24.01.2022 What an amazing 5 days at CPEC learning about movement challenges and communication. Positioning, weight-bearing, weight shifting, sensory processing and movement patterns all have an impact on access to communication. This course was incredible in teaching strategies that empower people who have movement challenges to build their independence and take ownership of their bodies and their movement. It also focused on direct access and alternate access methods for communication that utilise learnt movements.
24.01.2022 October is AAC Awareness Month. Look out for sales on AAC apps this month!
18.01.2022 The 1st - 7th March 2020 is Hearing Awareness Week. Children: Hearing loss in children can affect the sounds they hear and the sounds they say. They might learn to say words differently because they are missing sounds or hearing them differently. This can lead to difficulties with speaking, reading, learning at school and social skills. Early detection and early intervention is important to support communication success and development. Adults: The Royal Institute for Deaf an...d Blind Children recommends that adults over 50 have their hearing screened every 5 years either via a GP or a hearing app. If needed, this can then be followed by a hearing test. Nearly 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 is affected by hearing loss. Sound Scouts is a FREE government funded app that helps screen hearing loss in adults and children (aged 4 years 9 months and up). https://www.soundscouts.com/au/

06.12.2021 Happy International Sign Language Day. In Australia, the national sign language is Auslan. Auslan is used by about 30,000 people and has been recognised as an official language by the Australian Government since 1991. Because Auslan is a language, it has its own grammar and sentence structure which is different to English. Auslan also has fingerspelling, which is a different sign for each letter of the alphabet.
