24.01.2022 11.11.2020 - REMEMBRANCE DAY On this day in 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died.... As we continue our gradual easing of restrictions, Remembrance Day and the Poppy Appeal will look different this year. RSL Victoria volunteers will not be out and about in the city streets selling poppy badges as usual. But it’s important to continue the tradition of the poppy in memory of all those who have served. Victorians can safely honour and support veterans and their families by visiting the online Poppy Appeal website at https://www.poppyappeal.com.au/ For more information about Remembrance Day and 75th Anniversary of WWII activities and exhibitions, visit: vic.gov.au/world-war-2-75th-anniversary I take this opportunity to also thank all our current serving service men and women for protecting our country and remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms. Lest we forget. #KaushaliyaMP

22.01.2022 MEMBERS STATEMENT HAPPY GURPURAB It was a great opportunity to speak about Gurpurab in the Parliament last week. 30th November 2020 marks the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. His birth celebrated worldwide as Gurpurab, is one of the most sacred days for the Sikh community. Guru Nanak Dev ji - the first of the ten Sikh Gurus, was the founder of the religion of Sikhism. He dedicated himself to the service of humanity. His teachings can be found in the sacred Sikh... scripture ‘Guru Granth Sahib’. The success of the Sikh community is derived from the humble teachings of the great Guru Nanak Dev Ji. As a social reformer, he supported and upheld causes for women, poor people, distressed, and oppressed. One of his famous preaching on female gender equality says: So Kyon Manda Aakhiye Jit Jamme Rajan: which means Why to call ‘her’ inferior? From 'her', the Kings are born." I am proud to be from the land, where once great man like Guru Nanak Dev Ji walked. I am also very proud to recognise the Australian Indian Sikh community, particularly the Victorian people of Sikh faith, with whom I have a very close friendship. The Western Metropolitan Region is home to many Sikhs and several Gurudwaras. People of Sikh faith have made significant positive contributions to the Victorian and Australian culture. And it is important to recognise that. The Sikh community is known for their generosity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sikh organisations stepped up selflessly, to help the community through the difficult period in Victoria. I would like to take this opportunity to wish every Sikh, a very happy Gurpurab. Guru Nanak Dev Ji de Gurpurab di lakh lakh vadhai. #KaushaliyaMP

07.01.2022 I am absolutely delighted to let you know that todays State Andrews Labor Government Budget will contain $3.2 million to upgrade Diggers Rest Primary School! ...This year, Diggers Rest families, like so many across our community have done an incredible job in supporting students to learn from home. As kids get back into the classroom, we want to make sure they have the fantastic new learning spaces they deserve. This $3.2 million investment will be used to upgrade and modernise the school, including the Administration Block. Diggers Rest Primary School has one of the fastest growing enrolments in the area and are again expecting a large number of new students begin Prep in 2021. This investment builds on the $1.18 billion as part of the Building Works Package announced earlier this year, which is creating space for more than 21,000 extra students in Victoria’s education system and creating around 1,600 local construction jobs. Across Victoria, the Labor Government is delivering 1,460 school upgrades investing in new classrooms, fixing old buildings and delivering the learning spaces our kids deserve. This is an investment in our kids and their future. Because every child, no matter where they go to school, deserves access to state-of-the-art facilities. Not only will this make sure our kids are getting a great education it’ll create new local jobs. For some time I have been working closely with the school leadership, students, parents and friends of the school to listen to what was most needed and help deliver this outcome- I am delighted we got there. I would particularly like to acknowledge the work of Acting Principal Sheridan Thomas, former Principal Rachelle Hedger, Acting Assistant Principal Shaun Sims, as well as the hard working Diggers Rest School Council who have worked collaboratively with me to secure this great outcome. Congratulations and well done!
