Too Much Jargon Especially important to avoid if youre aiming to pivot into a new industry Jargon is considered any language you would use in your current company or industry that would not resonate with the next company or industry youre looking to join. You know you have the experience for the roles youre seeking next, so you need to explain your experience the way the next company talks about those same things. The Wrong Results No matter how many results you include in your resume, if they arent focused on communicating that you can do what the next role needs you to do, your results do no matter. Would your resume pass the Skim Test? The Test is to ensure that if anyone was to read any bullet on their resume theyd be compelled to read further. Recruiters and hiring managers only spend an average of 7-10 seconds reading a resume. The last thing you want is to have a results-oriented resume with the wrong results. Overwhelming Format Most job candidates spend way too much time worrying about the format of their resume. Should it be one-page or two-pages? Should I use this font or another font? Should I include the month and year or just the year? While some of those things are important, your format is not the most important part of your resume. A beautiful but boring and irrelevant resume will not get you very far in the hiring process. When formatting your resume, your goal should be to keep things simple, clear and concise. Remember, anything that distracts from your value and experience increases the chances of your resume getting thrown in the rejection pile. 17.01.2022 Resume Tips Make yourself known. Include your contact details in your resume and cover letter and make sure they are correct and updated. This is a very common mistake employees make, which is not checking over the details for accuracy.... 2 ) Make sure its easy on the eye. A resume thats easy to look at is one thats easy to read and hard to dismiss, so ensuring your resume is visually appealing and easy to scan can only help your job search. I recommend size 10 - 12 on a white background for high contrast, especially when an employer is reading their 50th resume that day. A simple template with a touch of colour is usually what I go for. In some industries ( creative professions for example) a cleverly designed resume is beneficial, but in most cases employers dont want to see pictures and graphics. 3 ) Make sure it reads well. It doesnt matter how good it looks if your resume doesnt read well. Make sure you use sub-headings so potential employers can find the information theyre looking for quickly and use bullet points to note that important information. Try to keep your sentences short and sweet and cut out any unnecessary working. Every word should earn its place. 4 ) Make it match the job. When employers read your resume, theyre looking to see how you meet the advertised role and what value your can bring to their organisation. Try to incorporate the words that they use in their job description in your resume. Some organisations will run resumes through an Applicant Tracking System, which is on the lookout for specific keywords. If they have mentioned a skill or requirements, use those terms to describe your own professional experience.

In a competitive market it is the small things that can separate you from your competition, and correctly addressing your cover letter could be that defining factor. The problem with that is that often the name of the hiring manager is not listed in the job advert. So how can you find the name? Here are my top tips:... 1. Do you know someone who works there? If so, get in touch and ask them if they are able to find out who the person is that you need to talk to. 2. Call reception and explain you would like to address your application to the hiring manager. They should be able to help you. However, some companies may have a no-name policy, so this wont work for all places. 3. Do your research on LinkedIn. If the advert lists the job title of the person the role reports to, or youve spoken to reception and they have told you the job title of the person who is responsible for hiring then use this as your starting point. It expands your professional network significantly and creates more work opportunities by allowing you to join different groups that you are interested in and therefore build connections with people youd like to engage with on a professional level. 5. 14.01.2022 "Should I include references on my resume?" I have had several people ask me this recently and the answer is.. its your call. Be mindful and ensure you have read the job ad, position description and application instructions thoroughly as some companies specifically ask for them to be included. However, if they are not specifically requested it is ok to state References upon request.... Here are a few more tips: 1. If you do include reference details, be sure to include the persons position, title, company name and phone number. This person should be a supervisor, manager or senior team member. 2. If you dont include reference details, make sure you have them prepared and ready to go. Print them out and take them to the interview with you. If all goes well, you dont want this to be holding up the process of you getting a job offer. 3. Even if you have a great relationship with your referee, give them the heads up that they may/will be getting a call. There is nothing worse than getting caught off guard with this and the last thing you want is for this to tarnish your image.
