25.01.2022 When it comes to the dates on your foods, do you know the difference between Best Before and Use By? If you have a product that is "best before" a certain date, it is still okay to eat for a while after this date, but it may have lost a bit of quality by this point. If your product has "use by" on it though, these foods are a little bit more serious. if sold and consumed after this date, they could pose a health and safety risk to the person consuming them, so it is best to f...ollow the label and dispose of these if they pass this date. Some products may have a "use by" date that is well into the future when you buy it, but keep an eye on "once opened" warnings too. Some of these products stay well preserved in their packaging, but once they are opened may only last a few days or weeks. Remember, foodborne illness can be serious, so if you are not sure about a food, trust your gut and dispose of it safely! See more
25.01.2022 During these unprecedented times, it's important to remember to check in on those most vulnerable in the community. Here are 3 fun ways for your kids to stay in touch with family and friends: 1. Teach them how to use technology! What about organising a weekly zoom catch up? 2. Share a skill. You could set up a virtual book club or play card games against each other online? 3. Become pen-pals! Teach your kids about how you used to catch up before the Internet and help them practise their writing skills!

23.01.2022 Anyone else excited for passionfruit season? Not only are these little fruits delicious, they have some great health benefits too! They are high in vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants to keep your body feeling great through the whole season. A great tip for eating them recommended by Aussie Passionfruit Growers is instead of cutting a passionfruit in half, just cut the top off and eat it like you would a boiled egg. This stops all the delicious juice from running out when sliced open, yum!

20.01.2022 Healthy' juices such as homemade smoothies and kombucha, might not be as good for you as you thought. If you or your children drink a lot of juices, you may be at risk of acid erosion of your teeth. Repeated exposure can lead to the gradual wearing away the hard tissues of the tooth. 'Healthy' beverages such as fruit juices (especially those containing citrus fruits e.g. oranges and lemons), kombuchas, cordials, vitamin waters contain acids that contribute to this problem. He...re are some simple ways you can prevent acid erosion on your teeth: Drink plenty of water, especially between meals If you do drink acidic beverages, try to do it while eating meals because the extra saliva production will help to neutralise the acid. Use a (reusable) straw to reduce the amount of acid your teeth are exposed to. Beware of claims that sugar-free beverages are better for your teeth. The lack of sugar may be good for preventing dental decay, but the drink may still be acidic. Avoid brushing your teeth straight after consuming acidic foods and drinks since it can help strip the now-softened top layer of enamel. Learn more about acidic drinks and how you can prevent acid erosion here: https://www.healthdirect.gov.au//juices-and-acid-erosion-i or feel free to come in chat to our Pharmacists about your oral health today!

16.01.2022 Even if you usually do not suffer from asthma or allergies, thunderstorm asthma is something you should know about. Thunderstorm asthma is triggered by a combination of grass pollen in the air and certain thunderstorm conditions. It can occur when pollen grains are drawn up into the clouds as a thunderstorm forms. The pollen grains absorb water, swell and burst open. Particles containing pollen allergens are released and are so small that they can be breathed into the lungs. The weather conditions can push these tiny particles down to ground level then along the ground in the winds that come ahead of the rain. Those who do suffer from asthma and hay fever are more at risk from serious complications due to thunderstorm asthma, so if this is you, come in and see our Pharmacist to make sure you have a plan ready.
16.01.2022 Spring is here, and that means it's also time for some spring cleaning! When you're on your usual cleaning blitz this year, don't forget to air out your bedding! Over Winter dust, dander and other nasties can accumulate as we often have doors and windows closed for long periods of time. Give doonas a good clean if you can, fluff out those pillows and give them some nice direct sunlight for a while
15.01.2022 Planning on doing a bit of gardening this spring? Grass and pollen allergies can affect those who suffer from them when it comes to tending the garden, but there are lots of ways to reduce your exposure and keep healthy this Spring! It is wise to avoid mowing the grass if you can, and stay inside when it is being mown. If you are the only one who can mow it, remember to wear a mask and take a non-drowsy antihistamine before you start that mower. Gardening in the mid-aftern...oon is also a wiser idea than gardening in the morning, as pollen counts can be higher as the morning dew evaporates. Choosing the right plants for your garden can help too. Plant flowers and trees that are insect-pollinated, rather than wind-pollinated to reduce the amount of pollen blowing around in your yard. If you need help with allergy symptom relief and prevention, have a chat to our Pharmacists today. See more

13.01.2022 Earwax isn't always a fun topic, but it is an important one. While it is natural and helps our ears to keep clean and healthy, sometimes it can build up a little and impact our hearing. It is important to NEVER clean your ears with a cotton bud or Q Tip! Putting things into your ears like that risks pushing wax further into the ear, causing wax build-up and possibly even damage to your eardrum! If your ears need a bit of a clean, come in and speak to our Pharmacist about safe ear cleaning techniques and solutions.
12.01.2022 Feel like you are juggling a million and one things in the lead up to Christmas? Take a couple of minutes out of your day to slow down. If you are going outside, even in your own yard, check the UV rating on the weather websites and protect your skin appropriately. If you are not sure where your sunscreen is, or which kind of sunscreen will be best for you and your family, come in and have a chat with our team today!

09.01.2022 The more the sun comes out, the more our striped yellow friends want to be out too! Most people will experience a bee sting at some point in their life, so knowing how to remove one properly is important. While your initial reflex might be to pinch it out, this can lead to more venom ending up in your system. Instead, remove the stinger by sliding your fingernail, or something with a firm edge like a bank card across it to slide it out of the skin. Wash the area, and apply... ice to reduce swelling. If the person who has been stung is allergic to bee stings, immobilise the person, apply pressure to the site, and seek immediate medical help. We have a lot of bugs and critters that can bite and sting us here in Australia, so knowing how to appropriately deal with each one is important for everyone! You never know when someone will need your help. For more information on other bites and stings, you can visit: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au//bites-and-stings-firs

07.01.2022 Now more than ever we know the importance of washing your hands properly. As a parent, you can follow these easy four step process to teach your kids about clean hands! 1. Get your hands wet in clean water. Put soap on your hands and make suds. 2. Rub your soapy hands together long enough to sing Happy Birthday in your head twice. Clean your palms, the back of your hands, and between your fingers. Don’t forget to clean under your nails. Nails can trap dirt and germs. ...3. Hold your hands under clean, running water. Rub them to rinse them fully. 4. Shake your hands a few times, then dry them with a clean towel or hand dryer. Done! Learn more here: https://www.stanfordchildrens.org/en/topic/default

06.01.2022 It's that time of year again where things REALLY start to heat up! Dehydration can be dangerous, but you can minimise your risk by staying hydrated and taking some simple measures to encourage you to drink more. Keep bottles of water in the fridge, so when you need a drink they are cool and ready to go. Making home-made icy poles out of water and fruit is another great way to refresh yourself on a hot day. Keeping rehydration supplements in the first aid kit is also a smart idea for those times when your body may need a little extra help. You can pick these up in the Pharmacy, so come in and see us and we can help you prepare for hot days ahead!
06.01.2022 When you ask Dr. Google how to remove a tick, you might not be getting the right information... A lot of websites will give you advice on how to remove American ticks, but the ticks we have here in Australia (like the paralysis tick) are different. Rather than going straight for the tweezers, your best option is to freeze the tick using products that contain ether. These will kill the tick and it should fall out after freezing. If it does not, using fine-tipped forceps to gra...b the tick as close to the skin as possible, and pull upwards using steady pressure. The freezing products are available in the Pharmacy. There are a few different kinds, so if you need one for your first aid kit, pop in and see us and we can find out which one will be best for you. You can read more about the do's and don'ts of tick removal here: https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/tick-bites See more

05.01.2022 It's time to talk about UV! UV stands for Ultraviolet, a type of radiation that is produced by the sun, and some artificial sources. Unlike light or heat, you cannot feel UV radiation, which is what makes it so deadly. UV can penetrate clouds too, so your skin can sustain a lot of damage from UV before you even notice. UV is measured in strength through the UV index, which can be found on weather forecast websites like http://www.bom.gov.au/uv/ Protection is recommended (s...unscreen, hats, glasses, covering clothing, you know the drill!) when the UV index reaches 3 or higher, so keeping an eye on the UV throughout the day will let you know how strong it is, and when to stay inside or in the shade and protect your skin. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 50+ can help provide you with extra protection when you are out and about in the open. If you are not sure what kind of sunscreen will be best for you, or you have sensitive skin, have a chat to our team and we can help you find a sunscreen solution! See more

03.01.2022 Have you got a snake bite kit? Australia is home to many different species of snake, and while the best way to handle one is to go nowhere near it, sometimes the unexpected can happen. Having a snake bite kit with you if you are out in the bush, or in your car or home can help you be prepared. Our team can help you put one of these together. A basic snake bite kit will usually contain: - 2-3 large heavy crepe bandages - Antiseptic cream - A thermal blanket... - A marker pen - A snake/spider bite guide Knowing what to do in the event of a snake bite could one day save your life, or the life of someone you love. To learn about what to do if someone is bitten by a snake, you can check out this page written by the Queensland government: https://www.health.qld.gov.au//what-to-do-if-you-get-bitte

02.01.2022 Ladies, what advice would you have given to yourself when you were a young girl if you could speak to her today? The world a lot of women grew up in is very different to the ones our daughters and granddaughters are growing up in, in both good ways and bad. The internet has kept us more connected with our friends and family than ever before, but it also invites the judgement of others into our homes through social media. Studies have shown that social media usage can have a serious effect on the mental health and self-esteem of young people, especially young girls, so raising them to have a healthy relationship with social media is crucial for happy, healthy young women.

01.01.2022 Foodborne illnesses like gastro can wreak havoc on our bodies, especially our gut and the delicate microbiome inside. 01.01.2022 As great as it is to have a never-ending stream of desserts on the table, don't forget the fruit this Christmas!
