23.01.2022 This post is for anyone who is frightened of trying something new...and failing. My magnificent artwork pictured above - pffft is a perfect example of how failure can lead to success by making us grow. I was recently inspired by a new technique I stumbled across while watching the fabulously talented @liobabrueckner . The technique involves applying a clear sealant over an existing watercolour painting for the purpose of priming it to finish off the painting with oil pain...t. Essentially allowing an artist to mix two mediums that are never used together. Sounds great right??... The sealant I used was just one I already had in my studio (and for the record not the one recommended by Lioba) and as you can see it has become corrosive to my watercolour painting underneath A few things became abundantly clear to me here First, that perhaps I should follow recommendations more carefully Second that pushing through a fear-of-failure barrier is liberating and exciting and ultimately that we can discover things in places we least expect it, especially when were doing things we normally wouldnt. My personal discovery was that during this piece I finally realised (took me long enough) that although I really really like watercolour - I love oil and after swinging between the two mediums for two years, this was clarity that I had been waiting for. Anyway my point is... that trying something new should be fun and exciting regardless of the outcome. 21.01.2022 This was a commissioned portrait of a gorgeous teenage boy, for his Dad’s birthday. It was by far one of my more challenging commissions but I loved every moment of it!!! I used Windsor and Newton watercolour on clay board, and the whole piece was cradled on a beautiful oak frame and handed over ready to hang. #watercolourportrait #teenportrait #lovewatercolor
