24.01.2022 We wish everyone a happy harmony day - March 21st! Today, we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all of us that call Australia home. Please see below Statement from the committee members of KAY Leaders on the recent terror attacks in Christchurch. ... Let's stand united and stand against racism. ------------------------------------ The Executives and Committee Members of the Korean Australian Young Leaders (KAY Leaders) are deeply saddened by the devastating attack that occurred at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 15 March 2019, which resulted in the death of at least 50 people with another 50 people wounded. We stand in solidarity with our Muslim and New Zealander friends during these difficult times. To the families of the victims who have lost their loved ones, we offer our sincerest condolences. To those who were injured, we pray that they find the strength for a speedy and full recovery. An incident such as this is not just an attack on the Muslim community, but also an assault upon the core values that we as a multicultural society espouse so deeply. As a community which advocates diversity and inclusiveness, we are deeply disturbed by the inflammatory remarks of Senator Fraser Anning which followed. Australia is home to people from all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. The spirit of sharing with those who have crossed the seas is embedded in our very anthem and Senator Anning’s remarks could not be more at odds to the values we uphold so proudly as a harmonious multicultural society. We urge our Governments and political leaders to guard against any such actions or comments which seek to spark division and hatred between people of different races, cultures and religions. KAY Leaders will continue to stand united with those who believe in cultural, ethnic, religious, gender and other types of diversity for a more inclusive and harmonious Australia. 11.01.2022 On the 16th of October 2018, we stood witness to an anachronistic motion known as "It's OK to be white" which was put forward by Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson. A motion that only just failed to be passed by the Australian Senate. The phrase "It's OK to be white" has been used by white supremacists as a racist meme for decades. The phrase It's OK to be white has a history of affiliation with white supre...macist groups overseas, including the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis. It is our utmost concern that our politicians, who are entrusted with the responsibility to be the voice of our community, have failed to identify such a racist meme. Although we have been informed that it was a result of an administrative process failure, we, as a community are deeply concerned that no less than 23 Coalition senators (including the Indigenous Affairs Minister) have voted in favour of the motion. We believe it is a reflection of the current status of our Government towards anti-racism. The event that took place in the Australian Senate on the 16th of October, 2018 is beyond disheartening. It is an event that raises concerns not only for the Australians with coloured skin but every single Australian person present in this nation. The members of KAY Leaders are strongly urging our Government to properly reorganise their affairs and priorities and bear focus in strengthening our multicultural nation, to provide us with the confidence that such an event like this will never happen again, never to be repeated in Parliament.
