24.01.2022 Went kayaking today off the beach near the Western Beach Boat Club. Access was muddy due to low tide but still had a good time as you can see from the photos. I have a friend at the Club who tells me that for $30 a year, I can become a social member and use their ramp to launch and retrieve my kayak. I think I will become a member as it is a great spot to kayak amongst the boats, going East and Northish to explore these areas of Geelong by the sea.

23.01.2022 Went for a kayak upstream of the Barwon River from Queens Street Bridge towards Dwights Falls last Sunday and got some really nice photos.

23.01.2022 Went kayaking on the Barwon river from below Queens Bridge up to as far as I can go towards the falls. It was a great day for it with no wind in some sections and a very light breeze in others.

22.01.2022 extreme kayaking or just plain nuts?!??

21.01.2022 Now that's a tight squeeze! : Dane Jackson

19.01.2022 Went kayaking in Clifton Springs last Sunday. Easy access to the water and plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Some houses on foreshore are really nice too.

19.01.2022 I have what i believe is a great Android app suggestion for kayakers. It's called WINDFINDER which comes as a free and a very affordable pro version. For me, i need to consider 2 things when deciding whether to go kayaking or not; air temperature which needs to be above 20 and air speed which needs to be less than 5 m/s (as the waves get a bit high and it can be hard to kayak in such a strong headwind). The app lists that information as a forecast every 3 hours. Additionally,... it shows the weather conditions (sunny, cloudy, rain) and tide times/height. All very useful information. I have set mine up to monitor Point Henry, Leopold, Ocean Grove, Portarlington and Indented Heads. I have been using the free version for more than a year now and have decided to get the pro version which offers a few additional features (such as removal of non-intrusive ads). Let me know what you think of it. See more

18.01.2022 A new kayak launcher has been installed at DeLeon Springs State Park! Keep an eye for an upcoming story by guest writer Jeff Shepherd!

18.01.2022 The weather has not been very favourable for kayaking so far. I did go kayaking a couple of times at Barwon Heads. It was fun but also hard work with the strong currents near the bridge and towards the open sea.

17.01.2022 Went for a kayak on Sunday from the Western Beach Boat Club. What a challenge that was with the wind reaching over 21 knots at times. I kept close to the shore and found it quite dirty. When your kayak is some 20cm above sea level, waves that look 50cm seem quite daunting. I was concerned more than scared. May be I should invest in a sit-on-top kayak as mine is a sit inside one.

17.01.2022 Went kayaking last sunday, at a spot near Clifton Springs: Avila Road which has a nice access to a lovely beach.

16.01.2022 Went kayaking off Point Henry today on a seriously low tide. Won't do that again: hard to get into the water on Eastern side as beach is quite shallow. Western side is better but you need to go way out to get some decent depth.

15.01.2022 I became a member of the Geelong Western Beach Boat Club last saturday, $30. This means that I can now use their ramp to get my kayak into the water around the western side of Geelong. Yeah!!!!!!

14.01.2022 Went kayaking off Point Henry on a low tide but this time i accessed the water from the turnoff before you go past Alcoa. Access to the water was a lot easier but i noticed sewerage with a disturbing yellow colour going into the sea. I kayaked an estimated 500m towards Lime Burner's Point and the water depth was a consistent 1m give or take the whole way. Lots of swans there today. The air was a tad fresh but the lack of wind made it really nice to be out in the water.

14.01.2022 Went kayaking today along the south shore of Geelong today. Great day for it.

13.01.2022 Had another great day kayaking today. Set off from the West Geelong Boat Club and went all the way up to just past Rippleside Park, an estimated 1.5km. The water was seriously clear which was really nice to see. One thing I did notice are groups of around 12 little tiny fishes jumping out of the water once in a while. The photos below are taken around Rippleside Park.

12.01.2022 I took these photos at one of my favourite kayaking spots. Did not go kayaking as my back has been playing up.

12.01.2022 Here are some photos from my kayaking afternoon at Fyansford. Some photos are a bit dark, should have set up my camera better.

12.01.2022 These were taken today off Point Henry. Today there were more pelicans than usual. They are magnificient flyers sometimes gliding just centimeters above the water.

10.01.2022 Young man kayaking and fishing at Portarlington. I managed to take his photo just as he reeled in a fish he just caught.

10.01.2022 Went kayaking to a new spot today and really enjoyed it. The image below shows where I went, 2km as a one way trip. So 4km as a return trip. I could not go the other way towards Fyansford as a weir blocked the way. Getting into the water was easy as there is a ramp there, and found a few fellow kayakers there.

07.01.2022 I went kayaking at my favourite beach down Hermsley Road and into Avila Road. The wind was strongish but being from the South, the water was protected by the 'cliff'. The water was crystal clear and warm. If you go there, make sure to have a trolley for your kayak as it is a bit of a way to the beach from the car park, down a steep hill.

06.01.2022 Kayaking through class 5 whitewater rapids is not for the faint hearted Join Ben Brown, Rafa Ortiz, Rush Sturges and Jared Meehan on part of their epic 35 day expedition spanning both islands of New Zealand.

05.01.2022 I have just gone kayaking on the Murray River, in Western Australia, near Mandurah and took the photos below. I was using my brother's kayak which is a pedal one. Having used one with oars for 2 years, let me say that the pedal one is so much more efficient ie. by not pedalling very hard, you can move at a good speed. I then tried the oars on his kayak and what hard work it was to try and get the same speed.

04.01.2022 I often go to Point Henry for some kayaking. Some advantages are: at low tide you can go some way and still see the bottom, there often are pelicans there and seeing them fly is a site to behold, it's easy to get in and out of the water, usually one side of Point Henry has less wind than the other, it's not a crowded area, and more...

04.01.2022 Lovely Sunday morning boatstour Happy Meowmy’s Day to all of the cat moms out there!

02.01.2022 A little video to explain the pedal kayak.

02.01.2022 How a pedal kayak works: under the water line. Pls excuse the quality of the video but you can still see how the pedal works under water. Thanks to my brother Phil for the 'foot' action while I was filming.

02.01.2022 Went to my club today (I can say that now ;-) ) and had a really good kayak along the foreshore of Geelong. The sea was calm with minimal waves. What a pleasure it was. Met a couple at the club who had a 'boat' for sale, one that a single person can sail. They want $16k for it. If only I had the money ;-)
