. So far, there had been just two reported cases likely linked to AstraZeneca in Australia. The department said there was a potentially greater risk for people below the age of 50 to develop thrombosis with thrombocytopenia after being administered the vaccine.... It had led to a preference towards the Pfizer vaccine for that age group in Australia, while people above 50 would continue to be given the AstraZeneca vaccine. "It is important to note the AstraZeneca vaccine remains highly effective at preventing death and severe illness among people who have contracted COVID-19," said health department heads in a joint statement last week. "And that the incidence of the blood-clotting syndrome is very rare."

12.01.2022 "The number of new HIV cases in NSW plummeted last year by more than 30 per cent due to COVID-19 restrictions that triggered a quasi-moratorium on casual sex. A total of 206 people were diagnosed with HIV last year 33 per cent lower than the average number of new cases over the previous five years, NSW’s latest HIV Strategy report shows. Released on Monday, the report found only 31 per cent of these newly diagnosed people probably contracted the virus recently within the preceding 12 months a decrease of 47 per cent on the five-year average."

08.01.2022 "It’s estimated that about 1.2 million people in the United States are living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Treatment has improved to the point where people with HIV now experience a near typicalTrusted Source life expectancy. Despite improvements in treatment, it’s common for people with even low viral loads to experience pain in places like their back, head, or abdomen.... A 2017 studyTrusted Source found that in a group of 422 adults with HIV, 13.3 percent experienced back pain. It’s thought that HIV and antiretroviral drugs may both contribute to chronic pain in people with HIV."

02.01.2022 Any historical re-telling of this period risks becoming overly clinical, failing to highlight the very human cost that AIDS wrecked. For those involved, it was a kind of hell on earthseveral compared it to being in a war zone. By the early ‘90s, more than 1,000 Australians were dying of AIDS a yearup 20 a week. Yet flash forward four decades to 2019, and almost 30,000 Australians were living with HIV. And while those living with HIV once took a cocktail of drugs to stay alive as many as 30 different medications a day most can now take just one.
