22.01.2022 Tonight at training the crew were put through their paces with draughting from both our main truck pump and our portable pump. Draughting is a key skill we use as volunteers in the rural fire service as sometimes our water source are not easily accessible like a town hydrant. We can draught from most water sources known as static water sources such as pools, dams, cattle troughs, rivers, ponds and water tanks. The crew were also challenged to start out trucks main pump blind...folded by our senior deputy captain. This gives the crews a realistic feel to what we may face on the fire ground. Are you up for a challenge or interested in joining? Contact our Facebook page. Photos: FF Riley Hollis
22.01.2022 Kayuga Brigade would like to send a huge shout out to the guys at Tefol Muswellbrook who squeezed us in last week to install some new work lights and an LED light bar on our primary appliance Kayuga 7. Late last year the brigade specifically fundraised to Upgrade the scene lighting and driving lights of our truck due to the roads and areas we quite often work in and travel. ( disclaimer: All work carried out with approval from the relevant people)

Where we were shown over the different types of bombers, the different uses for each one and how to load them and were able to have all our aircraft related questions answered. It was a great afternoon out and very informative as generally the only time we see these amazing machines is when they’re flying overhead. A huge shout out to Pays Aviation Chief Pilot Harley for s...howing us around. Pics taken by FF Riley.
13.01.2022 We have had a few questions about the fire 2km North of the village. As this fire is in the Upper Hunter Shire we were not called so the only information we have is what is on the fires near me application. We don’t believe there is any cause for alarm. You can download the Fires Near Me application from the Apple or Android store it is a free app that is excellent for seeing updates from the local area.
13.01.2022 An estimated 95% of households in NSW are connected to a mains water supply. There are approximately 7% of all households with an alternative source of water such as rainwater tank or bore in addition to the mains water supply. An estimated 13% of households have a swimming pool. The Static Water Supply (SWS) program is aimed at identifying properties with a water supply such as dams, creeks or swimming pools, that can be used for firefighting purposes. In the event of a fir...e the SWS sign and your backyard pool or dam could save your home. The NSW Fire Brigades has a program to identify swimming pools and other water sources, particularly in bushfire risk areas. During bushfires, firefighting operations can be limited by a lack of water, due to the overloading of the local water supply or limited water availability. A small I.D. plate with the letters S.W.S. which means Static Water Supply, is placed in a visible location in consultation with the property owner. The backyard swimming pool provides an ideal emergency water supply for firefighters, using small portable pumps and hose lines to protect your home and possessions. Your pool water will only be used as a last resort during major bushfires. The S.W.S. sign is provided FREE. If your house or property has a water source, such as a swimming pool, tank or dam, you can assist firefighters by prominently displaying a SWS plate at your front gate so that it is readily visible from the road. Your inclusion in this program may assist the Fire Brigade to extinguish a fire that may occur in or near your home or a neighbour’s home or property. To be part of the SWS program please contact your local fire station.

11.01.2022 The training Continues! Tonight for training the crew decided to swap the hoses and truck for the classroom. Lead by the Senior Deputy Captain crews learned all about the Urban Interface, Property Protection and fire behaviour and how it’s affected by the weather. We then discussed what interface areas we have in our brigade area and how each one would be affected differently in the event of a Bush or Grassfire. This will all roll into another session in a few weeks where we will travel to the fringes of our area where the grasslands meet the town and Carry out a PIP or Pre Incident Plan. #nswrfs #training #bookworm
11.01.2022 Kayuga Rural Fire Brigade is proud to have been Nominated for the 2020 NSW Volunteer of the year award.
11.01.2022 On this day 90 years ago, our brigade was officially formed. Formation- At a meeting of all locals and the Overton bushfire brigade on the 23rd November 1930 due to large number of people from Kayuga and surrounding areas it was decided to form another brigade. Kayuga Bushfire Brigade was officially formed a month later on 24th of December 1930 at a meeting of locals at the then thriving Kayuga Hall. Under the guidance of the Captain who was a Mr McIntyre (who later ...become the Group Captain for the district). Every property owner had to supply a bit of fire fighting equipment. Any farm over 1500 acres had to supply two good men to the brigade. Under 1000 acres they had to supply 1 man. All hobby farms and village had to supply 1 good man for every 6 houses. After a number of large fires between 1930 til 1960 Captain McIntyre assisted in forming several more brigades around Muswellbrook including Wybong and Spring Creek. Times have certainly changed with modern vehicles, training and technology making the job safer and easier compared to 90 years ago. **If you have any photographs or information about our brigade over the years feel free to send them so we can have a more accurate brigade record they would be appreciated***

06.01.2022 After a few weeks of practice one of our younger members today obtained his Medium Rigid Truck License. 06.01.2022 Back in April you may remember a post about our brigade receiving a demountable Asco Building to use as storage and meetings as we don’t have a fire station. Well here is a bit of an update, On Wednesday power was connected this has been a massive upgrade for the brigade as we were able to purchase some fridges and freezers to keep our drinks cold along with a television and whiteboard to assist with training. A lot of these creature comforts have been made possible thanks t...o our amazing fire control centre staff organising both the demountable and the connection of power. A huge thanks also needs to go to the generosity of the general public as it was with your kind donations we were able to purchase the fridge, freezers and television. This is a terrific mile stone for the brigade as it is the first station we have had since our creation in the December of 1930. See more
06.01.2022 We have been out and about this morning again checking the current conditions and these are some of the photos collected, as we remind people to NEVER drive thr...ough flood waters, it only takes about 15cm of water for your car to be washed away in fast flowing flood waters, and you can’t see the damage done to the integrity of the road either. It’s just not worth the risk! See more
05.01.2022 A reminder that daylight saving will finish overnight Back to getting up and coming home in the dark.
05.01.2022 Appliance Familiarisation Our primary truck (Kayuga 7) is currently away getting some repairs, in the mean time we have on loan a Cat 1 tonight the guys used their training time to become familiar with both the cat 1 and our secondary truck Support 7 Bravo and how to use it to draught out of an open water source. It was the perfect opportunity for our newer members to work off a different truck. ... Thanks to the guys at Smiths Dairy for allowing us to train on their property!
04.01.2022 Tonight for training the brigade focused on relay pumping and basic firefighter skills. The scenario was one truck was actively fighting fire but was too far away from a water source so another truck had to then pump water to the main truck so it could continue pumping water onto the fire. Our Advanced firefighter trainees had to keep an eye on both water coming on and water going out to find that happy medium where everything was just right. Whilst our Basic and Villag...e firefighters practiced nozzle techniques. The scenario made a little more challenging because a hydrant was buried and took a while to find. Once everything was packed up it was pop quiz time. A quick pop quiz from the basic firefighter exam kept everyone on their toes.
02.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
02.01.2022 The brigade has a number of lollies left over from a Christmas event. We are thinking about doing a quick Santa Run around the Kayuga area and visiting some of our young rural people. This will take place Christmas Eve at around 11am. Listen out for the Christmas music and sirens.... In the event that we are called to an emergency the Christmas music will stop and the siren will be constant. All this will be subject to weather and covid restrictions. If you live in the Rural area with young kids drop us a message so we are sure not to miss you!
02.01.2022 This morning a crew from Kayuga caught up with Wybong Brigade and Group 1 at Wybong station for a joint training session all about first aid, CPR and MVA safety. It was a terrific morning and everyone was able to learn something. A huge shout out to SDC Kylie and FF Amy from Darlington Rural Fire Brigade for coming up to our end of the valley to facilitate the workshop and sharing their expertise. ... Also thank you to Wybong for their hospitality and BBQ breakfast and our SDC Jayden for organising the day. Photo courtesy of Kylie Ledger (Darlington).
