21.01.2022 HEAVY WORK ACTIVITIES: . So.....what are they? These are activities that involve pushing, pulling, lifting or carrying. . And....why should I do them? They are a great tool for helping keep us regulated / ‘just right’ or green zone. If we are yellow zone or fast speed they help to slow us down. If we are in slow speed or blue zone they help to speed us up. Because they work both ways they are great to try when dysregulated. ... . Building these activities into our routine is ideal, such as ‘delivering’ (carrying) items to school office or library, being whiteboard monitor or carrying a backpack. At home it might look like digging in the garden, pushing someone on a swing, vacuuming, carrying a laundry basket of wet washing or pulling a sibling in a wagon. . Make sure you build in some ‘heavy work’ activities throughout the day, especially during our current lockdown. . What other heavy work activity ideas do you have? See more

21.01.2022 HAPPY HUMP DAY! . Half way through the week . My boys started back to ‘real school’ this week -tiring getting back into the swing of our old routines isn’t it. I hope those with kids back at school have managed to make some ‘me’ time. And those still awaiting return to school...hang in there! We all deserve a medal for coping with such upheaval this year. ... . Even the teddies are enjoying some ‘me time’ on the couch while the kids are at school See more

17.01.2022 PARK FUN: . Hopefully you are able to get out and about and explore some local parks these school holidays. . Kids can often become very comfortable and proficient in accessing their local playground. Try and mix things up by trying a different playground with different types of equipment to challenge their planning and motor skills. ... . And what about slides- I’m a big fan of allowing kids to climb ‘up’ the slides. Great for upper body strength development. Obviously teach kids to be aware of others at the park, allowing turn taking, and being mindful of who is going up or coming down to avoid collisions. What are you thoughts on this? . See more

17.01.2022 SENSORY BUCKET: . How full did your sensory bucket get today? . We use the analogy of a sensory bucket to teach kids about their daily capacity (bucket) to cope with sensory triggers. If our bucket gets too full it overflows. To make more room in our bucket we need to use our sensory tools which might include movement breaks, mouth tools, listening to music, fidget tools or moving to a quiet space. ... . Today a client and I graphed what a typical school day looked like for her, showing how full her bucket felt at different times. This helps us visually see when might be good times to use sensory tools, and is a great tool to share with teachers working with her to help understand sensory needs. . See more

13.01.2022 OT WEEK - Katie Stokes OT: . Over the next few days we will be sharing a bit about each member of our OT Team. Here's a bit about Katie: . I love being an OT because:... I enjoy helping families on their therapy journey to understand their child’s needs and teach them tips on how to make day to day life easier. I also love sharing my knowledge with teachers and schools working with our clients. . 5 Fun Facts about Katie: . 1. Why did you choose to become an OT? 10.01.2022 SCREEN TIME and BRAINS: . This article paints a very familiar picture for many families. A great explanation of the effects of screen time on our brains. . Unfortunately I think our extra weeks spent at home in ISO, plus trying to manage remote learning while we are also working from home, have made the challenges of screen time even harder. ... . 03.01.2022 RAINY DAY ACTIVITY IDEAS to develop pencil grasp: . Did you know that to develop a good pencil grasp, a range of fine motor activities and experiences should be used. It’s not all about paper and pencils. . Developing the ‘skill fingers’ of thumb, index and third fingers can be done using a variety of fun games including travel size games with small pieces, threading beads onto pipe cleaners, rolling pea size balls with play dough, placing coins into a money box, and paintin...g with cotton buds. . Another idea are these HAMA beads (pictured below). They are placed onto a template and are so small they require a pincer grasp to pick them up. Then you iron over them to make cool creations. You can also get larger bead sizes for younger kids. Maybe another idea for the birthday and Christmas lists.... . (Obviously supervise young children with this task due to small pieces, and adults need to do the ironing) See more
