03.01.2022 BARBARA WEIR ‘Grass Seed’ 152 x 91 $7995.00... The Story - Grass Seed is about the importance of nature’s cycle for survival. Like Barbara Weir many women from Utopia paint the ‘survival foods’ they gather. The ability to survive in outback Australia is reliant on a deep understanding of the harsh landscape to be able to source food. I like to think of the women of Utopia as ‘environmentally friendly farmers’. They forage from the naturally occurring landscape and know when various foods can be found depending on the seasons. For example, over the course of the year with the seasonal changes and fires or rain (rain is a rare occurrence) the land changes and regenerates with fresh growth/produce. Before white fellas invaded and introduced what Barbara calls ‘white fella flour’ the people of Barbara’s community relied on the knowledge passed down from their ancestors who survived centuries in the harsh environment of Utopia. Utopia’s native grass was a life source and it was the women’s role to gather the grass seed which they used to make flour. The flour that they can make from the grass seed is a favourite as it can be ground to a very fine powder and makes for great bush damper. When the women travel across country they add water to the flour to make a moist dough which they carry with them and snack on. The dough is high in carbohydrates and keeps the women energised as they travel distances cross country.
