24.01.2022 I've been embedded in theatre since my earliest years, and love how it can engage both mind and body, and can be such a socially connecting and emotionally nourishing experience. It is so reliant on the relationship between performer and audience, which makes it very similar to the therapist - patient relationship. That's why it's so interesting to see how some theatres, especially those who are usually reliant on touch to convey stories and meaning, are now exploring new wa...ys of delivering sensory experiences. 22.01.2022 So many older Australians haven't been game, or allowed, to venture out as much as they usually might since the prospect of catching COVID-19 became so scary for them. Unfortunately this has meant that a lot of them have lost their usual opportunities to practice keeping physically strong and balanced - The very real consequence of this is possibly having a fall that can be as life-threatening as COVID-19! I've been working with a couple of lovely older people recently who ha...d falls during this period that required hospitalisation. I've been helping them to regain their mobility and confidence, and hopefully rebuilding them to be even a little better than before. 10.01.2022 On Thursdays I work at a Metabolic Rehabilitation Clinic in Sydney's south-west which focuses on improving people's management of their diabetes and liver conditions, so that they can lose weight and become healthier. So I'm particularly interested in how COVID-19 might impact my patients or affect the numbers of newly diagnosed cases of diabetes. This article give the opinion that the outlook is not great; Those with diabetes are likely to be less resistant to COVID-19, e...specially if they have other chronic health conditions, which is common in those with diabetes. And getting COVID-19 can predispose the body to getting diabetes. Control of diabetes is also going to be harder to manage because people are likely to be having less regular contact with their doctors to catch any problems early. And I'd also suggest that people are being less physically active than they usually were, as a result of staying at home more. We all (should) know that physical activity is crucial for stable management, and even improvement and cure, of diabetes. So I'd encourage anyone with diabetes, or any chronic condition, to keep in regular contact with your doctor, even if it is by phone or video; make sure you check and record your blood glucose levels regularly; and keep up a daily habit of at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. https://www.theleader.com.au//coronavirus-may-trigger-di/
09.01.2022 Check out the tips in this postcard by Lou Endicott - Illustrator to keep yourself in good condition over the coming days, weeks or months of self-isolation or working from home. Exercise of course is one of the key tips. So, as Lou suggests, keep up a daily routine, perhaps walk outside (or even inside?), or move (dance?) to an online video. Every day move enough to moderately raise your heart rate and breathing for at least 10 minutes at a time (aiming for a total of 150...-300 minutes of moderate activity / week), and every second day, do some weighted or resisted activities to keep your muscles in good condition. https://www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/factsheet_adults// Also stretch, and get some fresh air and sunlight, whenever you can. 06.01.2022 Considering the current COVID-19 crisis, I am limiting my face-to-face consultations, such that I am only visiting those people who have acute physical issues that require immediate hands-on remediation to manage pain or prevent significant deterioration in their health and symptoms. I am applying screening, hygiene, protective equipment, and distancing precautions as much as possible to prevent any unintended transmission.
