04.01.2022 Happy World Environment Day to all our amazing supporters and Facebook followers! Today we wanted to share some very good news about one of our favourite bird s...pecies Malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata)!!! We have recently confirmed the very first Malleefowl chick hatching from a mound in a revegetated area at our Monjebup North Reserve in Western Australia! Watch to the end of the video to see the chick’s first foray into the outside world. It is proof that this mound, which we spotted early last year and have been monitoring closely ever since, is producing young! Our ecologists have previously found broken eggshell at the mound but no evidence of chicks making the successful journey out of the mound, so this news is incredibly encouraging for us and for wider Malleefowl conservation efforts. Malleefowl are monogamous and breed from around August to March. This particular chick hatched in February. Eggs are incubated in a mound nest that can be more than four metres in diameter and a metre high. The male Malleefowl is mostly responsible for building the nest. He uses his strong legs to scrape leaf litter and sand into a pile. Females then lay their eggs in a cavity in the top of the mound, which is then covered with leaf litter. Malleefowl may move up to 300 tons of soils in a single breeding season as they work to keep the mound temperature as close to 33 degrees as possible. Malleefowl are also known as Gnow, Lowan and the Mallee Hen, and, in the central desert of Australia, by the name Nganamara. So Happy World Environment Day from all of us here at Bush Heritage. We hope you enjoy this short video of Monjebup North's Malleefowl pair building their mound last year. Can you spot the feral predators?
