24.01.2022 As the pandemic continues around the world, the threat of a COVID-19 outbreak in Western Australia is something that we need to be prepared for. Even if it's un...likely, it's vital that we have the protections in place that we need for the worst case scenario. So, in line with health advice, from 5 December, particular WA venues and businesses will be required to maintain mandatory contact registers to support COVID-19 contact tracing. These records will ONLY be used for the purpose of contact tracing, should it be required, and will only be kept for 28 days. Businesses or venues required to keep a contact register include: Food and licenced venues (restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, taverns, nightclubs) Gyms, indoor sporting centres and pools Places of worship and funeral parlours Beauty and personal care services including hairdressers and barbers Galleries and museums Cinemas, theatres and other entertainment venues Auction houses and real estate inspections Community facilities, libraries and halls Zoos and amusement parks Function centres Accommodation facilities that already have check-in arrangements in place (i.e. hostels, hotels, large camp grounds) The details required for the contact register will include the date, arrival time, names and telephone numbers. Any person aged 16 years and over who attends a business, place or premises, listed above, including patrons, staff, volunteers and contractors will be required to register their contact details. Records are not required to be collected for people collecting takeaway or children under 16 years. To help make checking in to venues as easy as possible and reduce the burden on businesses, we've released a free app, SafeWA. SafeWA is a digital COVID-19 contact register system, which uses unique QR codes for venues that patrons can scan to register their attendance. You can get the app now on Android or iPhone at https://safewa.health.wa.gov.au The app is a free, easy, contactless solution, but it is not mandatory. Alternative formats for contact registers are available, including other electronic tools or a paper-based system, depending on what is suitable for the business, venue or individual. This step to reintroduce contact registers was considered in consultation with industry and business to establish a long term strategy to keep our State safe, given the ongoing impact of the virus internationally. More information on contact registers and the SafeWA app can be found at www.wa.gov.au/safewa We've done so well as a State - and we've achieved so much by following the advice and working together. Contact registers might not always be convenient, but we know that in the event of an outbreak they would make a huge difference. Together, by following these guidelines staying vigilant, we can keep WA safe and strong.

23.01.2022 This morning I can now announce our next cautious and safe step as part of WA's controlled interstate border. Subject to no further outbreaks occurring and base...d on updated Chief Health Officer advice, Victoria and New South Wales will be classified as 'very low risk' states from 12.01am, Tuesday, December 8. The transition to the new category can occur, following a review by our Chief Health Officer after Victoria surpassed 28 days of no community cases and New South Wales is due to reach that milestone this Friday. As a result, WA's controlled interstate border will be safely adjusted, with travel from Victoria and New South Wales to be permitted into WA with the following conditions: - all Perth Airport arrivals to undergo a health screening and temperature test on arrival - travellers to be prepared to take a COVID-19 test at the airport COVID clinic, if deemed necessary by a health clinician (voluntary asymptomatic testing available for all airport arrivals) - completion of a G2G Pass declaration, stipulating they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms and which jurisdictions the traveller has been in over the previous 14 days - all travellers to receive a SMS health check reminder one week into their stay in WA - all land arrivals to be met at the border checkpoint, for a health screening and to have their G2G Pass declaration checked. Other jurisdictions currently in the ‘very low risk’ category include the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania. The significantly improved situation in Victoria and New South Wales has been fantastic news for all Australians, and now it means that we can take this cautious next step. However, at this stage, South Australia will remain classified as a ‘medium risk’ jurisdiction. This classification will be reviewed again by December 11. Travel from South Australia remains prohibited unless travellers meet strict exemption criteria. Exempt travellers must also self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Western Australia. Please note that those conditions apply to anyone who has been in South Australia in the previous 14 days. This also includes transit through South Australia, via road or air. Like always, we’re continuing to follow our State’s expert health advice. Our border controls have worked and allowed us to stay safe and return to a new normal throughout this pandemic, to get our economy going and people back in work. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during this extremely difficult time. I know it's been a long wait, and I'm so glad we can now safely allow more of our friends and family over east to travel into WA. Our careful and cautious approach has kept our State safe and strong and we will continue to take that approach going forward.

23.01.2022 Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic has always been first and foremost about protecting the health and safety of Western Australians. We’ve followed the exper...t health advice, and for the last seven months, our hard border has kept Western Australia safe and strong. Today, in line with the latest advice from the Chief Health Officer, I can announce that WA will soon cautiously transition to a controlled interstate border. I’d like to take a moment of your time to run through what this means. Pending ongoing health advice, this change will take effect at 12:01am on Saturday 14 November. However, we will be closely monitoring the situation over east and if we need to delay this introduction of the controlled border, then we will. Also, I will have no hesitation to reintroduce our hard border in the future if that’s what’s needed to keep us safe. This hasn’t been an easy year for anyone. But for many Western Australians, the hard border has been particularly challenging. I’d like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience over these months particularly those who have been separated from their loved ones by the border. I know how hard it has been my own parents and brother live in New South Wales. It’s been extremely difficult not knowing when I will be able to see them again. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve maintained a cautious and careful approach based on WA’s expert health advice from the Chief Health Officer. That advice has served us well as we have embarked on our own, unique recovery. Today, based on that health advice and the rates of local infection in the eastern states, we are now at the next step of our journey. I want every Western Australian to know that we would not be proceeding down this path unless we had the health advice that it was safe to do so. The time is right, the conditions are right, and I’m confident our controlled border arrangement strikes the right balance. These are cautious, considered and careful steps. The existing hard border exemption system will be removed and replaced with the controlled interstate border regime, established on an updated nationwide health-based threshold that allows for safe travel into Western Australia from interstate with conditions, and subject to trigger points being met. The Chief Health Officer has recommended a 14-day rolling average of less than five community cases per day in each state and territory be required before progressing to the new border controls. This condition is currently being met. Under this system, travel from ‘very low risk’ states and territories will be permitted, with conditions on arrival including declarations, temperature tests and possible COVID-19 testing. These jurisdictions currently include Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory because they have had no community cases for more than 28 days. Travel from ‘low risk’ states and territories also permitted, with similar conditions on arrival, in addition to 14 days of self-quarantine and a mandatory Day 11 COVID-19 test. These jurisdictions currently include New South Wales and Victoria because they have less than five community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average. Failure to follow these directions or providing false information will be enforceable by law, with penalties ranging from $1,000 infringements, to up to $50,000 fines for individuals. These are safe, steady and sensible steps. But should the situation change once again, I will not hesitate to return to hard border arrangements if that is what is required to protect the health and safety of Western Australians. In the meantime, we need to continue to take personal responsibility. The virus hasn’t been defeated around the world we must work together to prevent outbreaks and not jeopardise what we’ve achieved so far. The controlled border still includes important and strong protections for our State, but within it we must also maintain our vigilance to keep our State safe and strong. All Western Australians must embrace COVID-safe principles. That means acting responsibly and following the health advice. Thank you again to all Western Australians for the sacrifices you have made this year. We’re the envy of the world for so many reasons. We have a long way to go, and many challenges still to face. But right now, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.

15.01.2022 RESTART OF KAMBALDA NICKEL MINES TO CREATE 200 JOBS The restart of nickel mining at Kambalda - the scene of Australia's first nickel boom in the 1960s - is set ...to create 200 new jobs. Nickel miner Mincor Resources has approved a $97 million restart plan, four years after the last nickel mine at Kambalda closed. Mining is set to begin before the end of the year. Mincor managing director David Southam says the decision heralds an exciting new era for Kambalda. "We are now on the cusp of realising our vision to resume profitable and sustainable nickel sulphide mining in the Kambalda district, and to do so in an environmentally responsible and ethical manner that will see this great nickel province return to the forefront of Class-1 nickel production globally, he said. "We are doing this at a particularly exciting time in the nickel market as a new wave of nickel demand emerges, driven by the electrification of the global transport fleet and the rapid growth of the lithium-ion battery industry globally. These trends have only accelerated in recent months, spurred on by post-COVID Government stimulus programs, and I expect that our production restart timetable will be well aligned with current market trends. Last year, Mincor struck a deal with BHP to restart its Kambalda nickel concentrator, with the first nickel-in-concentrate production scheduled for early 2022.

10.01.2022 The inconsistent and often extreme prices for regional airfares are a major barrier for people living across WA. They just aren't fair. It's a fact of life for ...people in regional WA - sometimes you just have to make a trip to Perth. Whether to access medical services, see family or conduct business. So we have a plan: a re-elected McGowan Labor Government will cap regional airfares for residents to and from Perth, right across WA. Over the past four years we've worked with airlines to provide a number of discounted, subsidised airfares to regional locations. In all those cases, we've seen great takeup, and great outcomes for the local community. Now, we want to go one step further, and cap prices for all regional locations for local residents. Under our plan, fares from locations within 1000km of Perth by road will be capped at $199 one-way. From locations over 1000km away, they will be capped at $299. If we're re-elected we will work with all commercial airlines to make this a reality, with $19.8 million committed to the initiative. I am focused on doing everything we can to ease the burden on regional residents - this plan will make sure that regional West Aussies are able to get to and from Perth when they need to travel at a fair price. It's the right thing to do - and it will help to keep regional WA communities strong.

08.01.2022 Introducing our first Local Speaker Amy Astill! Amy is a persistent advocate in the Goldfields and the Operations Coordinator at the Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre. In 2017, Amy was one of fifteen young women to win a nationwide competition known as ‘Country to Canberra’, where she gained an insight into the impact that politics has on every member of the Australian community. On her return, Amy joined the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Youth Council and subsequently serv...ed as the Youth Mayor of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for two years. After surviving a car accident, she made it her mission to begin advocating for her community, despite being told that she was too young, too regional, and too female to make any real change for the Goldfields. Amy went on to found the Goldfields Youth Forum and the John Paul College Mentoring Program, as well as represent the Goldfields in state-wide platforms, including the Western Australian Youth Awards and the 25th Western Australian Youth Parliament. At 19 years old, Amy is passionate about the voices of youth and other minority groups and believes that politics is the platform in which these people can finally be heard. See more
