17.01.2022 From Emiko Kudojo, Choga Nyima In the mid 16th century, the first Kanjuro Shibata (a.k.a. Munekazu Shibata) lived on the island of Tanegashima just south of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. Munekazu was the master bowmaker for the powerful Shimazu samurai clan. Somewhere between 1553 and 1574, Munekazu moved to Japan's then capital city o...f Kyoto where he then made bows primarily for the Tokugawa shogunate clan. The SHOGUN conferred the title, ONYUMISHI (royal bow manufacturer and archer) upon Munekazu. Since that time, the Shibata family has maintained an unbroken lineage as master archers and bow makers for the SHOGUNATE and DAIMYO families of Japan. Each generation of Shibata Bowmakers has taken the name of Kanjuro and holds the title ONYUMISHI. In addition to making bows for warriors and nobility, the Shibata family also made HAMA-YUMI or "sacred bows" used in Shinto and Buddhist rituals. Duties include making 59 ceremonial bows called 'YUMI' every twenty years for the ISE Shrine (pronouned 'ee'-'say'), the highest Shinto shrine in Japan dedicated to Shinto goddess Amaterasu Omikami and located in the city of ISE in MIE prefecture of Japan. This duty is now the responsibility Kanjuro Shibata XXI and was most recently fulfilled in 2012. Many of the Shibata have also been master archers of the BISHU CHIKURIN HA branch of the HEKI RYU School of KYUDO, which is the style of KYUDO still practiced at the ZENKO KYUDOJO in Boulder, Colorado, Barnet,Vermont. San Francisco, Ca. and Austin, Tx. Santa Fe,N.M. Chicago, IL.

14.01.2022 Ho sha, or offering shooting has been manifest within the Shibata family lineage of Heki Ryu Byu Shu Chikurin Ha.This involves the foundation of Hito Tei evolving into Rei sha or manner shooting, as an expression of Rei Ho Chusetsu , Mannerly offering of Loyalty or devotion. Historically the Ogaswara Ryu school has for hundreds of years also taught this way and their continuity over 800 years serves as a reference point for Japan in it's entirety.. As such they are an excellent source for understanding the form , kokoro and space created by such Ho Sha mannerly kyudo practice,as well as significant elucidation of the enlightened warrior tradition of Shambhala itself, in the lineage of ancestral sovereign Shotoku Taishi: ( Two videos) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16mQJKWgYn4

13.01.2022 Shibata XX, Sendai teaches about Meditation Kyudo. That is the practice of Shichido ( The Seven Coordinations in the beginning)while holding the mind in Shamatha . The medium of the practice becomes the form itself, while at times the medium is the breath. This video does a very good job in communicating the contemplative aspect of the Shibata lineage of Kyudo.Much of this now continues under Shibata Kanjuro XXI , Sensei. , Sensei teaches by invoking mind and heart with the yumi itself, putting his essence into every yumi he makes,, beyond concept or prevarication. Because of this , Sensei's yumis are very precious.

09.01.2022 Usually Spring brings a new kyudo season, but we must practice alone now, and so my thoughts turn to my root Kyudo Master, Shibata Kanjuro xx, Sendai, whose ext...raordinary discipline and kindness echos throughout the phenomenal world even though he is no longer with us. He was truly an arrow from ancient times : See more

06.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjJKT1ZkKfE Shibata Kanjuro XXI , , demonstrates creating a yumi ( bow) in his Kyoto workshop. Sensei is the root teacher of many practice groups around the world, and he is the exclusiive Sensei in our dojo, Kawako Kyudojo of New Brunswick, Canada. ( Find immediately below two other interviews in this series. Sensei is an expert in not only creating the form of the yumi, but also expert at infusing each yumi he makes with the blessing energy of his ancient lineage, making his yumi very special implements of practice.Understandably, they are much in demand. 04.01.2022 Purity of perception (Shashin), purity of form( Shakei), and pure space( Shahin), Suzuki Hiroyuki Sensei Born in 1901, died in 1984, age 83, with kasue and yatori, Reisha or Sharei of the Renmae school of ANKF This was filmed at the Kyudo Venue of the Imperial Palace located in Tokyo Japan, the same place where Shibata XIX Masamuni presented his legendary Reisha just after World War II. In Shibata XIX's case, he offered reisha to prove to Japan's Imperial representatives tha...t the Way of the Warrior was not at an end. He vowed to commit sepeku if he did not put two arrows within a small gold foil target about 3 inches in diameter. The first arrow was dead center, the second clipped the edge of the tube and went into the foil. His life survived by a hairs breadth and so he was able to continued the lineage by handing it to his grand son, Shibata Kanjuro XX, Sendai, the ancient way of Heki Ryu Biu Shyu Chikurin Ha. And so the lineage came down to us and thankfully is now skillfully continued by Shibabat XXI, Sensei. Seeing the Imperial Kyudo Venue in this Suzuki Sensei video inspired me to relate this Shibata story, The video should be watched as many times as one can, just to observe the grounds and the manners of the kasue ( assistant, also called. kaishaku in the old days) and the manners of the yatori ( arrow retriever).
