22.01.2022 We are all paying attention to the protest movement and reactionary violence in America, not only out of sympathy and horror, but to prepare ourselves for a similar threat from the far right in Australia. The awful coincidence of a shooting by the far right in America in the same week as the sentencing for the far right perpetrator of the Christchurch massacre, an Australian man, reminds us to be vigilant of the danger lurking in our own backyard. We stand in solidarity with... anti-racist and anti-fascist activists around the world, including the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism here in Melbourne. Join us tonight at CARF Forum tonight for analysis and discussion introduced by veteran anti-racist activist, and Victorian Socialist candidate in Darebin Omar Hassan. All anti-racists welcome! https://www.facebook.com/events/237262624204095?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[%7B%22mechanism%22%3A%22search_results%22%2C%22surface%22%3A%22search%22%7D]%7D
22.01.2022 Victorian Socialists condemn Pauline Hanson attacks on public housing residents 11 September 2020 Victorian Socialists stand with public housing residents against Pauline Hansons latest racist and anti-working class stunt. When in July this year public housing residents were placed under a hard lockdown with their homes encircled by hundreds of police, Hanson launched a racist attack. Hanson spewed racist bile directed at residents: playing on the fact the public housing p...Continue reading
22.01.2022 This October, during a recession and lockdown, Victorians will vote in local council electionsthe last before new laws will make it almost impossible to elect minor party candidates. Thanks to a massive volunteer-driven campaign, voters will have a chance to reject the status quo and to vote for socialist candidates throughout the northern and western suburbs.
22.01.2022 Aged care facilities are at the centre of Victoria's second wave of covid transmission. Of 3,488 active cases recorded on Wednesday, 1,487 were in aged care facilities. The overwhelming majority of these are in private and for-profit aged care centres. Private facilities are criminally under-regulated, with no mandatory staff-resident ratios, and no requirement to have medically trained nurses on call at all times. Understaffing, overcrowding of residents, a lack of PPE and b...asic sanitation have all turned a manageable outbreak in these centres into a disaster. St. Basil's aged care centre in Fawkner faces a class action from residents after it has been revealed that they took four days to alert the Health department of an outbreak, allowed sick staff and visitors to enter, and failed to mandate the wearing of masks. This criminal, profit-driven negligence cost 31 lives in that facility alone. We seeing in these outbreaks the effects of rampant privatisation, supported by Liberal and Labor governments at the federal level and all major parties at the council level. Currently, only 10% of aged care beds in Victoria are run by the government. We need to reverse the neoliberal tide which has prioritised the profits of private providers over the health and lives of the sick and elderly. Every one of these facilities should be taken under public ownership, and the owners of centres where greed and negligence has lead to death should be brought to justice.
21.01.2022 Definitely a top memory of my time at working in rail. The 2015 strike, where we took the fight up to the State Labor government and our employer Metro. The first railway strike in almost two decades. Here are my Flinders street comrades and I just after walking off the job at protest of Metro's refusal to accept really basic demands like trauma leave for rail operations staff who witness traumatic events on the job, protection of the 8 hour day and penalties, a pay rise and ...a number of other workplace conditions. We marched up from Flinders Street to meet train drivers and rail workers from all over the network (as well as some vline and trammie allies) where we had a mass meeting. And marched back down to Flinders Street, this time in much bigger number and having swapped our standard blue union shirts for our strike day red RTBU "we run this network" shirts. As we got closer to Flinders Street we heard the supportive roar of trade unionists from across the movement who had gathered to join us in solidarity. I'm proud to say that strike won us many of our key demands. Sadly due to the absolutely unjust industrial laws we did not repeat this strike action in 2018/19- as a result the EA we got, while certainly having some gains, was not the result many of us hoped for. I hope we've learnt some things from all of these experiences. To repeat and further the gains of 2015 it's going to be crucial to rebuild the rank and file strength that allowed that strike to happen. Something we need to see more of across the workers movement.
21.01.2022 Sally Capp wants to sacrifice lives for profit The Victorian Socialists condemn Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp for criticising Victorias restrictions and pushing for targets to be lifted. In the context of a deadly global pandemic, Capp has lent her full-throated support to a right-wing, pro-business campaign that would sooner see more COVID-19 cases and deaths if that means bosses and their businesses can get back on their feet.... Eliminating community transmission of the virus before a vaccine is developed and made available is a sane, humane approach to public health that prioritises the lives of ordinary people. Victorian Socialists stands with the clear majority of Victorians who support lockdown measures, such as business and school closures, and mask-wearing. Kath Larkin, Victorian Socialists lord mayor candidate for Melbourne, says: When Sally Capp calls for Premier Daniel Andrews to drop the states zero case target, shes trading human lives for corporate profit. Instead of bending over backwards for the wealthy, Capp should be pressuring both state and federal government to extend helpsuch as JobKeeper and JobSeekerto those who are genuinely suffering during this pandemic: those in insecure and casual work, migrants and international students. Chris di Pasquale, Victorian Socialists candidate for Melbourne City Council, says: Spain, France and the UK are now recording their highest daily tallies since the start of the pandemic. They too opened up ahead of time so businesses could recoup profits. This is the future that awaits Melbournians if Sally Capp gets her way.
21.01.2022 Prominent anti-racist activist of the Campaign Against Racism and Fascism and Victorian Socialists lead candidate for Melbourne City Council, Chris di Pasquale, speaks out against the attacks on public housing residents by racist, far-right One Nation senator Pauline Hanson and millionaire Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate. 21.01.2022 Daniel Nair Dadich is a Kensington local, a first generation Australian and the son of migrant and refugee workers. Daniel began attending protests in 2000 when he skipped school to attend the S11 protest. While studying Daniel volunteered at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre which opened his eyes up to the injustices that asylum seekers face in Australia. Upon graduating with a Masters in Social Work, Daniel has worked at two organisations now, supporting asylum seekers waiting in limbo for the Immigration Department to make a decision on their refugee claims and supporting refugees to build a new life in Australia. In both workplaces he became the Australian Services Union delegate. 18.01.2022 Workers should refuse to destroy the sacred Djab Wurrung trees. In a world with more strong left-wing unions, and a more politicised working class, this travest...y would not take place. If workers refused to participate in this racist, genocidal destruction, then maybe Daniel Andrews would have to go and do the dirty work himself instead of patting himself on the back, eating donuts and drinking whiskey. 18.01.2022 The Victorian Socialists team for Melbourne city council is an all union ticket, including ASU delegate and deputy lord mayor candidate Daniel Dadich. As front line workers and unionists ourselves we want to see a council that stands with its workers and were delighted to sign this ASU pledge.. Many local government workers have continued to deliver for their communities throughout the pandemic providing essential community services such as cleaning, removing waste, maintaining parks and gardens, supporting some of our most vulnerable community members and more. These workers deserve respect, dignity, job security, safety and good wages. Victorian Socialist will stand against privatisation and outsourcing. And stand with council workers and their union in demanding a fair deal.

15.01.2022 The proposed plan under the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal will drastically change this community asset. The plan is set to double overhead costs for traders - forcing traders to pass this cost onto the community by charging more for their goods, or alternatively only big businesses will flourish as they can afford these higher fees. The plan will also reduce the market space allocating half of the upper market to other purposes. Fewer traders will mean less diversit...y in products. Produce will also be kept in underground storage sheds and traders will be limited to stocking the market to before 9am and no later. This establishes a trading model which is similar to a supermarket, by limiting the turnover of produce and its freshness. Research has proven that a poor diet is the result of a low income and not the lack of education. Driving up the prices of products will have a negative effect on the community which have relied on the market for fresh, affordable products. These changes also remove the unique community atmosphere and culture which has been established in Queen Victoria Market. Queen Victoria Market has been providing the community with fresh, quality, varied and affordable products for over 150 years. But the market we know and love is now under threat. If elected, Victorian Socialists candidates will campaign to reject the Precinct Renewal plans as they stand and advocate for a market which serves the community and not the interests of those who put profits over health.
15.01.2022 Ordinary, working-class Victorians have shown incredible goodwill and fortitude in accepting lockdown restrictions in the interest of public health. We understand the importance of beating this virus and preventing its spread. Dan Andrews and Lisa Neville are taking advantage of that goodwill to ramp up policing of our communities. There is no public health justification for having PSOs with 12 weeks' training patrolling crowded places with firearms and we should resist this authoritarian creep.
14.01.2022 Solidarity with the protesters who challanged the worst climate criminals when they descended on Melbourne. If elected to Melbourne City Council Victorian Socialists will fight to push climate crimnals like this out of our city, will deffend the right to protest and stand with climate justice activists.
14.01.2022 Privatised aged care has been an absolute disaster, well before the pandemic we saw the horrors of this system. To think you can work your whole life making profits for the bosses and then when youre old and can no longer make them money, you just get thrown on the scrap heap. Victorian Scoailists will continue to campaign to bring aged care back into public hands, to stand with aged care and health workers in their demands for PPE, ratios, improved training, leave entitleme...nts and better resources. Councils have a responsibility to ensure safety standards in local businesses, if elected we will increase inspections, investigate complaints and work with residents, their families and workers to hold private operators to account. Comments bellow from Victorian Scoialist member and volunteer Sandra Bloodworth: THE SCANDAL THEY CALL AGED CARE is simply criminal Its infuriating the way corruption by corporations is reported so that it is never described for what it is: criminal, often even legally, but always morally so. Take the info presented to the enquiry into Aged Care this morning. Federal govt hands out billions of $s of our money to private operators WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED! They dont have to report what they spend the money on, how much is used for the purpose it was granted for. Unsurprisingly, Very little goes where it was supposed to. Corruption by any decent persons standards, but ABC and presumably every media outlet refers to a lack of transparency. As soon as you hear those words, think corruption. And think what it means, the wealthy scum we have seen profiled during this crisis for the elderly are pocketing public money to feed their luxuries while running homes more like hell holes, paying a pittance to over worked, inadequately trained staff, poor food, the list is a mile long. These are crimes, but they have done nothing illegal. If ever there were a case that proves what is wrong with the public-private arrangements, privatisation and all the neoliberal policies which have got us into this mess, this is it. Another issue for Victorian Socialists running in council elections. Councils must be able to demand transparency if not an end to private aged care facilities in their area and demand governments pay for the care of the elderly instead of subsidising the obscene life styles of wealthy corporate criminals
14.01.2022 Housing is a human right. Victorian Socialists will fight for affordable housing for all. We are fighting for a revolution in public housing, a five year rent freeze, real support for residents in housing stress and calling for a genuine moritorium on evictions. We commit to organising eviction defence for Melbourne residents who are unable to pay rent.
14.01.2022 Proud to wear it purple at work with my RTBU comrades today. Im proud to be part of a union that has taken a stand against not only anti-LGBTI discrimination in the workplace but has fought against Homophobia and Transphobia in society more broadly. I have fond memories of the workplace actions we organised for marriage equality in 2015
13.01.2022 Next Saturday join this meeting of activists, public housing residents and housing experts hosted by Victorian Socialists to discuss the housing crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic. The public housing wait list is enormous, homelessness is growing, half of low income earners are paying more on accomodation than they can afford- and yet thousands of apartments and houses lay empty so that greedy landlords can attempt to make maximum profit and the Andrews Labor government is selling off public housing. Housing should be a human right, not a commodity! Join us to discuss how we fight back next Saturday 14 of September over zoom
13.01.2022 Melbournes workers and residents struggle to have their voices heard on a council dominated by business interests. We need a change - we need representatives on Melbourne City Council that will fight for workers and the citys poor and marginalised communities. Thats why Victorian Socialists is standing a ticket of front line workers, trade union and social justice activists: Kath Larkin (Lord Mayor); Daniel Dadich (Deputy Lord Mayor); Chris Di Pasquale & Jesse Lambourn (council). 10.01.2022 Horse drawn carriages should be banned from the streets of Melbourne. This is an antiquated practice that treats horses like commodities to be used for profit with little regard to their health and well being. They are subject to pollution and loud noises. They are made to work in all sorts of weather conditions and many are injured or develop health conditions related to walking around all day on roads and navigating traffic. But Victorian Socialists will not stop there if ...elected. We will also campaign to close the Victorian Police Mounted Branch, who also treat horses in a horrible way with little regard to their health and wellbeing. These horses undergo harsh training to desensitise them, so that they will follow orders to charge into crowds of people. This "training" involves subjecting the horses to abusive situations where police trainers act aggressively towards them, creating both physical and noise related abuse. What other way could these gentle creatures be trained to charge into innocent people? The mounted branch are common sites at protests where they are used as weapons against peaceful protesters, resulting in both innocent people and horses being severely injured. See more
10.01.2022 The City of Melbourne recorded 51 heroin-related deaths between January 2015 and September 2019. All the research points to the fact that these deaths can be brought down significantly through Medically Supervised Injecting centres (MSICs) We are in desperate need of an MSIC in Melbourne. Not only will it save lives but there are a range of benefits to the entire community; such as reducing pressure on our hospital and ambulance services and reducing the presence of sharps di...scarded in public places. Victorian Socialists will fight for an MSIC in Melbourne and for its exact location and service model to be based on consultation with likely service users and the community and health providers that support them. For more myth busting about MSICs please see this great fact sheet put out by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation https://adf.org.au//medically-supervised-injecting-centres/ And to hear directly about the significant positive impact of an MSIC listen to Kevins story here https://www.uniting.org//uniting-medically-supervised-inje

09.01.2022 Don’t miss your chance to vote for the Victorian Socialists this council election - ballots must be posted by 6pm tomorrow Friday 23rd of October
08.01.2022 Many of us were horrified when in July the Victorian government imposed a hard lock down on public housing residents, where police besieged the homes of poor front line workers, including many refugees and migrants with past trauma of detention and authoritarian governments, and without any serious plan or mechanism to ensure peoples basic human needs were met. This atrocious police response, where a health response was needed, shed a light not just on the government's raci...sm, and mishandling of the COVID crisis that led to the second wave, but on decades of successive governments deliberate neglect of public housing. If elected to Melbourne City Council, Victorian Socialists will fight for a voice for public housing residents on council- replace the current Lord Mayors captains of industry advisory committee with a public housing residents advisory committee. We will use our positions to advocate for and provide public housing residents with what they need to be safer through this pandemic: multi language health campaigns, provision of hand sanitiser and masks. And we will continue to campaign for a revolution in public housing: - Clear the 80,000 people waiting list for public housing - Build thirty thousand new housing units in three years, fifty thousand in five years, and a hundred thousand places within eight years. - A massive increase in resources for repairs in public housing, so residents dont need to fight for basic upkeep

08.01.2022 Two Melbournes exist side-by-side. Theres the Melbourne of the rich: a city of property developers, hospitality moguls and landlords. And theres the Melbourne of the rest of us: a city of international student exploitation, of public housing residents driven out of the city, of students and young workers struggling to make rent each month. Im an ESL teacher in a private college in the CBD and I see firsthand the effects of neoliberalism on this citys poorest. Im also a s...ocialist whos fought and helped lead many campaigns in defence of societys oppressed and exploited, such as against cuts to higher education, against racism and the far right, and for LGBT rights. What makes Melbourne great isnt its laneways and street art. Its that this city has a history of struggle and protest. Melbourne is where two Aboriginal freedom fighters Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner, were hanged for resisting invasion. Melbourne is where stonemasons at Melbourne University downed tools to win the eight-hour day. Melbourne is where Zelda DAprano protested to win equal pay for women. As a socialist voice on council, I want to stand in this tradition of radical Melbourne. This means fighting corporate developers trying to privatise every square inch of public space. This means defending public housing residents from a state government that wants to sell them out. This means tearing down monuments to genocidal colonists so that we can have an honest lesson in the history of this citys founding. This means fighting for the rights of workers and the poor who have to live and work in the city, over the interests of bosses who have undue sway over how the city runs. Melbourne could be a liveable city for all, but only if we fight for it. To get involved in the campaign: www.victoriansocialists.org.au Authorised by Corey Oakley, 54 Victoria St, Carlton VIC 3053
07.01.2022 50% of low income earners in greater Melbourne, are experiencing housing stress- that is they're paying more for accommodation then they can afford. And right here in the Melbourne city council area, most city workers commute for over an hour each day. The people who contribute so much, who make this city run, simply cannot afford to live here anymore. Working class communities are being pushed out of inner Melbourne. Victorian Socialists will fight for housing affordability... by: - Providing rate relief to resident home owners experiencing housing stress - Advocate for a five year rent freeze - Demand the government close loopholes and impose a real moratorium on evictions now - Campaigning to expand and improve public housing
07.01.2022 Make housing a human right! Land lords should not be allowed to hoard property in an attempt to make maximum profit while people are sleeping in the streets
06.01.2022 Kath Larkin, our candidate for Lord Mayor, has fond memories of living in Carlton as a student, and less fond memories of working as a hyper-exploited hospitality worker in this city. Shes a rail worker at Flinders Street Station, where she became the first woman in that workplace to be elected as a delegate for the Rail Tram & Bus Union, and in 2015 was extremely proud to be one of the rank-and-file leaders of the first strike on the Victorian railways in almost two decade...s. More recently her union activity has centered on fighting for safer workplaces and economic security in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Kath is a long-time protest organiser, and has played an active role in the fight for refugee rights, equal marriage and climate justice. She was an organiser of last year's Blockade IMARC campaign, which aimed to put a halt to a gathering of some of the world's worst environmental vandals right in the centre of Melbourne. Its a disgrace that local politicians invited these climate criminals to convene in our city. Victorian Socialists will campaign to end the dominance of big business in Melbourne and instead give power to the workers who make the city run. Get involved in the campaign: www.victoriansocialists.org.au/volunteer Authorised by Corey Oakley, 54 Victoria St, Carlton VIC 3053
05.01.2022 Barcelona has warned landlords that if they dont fill their vacant dwellings with tenants the city will seize them to house the homeless. Victorian Socialists are calling on the state government to do the same here. Right here in Melbourne we have an estimated 6,548 empty dwellings, that's 11% of all dwellings in Melbourne.* In the middle of winter on a single night there were an estimated 279 people sleeping rough**. With a total of 34,844*** people in Inner Melbourne as a ...whole either homeless or living in insecure housing. It is a sick reality of capitalism that housing, rather than being a human right, is treated as a commodity- so we can have apartments laying empty alongside a desperately long public housing wait list and growing homelessness. 05.01.2022 Dear VS supporters, We need to ask you for money. We wont know for sure until Sunday whether the government will extend Stage 4 lockdowns after September 13. But the case numbers being reported lately make it highly likely that there will continue to be severe restrictions in place throughout the campaign period for local government elections, which are now only a few weeks away.... That means, we are sorry to say, that money matters more than ever in this campaign. Victorian Socialists pride ourselves on running people-powered campaigns. At the moment though, nearly all the campaign activities that are allowed require money, not people. Letterboxing is banned, so the only way to get letters and materials to peoples homes is through direct mail via Australia Post. Campaigners arent allowed to put up posters - so the only way to get them distributed is through paid providers. Doorknocking and street stalls are banned - so paid advertising is one of the only ways to get the word out. So we need to ask you for your help. We hate the fact that money talks in politics, particularly right now. And we know most of our supporters arent rich, and many are struggling as a result of the economic crisis. But we also know that our supporters are among the most generous and self-sacrificing people in our society, and the most determined to put themselves out to fight for a better world. At every level, our party is made up of people who want to fight for the greater good. Our candidates arent, like so many from other parties, self serving careerists looking for a comfortable life on the government benches - they are rank and file activists who want to fight to upend the cushy club that is the political class. So we are asking you to give what you can to this campaign, to help provide an alternative voice to the established parties and start to inject a genuinely radical and transformative voice into Victorian politics. We have already been so heartened to receive donations big and small to this campaign. Some have come from young people who have looked at the last years of Trump and climate catastrophe, and now economic crisis and pandemic, and concluded the world needs to radically change course, and committed themselves to be involved in that fight. We have also received donations and support from veterans of the struggle - people who fought against the Vietnam War and marched in the streets against the Kerr Coup in the 1970s, and are still as convinced as ever of the need for a socialist alternative. We want to thank everyone who has donated so far - your support makes this campaign possible. And to anyone who can find some money, whatever amount, to chip in now - thank you! Together we can win a better world. http://www.victoriansocialists.org.au/donate_2020
03.01.2022 Australia might be a rich country, but it is one with deep, and widening, class divides. In the same way, Melbourne is not one city, but two the Melbourne of the rich, and the Melbourne of the rest of us. The major parties on our Council are in the pocket of developers and big business, and more interested in their own power and privilege than fixing this outrageous inequality. We want to build a movement to fight for a decent society where no one has to languish in poverty.... "The average wealth of the top 20 per cent sits at roughly $3.2 million 90 times that of the lowest 20 per cent, who sit on roughly $36,000 in assets and savings." ACOSS chief executive Cassandra Goldie said the findings of the report should shock people. "It is extraordinary that while overall we're a very wealthy country here in Australia, we've had so many children struggling to be fed properly," she said. "We've had single parents who have been hiding from their children [that] they're not eating to ensure their children do get fed. "We've had people sitting with the lights off and not heating their houses, not able to afford the basics because their levels of income, and so little wealth, has meant that they are deeply distressed about their financial security."
03.01.2022 Solidarity with the Djab Wurrung people who have fought hard for many many months to defend their sacred birthing trees. Shame on the State government, VicRoads... and VicPol for felling the majestic and hugely culturally significant Directions Tree yesterday, for arresting cultural defenders, and for threatening at this very moment to cut down the Grandmother and Grandfather trees. It's not just Rio Tinto who commit acts of cultural genocide in 2020. It's the "progressive" Vic State Labor government who destroy sacred sites as well. 02.01.2022 Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener are historical heroes, whose story and struggle is inseparable to the past and present of Melbourne. They were abducted from Tasmania and brought to Victoria where they were forced to assist their abductor investigate frontier wars. Soon after visiting sites where white people had killed hundreds of Aboriginal people, they joined a group of three women, Truganini, Planobeena and Pyterruner, and waged a six week guerrilla war against the occ...upiers. They were eventually captured and the men were sentenced to death by hanging - the first people to be hanged in the district. They were buried at the Old Melbourne Cemetery, which once stood at the current location of the Queen Victoria Market. There was a section set aside for Aboriginal people, which was unconsecrated, and created three days before the execution of Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener. There were around 9000 people buried at this cemetery and only about 950 bodies were exhumed and reburied at other cemeteries when Queen Victoria Market was created. It is unclear whether the remains of these heroes were reburied or are still at the original cemetery. It has been announced that with the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal Program, the carpark, which covers much of the cemetery site will be changed into a public open space and interpretive elements will recognise the site's significance. The burial place of these two heroes should not be open to interpretation. Victorian Socialists will work with Indigenous communities to appropriately recognise the final resting place of the heroes Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheener.

01.01.2022 Victorian Socialists Lord Mayoral candidate Kath Larkin has slammed Melbourne city councillors for their failure to put the interests of city workers and residents above big business. Larkin says constituents are struggling to be heard by a council thats hopelessly compromised by donations from developers and the top end of town. Over the last three terms, proceedings at the City of Melbourne have descended into farce, with councillors repeatedly withdrawing from the chambe...Continue reading
