24.01.2022 HELP NEEDED TO LAUNCH MINI LIBRARIES The Shire of Katanning is on the lookout for woodworkers to help bring the Free Wee Library project to town. The globa...l book-sharing initiative first started in Ireland and involves the installation of small wooden boxes across town which are stocked with free books to read and exchange. Shire of Katanning president Liz Guidera said volunteer woodworkers would be supplied their materials and she encouraged as many people as possible to jump on board.

22.01.2022 Hello Library and Gallery members! We know it’s been quiet on this page - but as you can imagine there is a lot going on behind the scenes. While the library and gallery are closed to the general public, we are still working in the buildings.... We understand that these institutions are important elements of our community and temporarily shutting them down will cause hardship for many. However, our best medical advice is that this is a necessary step to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. While the buildings will be closed, we are working on contingency plans to continue to provide services online. For now, we will be sharing resources from the State Library of WA for our members at home to access. You can become a SLWA member for FREE here https://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/our-services/membership and access lots more online resources. Please bear with us as we navigate this together.

16.01.2022 HARMONY FESTIVAL CANCELLATION Based on the statement made by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, today Friday 13 March 2020, including information that mass gatherin...gs of 500 people will be banned from Monday 16 March, the Shire of Katanning advises that all 2020 Harmony Festival events are now cancelled. Harmony Events, including Friday Food Night and Saturday Festival are both cancelled due to advice relating to mass gatherings. The Shire has also taken into account community concerns and are aligning our activities with the Health Authority advice to maintain the currently low and slow spread of this illness. Our first priority is the safety of everyone including attendees, our staff, all event stakeholders and members of our local community. There is no plan, at this point, to reschedule the Harmony Event in 2020.

07.01.2022 KATANNING FACILITIES STAGED APPROACH TO REOPENING The Shire of Katanning is currently working to meet the State Government’s requirements for the reopening of f...acilities. This includes the development of COVID 19 Safety Plans which are required to be completed for both the Leisure Centre and Library, prior to re-opening. Community and staff safety will continue to be our priority. We are also making modifications to our venues (such as screens, barriers and signage) to ensure safe environments for all. We are taking a staged approach to reopening our facilities and will not be reopening the Leisure Centre or Library until our plans and modifications are finalised. The Katanning Leisure Centre is working with Sporting clubs, to implement systems as they also have their own responsibilities under the COVID 19 Safety Plan. The Shire will continue to update the community on our plans via our social media and website www.katanning.wa.gov.au.

06.01.2022 The Golden Pen Award is now open, and this year's theme is Planet Earth Did you know that seeing Earth from outer Space permanently changes the brains of astronauts? Pretty cool, right? "Seeing Earth from this vantage point gave me a unique perspective - something I've come to call the orbital perspective. Part of this is the realisation that we are all traveling together on the planet and that if we all looked at the world from that perspective we would see that nothing is... impossible." - Nasa astronaut Ron Garan. What inspires you about planet Earth? In 3000 words or less, send us your fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, comic, or graphic novel about Planet Earth by Tuesday, 31 March 2020. There are great prizes and we'll publish your words on the Scribblers website! Ready to enter? Head here for all the deets: https://www.scribblersfestival.com.au/golden-pen or come in to the Katanning Public Library.

03.01.2022 COVID-19: CONTACT REGISTERS As of Saturday 5 December, the Katanning Library, Art Gallery and Community Room must maintain a contact register of staff and patrons for COVID-19 contact tracing, if required. When entering the facility you will be required to register your contact details. This includes patrons, staff, volunteers and contractors. The contact register records will only be held for 28 days.... If COVID-19 is detected in the WA community, contact registers help to protect us all by enabling the WA Health Contact Team to quickly identify and assist anyone that may have been exposed to COVID-19. To help, the WA Government has developed a free app, SafeWA, which will provide businesses with a digital contact register system. SafeWA is an efficient and safe way to record patron and visitor contact details where they can check-in, using the app. Click the link below to download the SafeWA app. https://safewa.health.wa.gov.au/
