24.01.2022 A fantastic and simple initiative to implement that can have a huge benefit to wellbeing and learning outcomes. Let’s hope more schools start implementing similar initiatives. #playmore

23.01.2022 A great visual reminder of the things that we should increase, and what we should decrease, to help support our children.

21.01.2022 Happy New Year! Looking forward to working with more amazing children and families this year

21.01.2022 Last week, I brought in my beautiful hand carved Djembe which I used for our Drumbeat session....this was very popular with the group! It was only our second week into the program and I am already seeing an engaged group of young people that are consciously showing great self control and making great choices during our session. Our discussion topic for the week was Relationships and we explored different relationships that we have at home with family and friend and at schoo...l. Students were able to identify key people in their lives, and what makes that positive relationship meaningful to them. Here are some of the important ingredients of a positive relationship that the group came up with; Care, Love, Understanding, Kindness, and Good Communication. We explored this with a drumming activity - Drum as I Move. Each group member taking it in turn to move in the centre of our drumming circle. As a group, the rest of us connected with the "dancer" to play on our drums our representation of how the dancer moved. We also put together the 3 parts of the Listening song and, at the end of the session everyone got to have a turn on my drum to do their own call for the group to respond to...which they LOVED! 20.01.2022 Andrew Fuller - clinical psychologist and Generation Next speaker, describes resilience as the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of ...life to rise above adversity and obstacles. The number one strategy is about making connections - our relationships with others are a great source of support in challenging times, and by developing healthy relationships we must practice compassion, respect and empathy. #Relationships #Resilience See more

19.01.2022 Parent: So how was your day? Child: ok Parent: What did you do today? Child: Nothing much.... Sound familiar? Here are some other suggested questions to try. Good luck

16.01.2022 Get your grit on

15.01.2022 What a win on the weekend by a great team! Mindfulness being an important part of their preparation for such a big high pressure game. Not only the final score, but also their composure throughout the game, evidence of this skilled practice by the club. Practising Mindfulness - the art of being grounded, focused and present, on a daily basis can help us to cope when things get stressful or hectic, and can help us to be able to support others like our children when they can't cope. Have a great day

12.01.2022 Ahh there is so much gain for our children from unstructured play. More of it I say #playmore

09.01.2022 Here’s a great visual for all those that have heard me refer to what happens when our children (or even us) flip their lid. We first work towards restoring regulation through our relationships before we can reason and make sense of what caused us to flip our lid in the first place. I love a good visual

09.01.2022 Yesterday we started a Drumbeat group with upper primary students at Karama Primary School. The students each came up with their own group guideline that they wrote on butchers paper along with their names, taking ownership of the group and their actions. As a group we will review our guidelines over the next few weeks. After some warm up rumbles we paid attention to our heartbeats finding our pulse and tapping our foot to the beat. We then transferred this beat to our drum ...and we were soon all playing our bass note in a rhythm. We discussed other rhythms in our home and school lives, and how we can manage our own personal rhythm to cope during different situations and having safety in our bass or heartbeat rhythm. We had a little bit of time to have a quick look at the listening song before finishing up with a quick game. Looking forward to next week Drumbeat crew See more

09.01.2022 We don't always get it right.....and that's ok because we know getting it right at least 30% of the time is good enough. Don't beat yourself up over the little things, use challenges as learning experiences, and most importantly take time out for yourself. Fill your tank first so you have the ability to help fill other tanks #selfcare #startwithself #goodenough

08.01.2022 Through relationships we grow

08.01.2022 Last week I facilitated a student leadership development day for year 5 students at Holy Family Catholic Primary School as they begin their preparation as school leaders. We looked at what strengths we have, and how we can use these strengths to help us lead and support others. A lot of fun was also had with a range of team building games throughout the day. It was inspiring to hear from Darwin’s Bishop Charles, and local member for Karama Ngaree Ah Kit talk about their journeys as leaders. Looking forward to working with this group next year as year 6 students. Keep up the great work

08.01.2022 We know that children need many things, but here is a good list to start with...

08.01.2022 A significant adult can help a child with anxiety by providing a connection, and supporting grounding, and breathing to calm. Here is some info on how, as well as some other great tips.

07.01.2022 This is a great visual reminder for us as adults to aware of how we respond to the children we support. Self care and awareness practices such as mindfulness assist us to stay in our calm and to remain present and able to support through these difficult times #traumasupport #selfcare #mindfulness #relationship

06.01.2022 Supporting the growth of new neural pathways one beat at a time School is back next week, looking forward to facilitating my drumming groups with the kids!

03.01.2022 Spending the morning mindfully putting the finishing touches on a info session for teachers. Gratitude is the perfect way to start and finish everyday #gratitude #startthedayright #endthedaybetter #joy #happiness #itsthesmallthings #makeitcount

01.01.2022 I have really embraced this idea for a couple of years now choosing to slow down and enjoy experiences with loved ones rather than wasting money on stuff! We’ve ramped it up this year already enjoying an animal encounter with family and friends as a birthday gift, and a week away with no wifi or TV just great friends, good vibes, good food, fine wine, and lots of laughter. And there’s more goodness planned for later in the year Enjoy the good times with the ones you love
