25.01.2022 Message from the Victorian Pride Lobby for Port Phillip crs after the motion I put enacting the Rainbow Local Government pledge actions was voted down on Wednesday night. I am still so upset about this. This is important work on inclusion that could have been underway now. But will keep working until each of these actions is taken up in our city

23.01.2022 "[T]he San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the ban on gas in buildings. They cited the potency of methane as a greenhouse gas, and recognised that natural gas is a major source of indoor air pollution, leading to improved public health outcomes."

21.01.2022 "Port Phillip City Council has a proud history of welcoming the LGBTIQA+ community, but the split vote leaves a grey cloud over its commitment to our community." The Victorian Pride Lobby on JOY 94.9 speaking about the Rainbow Local Government pledge vote.

21.01.2022 The loss of the Notorious RBG has sent a shockwave of sorrow around the world. I had to share the beautiful sentiments that local legend Janine posted today, I think they are a fitting tribute to a woman who worked for justice all her life and has left our world a far better place than she found it. Janine says:... "An extraordinary woman has left the world poorer today. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a US Supreme Court Justice since 1993. She stood up for women, the environment and minorities. She didn't give up. The thing I learn from reading about people like her is to never give up. Yes, it's easier to relax and have a comfortable life. Yes, it's easier to just go along and not be labelled 'prickly' or 'opinionated'. But I think we all have a responsibility to the future, and to others who are not as fortunate, and those that can't speak." Rest in power, Ruth. May we be worthy of continuing your legacy. 19.01.2022 Great news today on #CashForCans! Congratulations to all the community members and enviro groups who have campaigned for this for so long!

19.01.2022 We don’t need to wait for climate action at a state or federal level. We can lead solutions from a local level that tackle the climate crisis while building thriving local economies at the same time That’s why your vote in this Local Government election will be more important than ever. Unlike other candidates, Greens Councillors don’t take donations from vested interests like big property developers, pokies or the fossil fuel industry.... In Port Phillip, we've already recognised the #ClimateEmergency and moved Council to 100% renewables. If re-elected I'll continue to work hard to take climate action, including: Helping residents, businesses and community organisations save energy and switch to fossil free power Electrifying Council's fleet Greening our streets for a cooler and more biodiverse city And so much more! 15.01.2022 With lots more people jumping on their bikes during lockdown, it's an important time to be investing in active and sustainable transport options! Healthy and safe transport choices can be a positive part of our COVID-19 recovery and we need to invest in bike infrastructure to support that. I'll keep standing up for better local walking and cycling infrastructure. If you haven't yet, check out the Victorian Greens plan for a Bike Superhighway all the way from Elsternwick to Coburg (via Port Phillip!) - https://greens.org.au/vic/campaigns/gnd-transport

12.01.2022 "All Australians should celebrate and be proud of the culture, survival and achievements of the oldest living culture on Earth, and NAIDOC Week is our opportunity to do that. By ‘living’ I mean that our culture continues to not only survive, but flourish and change over time." A powerful reflection on the history and opportunity for reflection NAIDOC Week holds for us all from Lidia Thorpe.

11.01.2022 Green, active neighbourhoods have been essential to maintaining our wellbeing during lockdown. Over the last term of Council we've opened new parks in Port Phillip, increased the accessibility of our beaches and planted more trees to keep our streets cool and provide habitat to support local biodiversity. It doesn't stop in our city! Across the state, Greens councillors have been keeping our neighbourhoods green and liveable for people and animals alike. Here's the short li...st of things that Greens councillors have achieved in just four years across Victoria: Planted tens of thousands of trees Led the introduction of urban forest plans Created new dog parks and open spaces Enhanced local environment with new parks and sanctuaries Enacted biodiversity policies to protect flora and fauna Created and expanded safe bike lanes and trails Built new footpaths and coastal walks Introduced active transport strategies Wherever you are, you can find your local Greens candidate at: https://greens.org.au/vic/finder This council election, let's vote to keep greening our neighbourhoods

08.01.2022 The Star Observer has covered the Rainbow Local Government pledge vote in Port Phillip. "Niki Giokas, Convenor of the Victorian Pride Lobby, that had launched the Rainbow Pledge initiative, said that the Port Phillip council should come clean about whether it continues to support the LGBTQIA+ community. The outcome of the split means that Council is stuck in a grey zone. We hope that all Councillors can work together to find a way forward in the coming weeks, said Giokas...." 02.01.2022 Our local services help make our city a welcoming, caring and inclusive place to live. A big part of why I'm standing for re-election is to keep defending important services like childcare and support for people experiencing homelessness. These will continue to be crucial to our community's recovery as we emerge from COVID-19. At the state level too the Victorian Greens are leading calls for a care-led recovery to support our community - add your support at https://greens.org.au/vic/campaigns/victoria-cares

02.01.2022 Gutted to share that last night four councillors voted down a motion I'd prepared to enact the Rainbow Local Government pledge in Port Phillip. The motion would have Asked for a report on obtaining Rainbow Tick accreditation for Council run services Established an LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee... Created an LGBTIQA+ Action Plan Displayed flags on LGBTIQA+ awareness days Noted Council's continued support for and participation in Pride and Midsumma It's particularly hard to swallow given 8 of the 9 councillors elected in Port Phillip signed up to the Rainbow Local Government pledge as an election commitment. I am heartbroken thinking of the difference these actions would have made - from giving a voice and channeling the great ideas from the many passionate community members we have from the LGBTIQA+ community through the committee, to ensuring our services keep striving towards best practice in inclusion and specialised training for staff. I was particularly interested in what the report would say about priority service areas for accreditation - our Family, Youth and Children's services come to mind, surely we want to make these services as welcoming and safe as possible for all young people and their families? Surely that is worth at least getting at a report on? To everyone in the rainbow community, allies and all who push for inclusion and social justice in our city, I know moments like this can be dispiriting. Please know I will keep working to see these pledge actions enacted in Port Phillip. The fight goes on
