20.01.2022 Australia named ‘Destination of the Year’ by Condé Nast Traveler. A stunning Australian coastal scene has been splashed across the front cover of one of America’s leading travel publications, Condé Nast Traveler, which has named Australia ‘Destination of the Year’. The January 2016 ‘Gold List’ issue features more than 20 pages on Australia covering various regions including Sydney, Melbourne, Byron Bay and Tasmania and pays tribute to Australia's food and wine, fashion and st...yle influencers. The magazine, which has a circulation of over 800,000 and total readership of over 2.3 million, hits newsstands in the USA this week and will be promoted digitally in December and January. Editor in chief Pilar Guzman will also promote the issue in the USA and is planning to celebrate with an event in Sydney. Tourism Australia Managing Director, John O’Sullivan, said that to be named as their ‘Destination of Year’ for 2016 by Condé Nast Traveler was a huge accolade for Australia. "This is an influential and hugely respected travel publication, with a readership in the United States of America which closely matches the profile of our own target audience. The timing couldn’t be better for us either, just weeks away from the launch of our next big global campaign. This will put a renewed focus on Australia’s world-class aquatic and coastal experiences, many of which I’m delighted to see have been highlighted by Condé Nast Traveler as critical elements of our country’s international appeal, he said. Mr O’Sullivan said that the news came at a time when Australia was enjoying record visitor arrivals from the United States of America, growing at levels not seen since the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The USA is Australia’s fourth largest inbound tourism market, with a record 590,000 American visitor arrivals in the last 12 months (Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics, YE October 2015).

07.01.2022 HIGH COURT RULES AGAINST AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT’S DECISION TO EXEMPT WORKERS ON VESSELS IN OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY FROM VISA REQUIREMENTS The Court found that the Minister exceeded the limits of power conferred on the Minister by s 9A (6) [of the Migration Act 1958] and for that reason is invalid. Unions who brought the case before the Court argued the move provided an incentive for companies to hire foreigners for cheaper wages and undercut safety standards and conditio...ns. In a statement after the ruling, Minister Dutton said that he was disappointed by the courts ruling. Minister Dutton went on to say in the statement Workers on fixed offshore installations are required to hold an Australian visa, but the crews on some vessels which perform highly specialised work, usually of a short term nature, were exempted from this requirement. Many of these vessels operate in international waters and never enter an Australian port. What does this mean for those working on relevant vessels and floating structures in the migration zone? They will require a Subclass 400 or 457 visa. These visa subclasses are prescribed for offshore resources activities for workers who will be in an area to participate in or to support an offshore resource. These workers are authorised to enter Australia in a way other than through a port or pre-cleared flight. From Migration Institute of Australia eNews 7 September 2016

04.01.2022 Social Impact and the French 90/10 Superannuation Program Australian civil society leaders are advocating for the adoption of an innovative superannuation program that could provide billions of dollars in social projects to the Australian community. The 90/10 Super Program gives French people with superannuation funds the option to invest up to 10% in organisations that can create social impact as well as deliver a sound financial return. ... In 2008 the French 90/10 program generated expenditure of $700 million in projects for social good. By 2013, $5.5 billion was invested and the fund continues to grow at a rate of 800% in five years. Community Council for Australia (CCA) CEO, David Crosbie, who believes the model could readily be applied in Australia, believes that if similar levels of funds could be generated in Australia, tens of thousands of affordable housing places could be created in one year. Crosbie says the Program is a 'template for a revolution that Australia desperately needs’. Read more at: http://www.probonoaustralia.com.au/news/2015/12/putting-‘super’-work-charity
