22.01.2022 Dahlia nutters alert. I have been asked how I set up a propagation bench. So I have put a few images together with comments. Don’t panic and think this is neces...sary for all, a small heated propagator is good or a pot with compost covered with a plastic bag. This is Dahlia Nutters stuff. My my set ups stay in situ all the time so after propagating the benches can be used as normal. All the best good luck and good fortune. This is my mist propagation set up I have a similar bigger bench for my tuber bed. Without the mist See more

21.01.2022 Tubers starting to show a bit of life now and starting to fill up
20.01.2022 Another purchase I made a number of years ago was a Sulfume Vapouriser which I have on a timer it comes on for 1 hour every evening. It keeps the greenhouse fre...e from bugs including sciaridae fly commonly known as fungus Gnats. Sulphur crystals are placed in to the cup supplied with the sulfume Vapouriser then placed on the heating element in the unit. See more

18.01.2022 SPLITTING TUBERS TUTORIAL
17.01.2022 Got the new bigger greenhouse benches built just in time for lifting, washing and trimming tubers. Oh how I love this time of the year But a lot easier now wit...h wider benches, although not quite halfway through the 640 odd tubers, seems never ending this year. Still, had an early Christmas present from Hotbox, yesterday, two new bigger heat mats. Just need to re-site the electrics, and I'll be happy as Larry See more

16.01.2022 Just clearing out some Dahlia stuff and came across this article. Tubers into Wine by the late Maurice Wnite Raiser of Winholme Diane. Go on give it a go.
14.01.2022 When you have two ton of grit sand dropped at the gate who do you call? no not 'Ghost Busters' but the 'A Team' Alisa, Aleks and Alana, grandad will have to get... some shiny pennies out for wages. All my tubers, cuttings and seeds are grown in a mixture of two parts grit sand, one part perlite and one part vermiculite which I like to refer to as the 'Barbarry Mix'. This mixture is very free draining and removes the risk of root rot from overwatering but contains no nutrients, these are applied by a weak solution of Miracle grow whenever watering is required. The downside to this growing medium is that it requires frequent watering which makes it unsuitable if you wish to leave your greenhouse unattended for more than two days during the pre planting period. It is heavier than most conventional composts therefore plastic cells for cuttings or seedlings may have to be 'double bagged' to avoid splitting but to avoid waterlogging make sure that the drainage holes are aligned. I took a few pictures yesterday in the heated propagating greenhouse to show the mix and how things are progressing with tubers and cuttings, taking it steady at the moment as it is still very early but its good to know which tubers have survived storage. 13.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PryD3KY_s8 Here is the Zoom recording on growing for show on 17th Feb 2021. Hope you enjoy, and thank you to Vanessa Penn, Andrew Robinson and Ian Sutherland for your help and contribution to making this happen.
12.01.2022 Just set up my propagation bench today, I take quite a few cutting you might say. My bench can hold in excess of 800 cuttings they cell will be filled by mid Ma...rch. The reason I find the mister invaluable is that I still work full time so would struggle misting by hand several times a day. Please don’t be put off by us nutters taking hundreds of cuttings. The same results can be got on a tiny scale using a small pot and a well drained rooting medium covered with a plastic bag tent. This is nutter Dahlia growing amounts please don’t be put off. Good luck and good fortune See more

01.01.2022 Hi newbie here , growing these cuttings on for pot tubers to plant out in 4 pots , do I pinch them out when they have 4 pairs of leaves or just let them go ?
01.01.2022 Like most growers in the UK if the tubers are sourced from plants grown from seed or cuttings I do not divide them but plunge the entire tuber into a growing me...dium and place them onto the soil warming cables. My preference is to use individual pots as shown in the first picture, after a couple of weeks it is advisable to inspect them more closely. In this instance the eyes have appeared but I am not happy with the finger of tuber not in the growing medium and the grey mould forming on the remnants of the now woody stem. The finger of tuber is removed before it starts to shrivel and the wound treated with old rooting powder which contains a fungicide and will also dry the wound. Yellow sulphur is dusted onto the grey mould on the woody stem and the pot replaced onto its position on the soil warming cable. See more
