24.01.2022 TIPS FOR COPING WITH CORONAVIRUS ANXIETY If you are feeling more anxious than usual, you are not alone. Since the announcement by WHO that Covid-19 has become ...a pandemic, there have been major disruptions to our daily lives and the ability to plan as usual . We have witnessed cancellation upon cancellation of major events, university campuses closing down, panic buying and higher levels of infection control. These are naturally anxiety-triggering events and increase levels of uncertainty on a scale most of us have probably not ever experienced before . In response to this, the Australian Psychological Society has released some helpful tips on managing the anxiety many of us are feeling right now . Please take the time to read for yourself and share with a friend . Were in this together https://www.psychology.org.au//20APS-IS-COVID-19-Public-P2

24.01.2022 GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING PANDEMIC RESPONSE PLAN . There was welcome news today as the Federal Health Minister @greghuntmp revealed a $48.1 million commitment to the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Pandemic Response Plan. This adds to the $74 million already announced in March... . These much needed funds will assist with the distress and anxiety that many Australians are reporting during #covid19 . Loneliness, financial strain and general anxiety has been a common experience for many people and there are still gaps in the delivery of mental health services to meet these needs. Remarkably, 957, 000 services have been delivered in the past four weeks . Mental health clinicians are applauding the commonwealth commitment to assist people during this time, and of course during the recovery period and adjustment back to a new normal - I am personally hoping to see Medicare funded sessions increase from 10 to 20 sessions and a continuation of telehealth consultations #mentalhealth #covid19 #wellbeing #psychology
24.01.2022 BACK TO SCHOOL Happy first day back to school! Hope you had a smooth morning getting your little ones off to school, but in case you didnt, dont lose heart. Im sure there were countless families doing last minute searches for school hats and matching socks, packing lunch boxes (or maybe discovering old lunches in the bottom of the bag ), frantically running out the door and then back in again for forgotten things... and finally jumping into the traffic to beat the bell... For some of you there may have been a few nerves to calm, a zillion questions to answer and maybe even tears to dry. Returning to school after a long break can often trigger worries and of course some are starting at new schools or transitioning to high school. These are huge steps Whatever the day brings, I hope your children have a wonderful school year. And for those that are finishing and in year 12, work hard (but not too hard ), create fun memories and shoot for the stars #backtoschool #education #schoolanxiety #keepcalm
24.01.2022 STAY CONNECTED During unprecedented times of being told we should socially distance ourselves, or worse, self-isolate, it is extra important that we make an eff...ort to stay connected . For my regular clients, I will continue to offer my services as normal. However, should you or I require to remain at home during this time due to sickness or prevention, lets communicate with each other and arrange an alternative like a telehealth appointment - I have this set up and am ready to roll when needed . Phone or video can still be very effective at delivering psychological support and treatment, and the Government is making efforts to support this with some Medicare funding. . If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact me
22.01.2022 The news we’ve been waiting for! Very happy with this sensible decision to extend telehealth for another 6 months
21.01.2022 KEEP GOING If you have made some progress than you are making progress, so keep going . Goals are not meant to be easy, otherwise they wouldn’t be called that. If you have challenged yourself to achieve something, remember to look at what you have achieved so far... . Pat yourself on your back and acknowledge your growth, your change, your effort, your work... whatever it is you’re doing...you are getting there! . . . #goals #progress #achievement #keepgoing #focus #effort
21.01.2022 MENTAL HEALTH MONTH Each year in October we are encouraged to think about and become more aware of our mental health and wellbeing . The theme for this month is TUNE IN. This means being present, being aware of what’s happening within you, and in the world around you (wayahead.org.au) WayAhead - Mental Health Association NSW... . Tuning in helps us to increase our self awareness and to respond with more effective or helpful choices. This might be in how we respond to our own emotions or urges and how we connect and relate with others . Take time this month to be more intentional about tuning in. And, if needed (or for extra help tuning in) follow this up with your GP or a psychologist . . . #mentalhealthmonth #tunein #psychology #mentalhealthawareness #october

14.01.2022 INSPIRATION Feeling inspired is right at the top of my favourite states to be in! Inspiration possesses both mental and emotional components that are closely associated with a sense of awe or wonder ~ Scott Barry Kaufman, psychologist and author, says it best, In a culture obsessed with measuring talent and ability, we often overlook the important role of inspiration. Inspiration awakens us to new possibilities by allowing us to transcend our ordinary experiences and li...mitations. Inspiration propels a person from apathy to possibility, and transforms the way we perceive our own capabilities. (Source: Harvard Business Review, 2011)* ~ We can seek out inspiration in countless ways and is often highly individual; what one person finds inspiring might differ to another person’s idea of inspiration. For me, I recently felt inspired when I visited a private property that was decorated with beautiful trees, vegetable patches, fruit vines and chooks. I was in awe of the work and creativity that had been put into making this special garden and the enjoyment this cultivated for the home owners. I took away ideas for my own and felt a sense of ‘possibility’ for what I could make happen (see pics ) ~ What inspires you? * https://hbr.org/2011/11/why-inspiration-matters Harvard Business Review #inspiration #positive emotions #postivepsychology #gardensaregood #aweandwonder
13.01.2022 MY MENTAL HEALTH COMMITMENT This long weekend I have been ‘tuning in’ to my own mental health and well-being needs. #tuneine is the theme for mental health month and it has been beneficial to follow this advice . REST is something I am paying more attention to, and as such, have decided to commit to this as part of #mentalhealthmonth ... . In the world’s largest survey on rest and well-being by Durham University (2016), researchers found that 68% of respondents said that they would like more rest and 32% said they needed more rest than the average person. Interestingly, those who said they got sufficient rest (or at least didn’t want more rest) showed well-being scores that were twice as high than individuals who wanted more rest . People’s ability to take rest, and their levels of well-being, are related stated the lead researcher (source: Science Daily*) . So what did the survey reveal about restful activities? The top five things people did were (in order from highest 58% to lowest 40%): reading being in nature being on their own listening to music doing nothing in particular . Not surprisingly, common barriers to rest are ‘being busy’ and perceptions of being ‘lazy’ - which can then lead to feelings of guilt . I think I’m going to steal some ideas from the list above and and enjoy more rest this month. Who’s with me? . * Durham University. "Rest and well-being: World's largest survey." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 28 September 2016.

12.01.2022 HANG IN THERE! This is the second week of the HSC and our year 12s are feeling it (probably parents too haha). 08.01.2022 SAYING HELLO Thought Id report in to say hi Im recharging here in the tropics of North QLD. 06.01.2022 EXERCISING 4 TIMES A WEEK WILL IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING A recent study published in Health Psychology found that, among a generally healthy but sedentary group of adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s, working out lowers levels of depression, hostility and other negative feelings. The study also showed that the positive impact on mood continued for weeks even after the participants stopped working out. ...
