21.01.2022 We must remember that horses are flight or fight animals. Allowing them to run in a heightened state on the lunge will only increase the adrenaline, and the situation will get worse. Lunging is an excellent opportunity with nervous horses to teach them relaxation aids and slow/stop aids that you can use when your horse panics.

05.01.2022 I spent five years training my off the track Thoroughbred to not bolt when he was frightened. I tried many different methods that mostly resulted in punishing my horse for his natural fear behaviour. Spoiler alert: it never worked! What did work was patience, empathy and kindness. It’s a pretty terrifying thing having to wait for your bolting horse to slow down a little so you can praise him! But thanks to correctly timed praise, Iggy’s multi-arena lap panic gallops are a thing of the past.
