23.01.2022 I, along with my KROW writers group have spent the last couple of months organising a small writers festival as part of the Katherine Junk Festival. We started with a #20wordstory writing competition and comedy night at the Finch Café with one of the best Territory comedians Amy Hetherington. The local talent was fabulous and thank you to Will Crawford and 'Whether you're a lover or whether you’re a plover' Rusty Railroad for coming down from Darwin to support us! Saturday s...aw two workshops in progress with 10 people turning up for the Comedy Workshop with Amy and six working with Famous Australian Playwright and honorary Katherinite Alana Valentine (who does not do social media so wont see this) A long table lunch with Territory Author Leonie Norrington, followed by a discussion on book clubs with Sue Lester and my favourite publisher Sophie Hamley #hachetteaustralia Saturday night the fabulous JUNK FESTIVAL, where not only was there amazing junk sculptures, food wine and innovative fashion, but the huge crowd were entertained by local performers and dynamic new band on the Territory music scene, the MAMBALI BAND. The wrap up was a beautiful Literary Brunch and author discussion this morning at the National Trust O'Keeffe House. A beautiful setting on the banks of the Katherine River maintained by wonderful volunteers Merriel Lawrie and her very small gang of merry women. (Volunteers urgently needed!) There is so much talent and energy in this town, it is exhausting! Thank you KROW/NT Writers Centre/KRA and everyone for attending, helping and just being awesome people! Thank you Jo E Nicol / Warren Snowden and Sandra Nelson for the use of your office spaces for workshops.

04.01.2022 The way we say what we say: A workshop with playwright Alana Valentine Have you ever been told that all your characters sound the same? That they don’t speak with their own particular voice? This is a workshop for writers of fiction and drama to concentrate on how your characters express themselves the kinds of words they choose, the sorts of slang or jargon they include, the mannerisms and quirks of dialogue both on the page and the stage. ... Alana Valentine will explore how you can enhance both the individuality and credibility of your characters by paying particular attention to the specifics of their speech. Using examples and exercises from her many community-sourced and verbatim stage plays, she will work with participants on how to observe and listen to others so that you can recreate characters who are distinctive, charismatic and empathetic. Alana Valentine has been a regular visitor to the Northern Territory since 2006. In 2007 she recorded a radio feature Katherine Characters featuring short stories by Katherine writers, broadcast on ABC Radio National, and she returned again to work with the community on the script of Watermark, a work commemorating the 1998 flood. It was presented by 18 community performers in the Katherine cinema in January 2008. Watermark won the Australian Writers Guild Award for best Community and Youth Theatre in 2009 and was presented again at the Katherine Festival and Darwin Festival in 2009. In 2010 Alana’s play Head Full of Love was presented at the Darwin Festival, travelling to Cairns and Alice Springs. In 2018 her play Letters to Lindy, based on letters sent by the public to Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton also toured to 21 venues Australia wide, most memorably to Darwin where it sold out two incredible nights at the Darwin Entertainment Centre, then went on to play in Katherine, Tennant Creek, Gove and Alice Springs. Time and Date: 9am-12noon, Saturday, 1 June 2019 Venue: Warren Snowden’s office, Shop 7-9, 27 Katherine Terrace Cost: $40/$20 NTWC members This workshop is aimed at adults, but if any upper high school students are interested, email [email protected] to arrange a concession price of $20. This workshop is part of Write Off! within the Katherine Junk Festival. Click below to register.
