24.01.2022 Sorry everyone we have to stay closed today... But we’ll be open tomorrow! #murrayfarmgatetrail #suncountryonthemurray
22.01.2022 OK... Without going into too much detail we have decided there is no benefit to reopening the Farm Gate Store until after the next garlic harvest. Which will start sometime in November. For us, like many, the COVID lockdown came at a particularly awkward time and has affected how much value added product we could make and how much fresh garlic we could move. Our regular markets all closed and the flow of touring customers completely stopped at one of our busiest times. ... It was a bummer but not a complete waste. In fact we take all of this as an opportunity to re-evaluate and re-direct our efforts. I have been opening up new ground and building new beds for a new venture, a ‘Bio-intensive Market Garden’. An exciting organic, no-till, regenerative growing system that I’ll be talking much more about in future posts and that I have alluded to in the past. I’m looking to expand on the garlic into a greater variety of nutritionally dense and really flavourful vegetables and salad greens... As each of our regular Markets start up again over the coming months we will assess our options and let you know. In the meantime if you need any of our products (and if we have it available) please contact us directly and we will sort you out either through the mail or via an organised visit. Once the new garlic is out of the ground we can start ramping up again. So thanks for your patience, stay healthy and we’ll see you all soon.
19.01.2022 Of all the things that make us feel good about what we are doing here the appearance of so many diverse fungi is right up there with frogs. The importance of these guys to a healthy ecosystem is so often ignored, underrated or unknown. #fungalhyphaeworkmagic #naturalgardening #foresthealth
17.01.2022 With the industrialisation of food so much diversity has been lost. Some of the real champions of the home garden fell out of favour for no other reason than them being less suitable to mechanisation... The true ‘shallot’, the ‘potato onion’ and something all home growers really should have the ‘Tree Onion’ (the big ones pictured) had all but disappeared from Australian gardens. They are Easy to grow, have long storage and great flavour. There are loads of types still out there hiding away in old gardens and lovingly curated by folks that have always known how good they are. Let’s all help them survive and thrive.
17.01.2022 Testing out one of our new Weapons of Mass Production... A new addition to our #notill system. Even though we’ve never really turned the soil, the broad fork (in this case a #gundarootiller) looks like a game changing addition to our ability to deepen our top soil. Apart from a lawn mower we only use hand tools. This year we’re refining our garlic growing system to become a much more bio intensive market garden set up. So watch out for even tastier and more nutrient dense gar...lic and other veggies as the system develops over the next months and years. We’re super excited. #notillmarketgardening #regenerativeagriculture #katamatitegarlic #carbonsequestration #murrayfarmgatetrail @ Katamatite Garlic See more
15.01.2022 Get excited folks! We’ve finally started making our #pickledgarlic for the season. It’s not clear yet how many jars we’ll be able to do (with a reduced crop) and we’ve already had a load of requests so my guess is they’ll only be available for a limited time this year. They still need to cure but we’ll have a couple of flavours available soon... #murrayfarmgatetrail #australiangarlic #permaculture

07.01.2022 Does anyone know the tool or magicians trick to get this innocent looking but supremely evil thing back on. It locks the wheel back on my mower.
05.01.2022 We need to stop this crazy war-on-weeds! The artillery we’re using causes far more destruction than any weed ever did. Our bees could never understand how we could call the plantain growing in our paths anything but awesome. #stopglyphosate #nosuchthingasaweed #regenerativeagriculture #savethebees #katamatitegarlic
04.01.2022 Hello Everyone, We will be down on the Yarrawonga Foreshore bright and early in the morning for the Yarrawonga Farmers Market. This is your last chance for the foreseeable future to pick up some of our delicious fresh garlic. We’ve got some great long-keeping cultivars that will keep you going through the long winter months. We may all need an immune boost to see us through.... I only have a very limited supply of planting garlic available too so get in early so you don’t miss out. Hope to see you all there one last time.
03.01.2022 If you’re wondering what we can possibly do in the face of ongoing and systemic environmental destruction. It is worth getting along to a screening of 2040. It’s nice to know there are some really worthwhile options for building a cleaner future for our kids... https://events.humanitix.com.au/2040-free-film-screening
01.01.2022 The great news is we are back at the Violet Town Market... This year we have only a limited supply of seed garlic available. I’ve only got 10 of our famous planting packs today so it’s worth getting in early. Each pack has two bulbs of three different cultivars, planting growing and harvesting instructions, a storage bag and for today only a bonus garlic peeler. It’s a beautiful morning here. Look forward to seeing you...
