23.01.2022 Katherine Birdlife, building up for the season

22.01.2022 Meet the striking Gouldian Finch The Katherine region is one of the best places in the world to see these beautifully coloured finches. And breeding season ...means extra bright plumage! This helps them stand out against the fresh green wet season growth. Come the dry, their colours will start to fade. By the end of the year their entire population will moult as they get ready for the next breeding season. They can be a little difficult to spot this time of year but Marc was excited to find a flock feeding on Cockatoo Grass near Edith Falls last weekend. Marc Gardner

20.01.2022 Absolutely cracking day birding around Katherine for the Bird Festival today... early morning start up the Katherine River had fantastic range of photographic species including Great-billed Heron and this Australasian Darter, then off to Miniata Park (thanks Mick Jerram and Alex for the privilege) with Gouldian Finches, Banded Honeyeaters and finished off the day with a bunch of hard going punters to track down the elusive Chestnut-backed Buttonquail, and we found 7! One just about knocked Rick William's hat off! Another great Katherine Bird Festival day! Make sure you come along next year for more birding antics! (Buttonquail pic is not from today but from the same site we saw them this afternoon)

19.01.2022 We're all a bit buggered after the early mornings but it's been an absolute blast at the Katherine Bird Festival. The last day's highlights were Black Bittern, Great-billed heron and Peregrine Falcons - juvenile and adult. All long sightings in Katherine Gorge.

13.01.2022 This morning's Katherine Gorge boat cruise was a success with two Great-billed Herons calling in the sunlight for all to see! What a sound! Thanks to Nitmiluk Tours for a fantastic morning!

12.01.2022 Celebrating World Wetland’s Day today with Mick and Lynette, we started super early and headed South to Leach Lagoon on a friend’s property just off the Stuart ...Hwy South of Katherine. The Lagoon virtually dried out for the first time in memory last year until this wet season has slowly started filling it up again. To our surprise was a male Cicadabird very early in the morning, which is quite an inland record for this species. Waterbirds were fairly scarce but we easily saw 61 species in a short amount of time, including White-winged Trillers which were nesting. We then went down the Central Arnhem Road looking for Crested Shrike-tit but had no luck. We did have many birds, including lots of Black-tailed Treecreepers, with one immature coming right up close for a look at us. Several Black-chinned Honeyeaters were also sighted along the road. Yesterday afternoon, Lynette and I had one Oriental Pratincole at the Katherine Poo Ponds and over 190 Masked Lapwings all together on one bund - we counted them all. Further down the road past Chainman Creek right on dusk we found some Cockatiels and Hooded Parrots feeding in the grass. The Cockatiels allowed for some close up shots. See more

12.01.2022 Fantastic time at The Katherine Bird Festival again this year! so many cool birds and wildlife within easy reach of this region.

09.01.2022 Katherine Bird Festival 2020 kicked off to a great start today - bird walks this morning saw Gouldian Finches and we finished off with sunset drinks and canapes at Manbulloo Homestead and a fantastic bird quiz! Thanks to Brian and Steph and family, Mick Jerram and Amanda Lilleyman from Birdlife Australia Top End branch

08.01.2022 Happy birders during the KATHERINE BIRD FESTIVAL Katherine Gorge boat cruise. https://ebird.org/checklist/S73476320

08.01.2022 Here's some pics from the FANTASTIC Katherine Bird Festival. This is primarily of people because it's birds & people that make these things work. One of the best ever events I've ever been to with Janine Duffy

07.01.2022 Varied Lorikeets. Often seen in the region but sometimes present in large numbers.

07.01.2022 Katherine Bird Festival is done and dusted for another year! A big thank-you to all of our venues, volunteers and guests that made 2019 so successful. Of course our feathered friends will still be out and about, so please do continue to share your birding stories and photos with us! If you have stories and photos from this Bird Fest, please inbox us! We would love to hear from you Marc Gardner

06.01.2022 It was a honeyeater extravaganza this morning with Banded He’s probably exceeding all. We had about 20 Masked Finch and a cameo of 3 Gouldians including a male and a female red-headed. The heat and dry conditions will be a challenge! See the checklist below https://ebird.org/australia/checklist/S73442142

04.01.2022 A few pics from the recent Katherine Bird Festival, where I successfully trained myself not to keep looking for crocodiles (success, I didn't see a single one!).... Fortunately I had much better birders around to spot these. No idea what order Facebook will show them: great billed heron in flight, Australasian darter having a yawn, black bittern skulking, white-faced heron being chased by its shadow. See more

04.01.2022 Katherine Bird Fest's newest recruit... this day old Black Fronted Dotterel chick wins the cutest bird award... exactly the same time as last year, newly hatched chicks around the Katherine Bird Fest are adored... hope you agree! Photo: Marc Gardner (yes, using a super zoom lens, and cropped, not to cause the little blighter an ounce of trouble, mum and dad close by)
