25.01.2022 Today is National Wattle Day! As well as being our national floral emblem, wattle is a symbol of unity and resilience. That makes it a particularly appropriate ...flower to feature on the RSL’s badge, which our members have proudly worn since 1916! You might not have noticed, but the RSL shield features five floral symbols. As well as a sprig of wattle, it depicts a leek, a rose, a shamrock and a thistle the floral emblems of the four countries of the United Kingdom. In fact, every element of the RSL shield has meaning from the colours it uses to the figures marching shoulder to shoulder.

24.01.2022 After what can only be described as a challenging day where I saw the best and worst in people with veterans welfare, I would like to acknowledge RSL Queensland and the Military Brotherhood MMC Cooloola-Sunshine Coast for their dedication and amazing support in getting a homeless veteran off the street and into accomodation, on a Friday afternoon. Moose, you and your team are a great support to veterans everywhere and your tireless work doesn’t go unnoticed. Have a great w...eekend everyone and stay safe. DP.
24.01.2022 We love our welfare team jobs, especially fish and chip Fridays. It's great to take our seniors out for lunch and for them to be able to enjoy our amazing Sunny Coast weather and fabulous location. The fish n chips are pretty good as well.
21.01.2022 We had an absolute ripper of a lunch at the Kawana Surf Club for our annual reunion lunch. Although we had reduced numbers and couldn’t invite members from the other sub branches, it was very well attended by our sub branch family. Thanks to Andrew Wallace - LNP Federal Member for Fisher and Jarrod Bleijie State Member for Kawana for your speeches; also Councillor Joe Natoli District 4 Sunshine Coast Council, Ian Hall President Sunshine Coast and Regional District RSL and... Mr Tony Ferris, President of RSL Queensland for your attendance. It was great for us to be able to congratulate MR Kevin ‘Woody’ Hurman OAM on the presentation of his well awarded medal. To all the other sub branches, we look forward to catching up with you all once this madness is over. Shoulder to Shoulder. Always.
20.01.2022 Alexandra Headland provides a beautiful location for these two Memorials. One is a Memorial to our veterans who fought in Korea. The other is a Memorial to our War Dogs. With a backdrop of the Pacific Ocean it is a wonderful spot for Remembrance. To find the location, drive to the HMAS Brisbane memorial atop Alexandra Headland and walk a short distance down the grass slope toward the sea.
20.01.2022 Ladies and gents. Anyone looking for a new car, check out this incentive from Mitsubishi Motors.

19.01.2022 #OTD We Remember Dame Maud McCarthy, GBE, RRC and Bar Today we pause to remember the life and service of Dame Emma Maud McCarthy, GBE, RRC and Bar, who was bo...rn on the 22nd of September 1859. She would serve in the army as a nursing sister, eventually rising to become the army matron-in-chief during WWI. Dame Emma Maud McCarthy (1859-1949), was born on 22 September 1859 at Paddington, Sydney. In 1891 she was in England and studied general nursing training at London Hospital, Whitechapel as a probationer. Hospital records state that 'she had an exceptionally nice disposition' and was 'most ladylike and interested in her work' though 'she found it hard to control others, or to take firm action when necessary'. She was promoted sister in January 1894. Maud McCarthy was sister-in-charge of Sophia women's ward at the outbreak of the South African War and was one of the six sisters selected from London Hospital by Princess Alexandra to go to South Africa as her own 'military' nursing sisters. Resigning from the hospital on 25 December 1899, McCarthy served with distinction throughout 1899-1902 with the Army Nursing Service Reserve, receiving the Queen's and the King's Medal and the Royal Red Cross. Returning to England in July 1902, she was awarded a special decoration by Queen Alexandra. She then became involved in the formation of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service, was promoted matron within the service in February 1903 and during the next seven years was successively matron of Aldershot, Netley and Millbank military hospitals. In 1910 she was appointed principal matron at the War Office, a position she held until the outbreak of World War I. Matron McCarthy sailed in the first ship to leave England with members of the British Expeditionary Force, arriving in France on 12 August 1914. In 1915 she was installed at Abbeville as matron-in-chief of the B.E.F. in France and Flanders, taking charge of the whole area from the Channel to the Mediterranean, wherever British and allied nurses worked; she was directly responsible to General Headquarters. In August 1914 the number of nurses in her charge were 516; by the time of the Armistice they were over 6000. She was responsible for the nursing of hundreds of thousands of casualties in the years 1914-18. An indefatigable leader and administrator, she visited field units, casualty clearing stations, hospital trains, hospital ships and stationary and general hospitals. The constant shortage of trained nurses, continual postings of staff, and personnel requirements of individuals were handled with tact and skill. She was the only head of a department in the B.E.F. who remained in her original post throughout the war, although she was off duty with appendicitis in March-August 1917. She was recognised for her service following the war and was appointed G.B.E. in 1918, received a Bar to her Royal Red Cross and was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal, the Belgian Medaille de la Reine Elizabeth, and the French Légion d'honneur and Medaille des Epidémies. When she left France on 5 August 1919, representatives from the French government and the medical services saw her off. The meticulous records kept since her arrival in France were taken to England with her. Describing the matron-in-chief during the war, one general said: 'She's perfectly splendid, she's wonderful she's a soldier! If she was made Quartermaster-General, she'd work it, she'd run the whole Army, and she'd never get flustered, never make a mistake. The woman's a genius'. A contributor to the Sydney Morning Herald in 1914 referred to her as a 'slight, delicately-organised woman' with 'an absolutely wonderful gift for concentrated work, and a power of organisation that has made her invaluable in army hospital work'. After the war, McCarthy worked as matron-in-chief, Territorial Army Nursing Service, from 1920 until her retirement in 1925. Dame Maud McCarthy died at her home at Chelsea, London, on 1 April 1949. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 18.01.2022 Today we honour all the men and women who served in the Vietnam War. This country owes you a debt that can never be fully repaid. We thank you for your service and your ongoing comradeship and what you passed on to the next generation of ANZAC. ... Never forgotten.
18.01.2022 A big thank you and expression of our appreciation to the Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Supporters Club for the absolutely amazing lunch they provided for our Sub Branch Reunion yesterday. The menu of lamb shanks, barramundi, butterscotch pudding and pavlova with fruit salad was fabulous - easily the best in taste and presentation. The usual exceptional standard of service was on display and again their welcoming hospitality made us feel like family. Totally recommended as a venue for any occasion. Thank you to Jen and the team.

16.01.2022 Two of our Vietnam Veterans were recently invited by Kawana Waters State College to address Year 12 students on their experiences while serving in Vietnam. Maureen Javes served in Vietnam at Vung Tau as a Nursing Sister with the New Zealand Army. Maureen cared for casualties from Tet, and battles of Coral and Balmoral. Tony Creswick-Jackson was a national service infantryman and served with 6RAR and 9RAR. The students provided many thoughtful questions following the presentation. The senior humanities teacher, Ms Jasmine Burow, was very impressed with the presentation and has invited Kawana Waters RSL Sub Branch to work closely with the School's Humanities Department for future presentations.

15.01.2022 The veteran community will be pleased with the appointment of Gwen Cherne as our first national Veteran Family Advocate. Gwen has a unique understanding of the ...stresses which are often faced by family members of our serving personnel and sadly lost her husband, Peter, to suicide in 2017. She’s determined to help me stop other families suffering a similar loss. I’ve worked closely with Gwen in her various roles where she has demonstrated her passion and determination to support our veterans and their families, particularly anyone dealing with mental health issues. Gwen will make a tremendous advocate and I look forward to delivering further positive reforms in the future. If you, or someone you know, would benefit from free mental health conunselling for veterans and their families, please contact Open Arms on 1800 011 046.

15.01.2022 Today is Battle for Australia Day, when we commemorate the campaigns fought for Australia’s defence in the Coral Sea, Papua and New Guinea including along the f...amous Kokoda Track. Last year I visited PNG as Chair of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee for Defence. Alongside meeting our troops stationed there today I visited the Kokoda Memorial in Popondetta. The local heritage adviser Andrew Connolly helped me better understand the terrible conditions faced by the soldiers who fought in the area and feeling the heat for myself helped me to understand and appreciate them even more. These were the battles that saved Australia and today it is appropriate that we pay tribute and honour those who served to protect our country. Lest we forget.
13.01.2022 Great day today on the road forming relationships that make us stronger. 12.01.2022 We have just been advised that a local Vietnam Veteran has a a major problem with his house. He lives alone and is a pensioner. His house has been infested with white ants and the ceiling is collapsing. The white ant problem has been addressed and now he is faced with the repairs. We as a Sub Branch are teaming with Sunshine Coast Young Veterans to assist him with the repairs. We are looking for veterans who are tradies to donate some time to do the repairs. We also intend approaching local businesses to donate the materiel required to effect the repairs. We hope to repay those donors with a lot of PR on commercial media. If you are a tradie or know of someone who is, and are prepared to help out a fellow veteran, please contact Gary Penney on 0419829258. Shoulder to shoulder, Always.

08.01.2022 #OTD General Blamey accepts Japanese surrender at Morotai On the 9th of September 1945, General Sir Thomas Blamey, Commander in Chief Allied Land Forces Sout...hwest Pacific Area, accepted the surrender of Lieutenant General Fusataro Teshima, Commander of the 11th Japanese Army at Morotai. This event marked the end of Australian military operations in WWII. Although Japan had formally surrendered in Tokyo Bay on the 2nd of September, individual surrender ceremonies were held throughout the Pacific afterwards. These ceremonies symbolised the surrender of the individual units in each region, and were significant in ensuring that no independent Japanese units would continue fighting. The surrender ceremony at Morotai saw the surrender of the 11th Japanese Army, which at the time comprised of 126,000 Japanese troops, was the second largest surrendering force of Japanese after the 136,000 soldiers from the Bougainville and New Britain area which surrendered on the 6th of September. General Blamey signed the surrender document in front of 10,000 allied troops. In his speech, he said he did not recognise the Japanese as an honourable and gallant foe, recalling the treacherous attacks made by them against China, the British Empire and USA, and the atrocities that had been inflicted upon prisoners of war. The acceptance of the surrender at Morotai saw the disbandment of the final significant Japanese force in the Pacific, effectively ending Australian military operations for WWII. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 05.01.2022 21 years ago today, the first Australians from the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) arrived in Dili to assist with the restoration of peace and sec...urity in the region. What followed was the largest deployment of Australian troops since the Vietnam War, with 5,500 #YourADF personnel contributing to the 22 nation regional force. Today, we say thank you to #OurPeople and their families for their support to the INTERFET mission. We continue to support Timor-Leste and its people, and commemorate the courage, sacrifice and solidarity shown throughout our shared history. #GoodSoldiering

01.01.2022 Ordinary Seamen Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheean did something extraordinary 78 years ago. In the face of a Japanese aerial attack and after being given the order to aband...on ship, Teddy went back to one of the ship's guns, strapped himself in and did what he could do to protect his mates. Teddy was 18 and he died in an act of true heroism during the Second World War that saved the lives of many of his fellow sailors. Today he will receive our highest military honour, the Victoria Cross for Australia. He is the first Royal Australian Navy sailor to be awarded the VC, and by receiving this honour it will ensure his story of mateship, endurance, courage and sacrifice lives on for generations to come. Today, Teddy’s family will see a long campaign come to fruition and it will no doubt be a moment they, and the many people who worked so hard to see Teddy receive this award, will cherish. This is a proud day for our Navy, our Australian Defence Force and the Australian people. BZ Teddy and thank you for your service.
