19.01.2022 The October Council meeting saw some important decisions made for local residents. You may have received my email regarding the Council rejection of the draft housing strategy. This decision means that targets for new housing will revert to those already within our existing Local Environmental Plans. Good news for community organisations, with Councillors approving $119,860 in funding for the 2020-2021 financial year through the Council’s community grants scheme. The Counci...l also gave the green light for a detailed design to be developed for the new synthetic sportsfield at Norman Griffiths Sportsground West Pymble. Additionally, the Council adopted a Heritage Strategy for Ku-ring-gai to support long term protection for heritage items now and in the future. 18.01.2022 Some residents might be wondering why there is currently scaffolding on the Council Chambers at 818 Pacific Highway Gordon. The original Chambers building dates back to 1928, seen here when it opened in this picture by renowned local photographer Harold Cazneaux, with later additions built in the 70s and 80s. In line with the heritage conservation management plan prepared for the building, the original Spanish style roof tiles are now being taken off, cleaned and then reinstalled after structural repairs are carried out on the roof. The fascia, gutters and eaves of the original building are also being repaired or replaced so that it will celebrate its centenary in 2028 in sound condition.

17.01.2022 Following last summers tragic fires in Australia, Mayor Bernard Delattre and the people of Pozieres, our French friendly city, generously fundraised and donated $2,172.18 to the bushfire appeal as a gesture of sympathy and solidarity, suggesting it go to native animal welfare. Council has donated this to WIRES which undertook over 26,000 rescues of sick, injured or orphaned native animals between September and May alone. Global community support following the severe drought and massive bushfires has enabled WIRES to provide national emergency support with licensed wildlife carers, groups and vets, critical koala research and national habitat regeneration projects in partnership with Landcare.

17.01.2022 We continue to be on high alert and the spread of COVID-19 in Victoria means we must be on our guard more than ever. Premier Berejiklian is urging everyone in NSW to wear masks in public places such as shops and public transport, or where they cannot socially distance safely. There are testing clinics at the following locations in Ku-ring-gai: A drive through testing clinic at 28 Stanhope Road Killara no appointment needed The Hillview Community Health Centre at 1334 Pa...cific Highway Turramurra no appointment needed The Northshore Respiratory Testing Clinic at 132 Pacific Highway Roseville appointments only. If you feel unwell, please get tested and self-isolate until you receive the results. See more

17.01.2022 Here are some of the important decisions from last weeks Council meeting: the tender to build the new playground at Kissing Point Village Green was awarded and work will start shortly. This playground has gained a $50,000 grant from the NSW Government through its Everybody Can Play program, ensuring that children with a disability have accessible playgrounds. The Council has also updated its Access and Disability Inclusion plan for the next four years and this will go on public exhibition for comment. We are committed to ensuring equal access to Council facilities for all our residents. Additionally Council voted on a Notice of Motion from Cr Peter Kelly regarding a DA for Roseville RSL Club redevelopment and Council resolved to write a submission to the Sydney North Planning Panel who are the consent authority for the development.

16.01.2022 As everyone who lives here knows, Ku-ring-gai is a unique and distinctive place. The Council's planning team would like your help in defining what makes it so. Comments close on 13 November and details are below

16.01.2022 An important update regarding last night's Council decision on Ku-ring-gai's draft housing strategy. https://bit.ly/33VojpE

16.01.2022 Ku-ring-gai Council has been recognised for a fifth year receiving a gold award for the excellent standard of its 2018-2019 Annual Report. The Australasian Reporting Awards are open to all public and private industry sectors in Australia and Asia and are an opportunity for organisations to benchmark their reports against world best practice for annual reports. Our annual report was again recognised for the high quality coverage of Councils performance and achievements during the 2018-2019 financial year. This fifth gold shows our consistent dedication to high quality annual reporting delivering open and honest information to our community and other stakeholders.

16.01.2022 As Patron of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter, I support and endorse their Safe Place Appeal, which is to find the Shelter a permanent new home before their lease expires in three months. As a gesture of the Councils support I have made a total donation of $3214 from the 2019-2020 mayoral donation budget. The Shelter needs to raise $200,000 to achieve its goal. Your support is invaluable and at this time of crisis, has never been more needed. The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai W...omen's Shelter offers refuge to women escaping domestic violence on the North Shore. In the last year 321 incidents of domestic violence were reported in the local area and the Shelter helped rehouse 46 women. It is not too late to make a donation to this important organisation at the Turramurra or Lindfield Community branches of the Bendigo Bank or by clicking on this link - https://bit.ly/2N7hrgZ See more

14.01.2022 Im very pleased that St Ives Showground has been successful in gaining $88,000 worth of funding through the NSW Governments COVID-19 Stimulus Package. The grant will go towards upgrading the power supply at the Showground and work starts next week. The Stimulus Package is aimed at improving all 137 NSW showgrounds and boosting local economies as a result. Our Showground is one of the most popular in Sydney and hosts a wide range of events and activities such as show jumping. Find out more at www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/showground

14.01.2022 Ku-ring-gai’s Wildflower Garden has received a high commendation from Keep Australia Beautiful for its online education programs for children during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown. During April and May, the Garden staff moved the Junior Rangers after school program online and created a new @Home program of nature based activities. Congratulations to everyone involved in this project!

13.01.2022 The Council voted at the end of July to defer a decision on Ku-ring-gai’s Housing Strategy for two months. The Strategy, which is a NSW Government requirement for all councils, aims to plan for housing needs and new development in our area to cater for a growing population and provide more housing choice, consistent with advice from the NSW Department Of Planning And Infrastructure and the Greater Sydney Commission. Following impassioned correspondence to councillors from local MPs Alister Henskens and Jonathan O’Dea, urging rejection of the draft housing strategy, Council voted to seek clarification from Premier Berejiklian as to the Government’s expectations for future housing targets in Ku-ring-gai. You can read my letter to the Premier and find out more about the Housing Strategy below

12.01.2022 My Mayoral Appeal is open now for donations to Lifeline’s Christmas hampers. This year more than ever there are people in our community experiencing financial hardship, social isolation or trying to cope with varying levels of distress. Tinned food, biscuits, cakes and unwrapped new gifts for children can be donated at the Council’s customer service centre at 818 Pacific Highway Gordon or any Ku-ring-gai library until 5pm Monday 14 December. Thank you for your donation!

12.01.2022 Worried about over development in Ku-ring-gai? On Tuesday this week, the NSW Minister for Planning Rob Stokes responded to my letter to Premier Berejiklian seeking clarification of Councils obligations to meet Greater Sydney Commission housing targets, following our decision to defer consideration of the draft Housing Strategy for two months. Minister Stokes has confirmed that there is no legal requirement placed upon Council and that ultimately it is up to Council to determ...ine its dwelling numbers in line with community expectations. You can read the Ministers letter and the Councils media release at www.kmc.nsw.gov.au The Greater Sydney Commission was established by a State Act of Parliament in 2015 to plan for population growth and new housing across metropolitan Sydney. In March this year the Greater Sydney Commission told Ku-ring-gai to prepare a housing plan to accommodate 3,600 new dwellings in 6-10 years, equating to 10,000 more residents. As Mayor, I welcome Minister Stokes letter and the clarity it has provided to Council. The Council can now consider if the existing capacity within our current development controls meets community expectations. The Council will meet on Tuesday 23 September from 7pm and decide on a way forward. You can watch the meeting at http://www.kmc.nsw.gov.au//Mee/Council_Meeting_live_stream

12.01.2022 On its launch date, I promptly downloaded the COVIDSafe tracing app onto my phone. It is clear to me that social distancing, staying home, testing and tracing have saved our country from the terrible toll that coronavirus is inflicting on other nations. Downloading the COVIDSafe app means your privacy is protected by law. The Federal Minister for Health, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, has put in place protections that restrict access to app data to health authorities only. It will be a criminal offence to use the apps data in any other way. Therefore I encourage everyone in Ku-ring-gai to download the app and help keep our community safe.

11.01.2022 A reminder that applications for Ku-ring-gai COVID-19 Community Organisation Hardship and Assistance Grants close on Sunday 17 May. Grants of up to $5,000 are available to help vulnerable residents in Ku-ring-gai, or those experiencing hardship as a result of the COVID-19. More information: https://bit.ly/2W3YwJl

11.01.2022 Here are some of the important decisions from last week’s Council meeting: the tender to build the new playground at Kissing Point Village Green was awarded and work will start shortly.

11.01.2022 The award winning Eryldene Historic House and Garden in Gordon is looking for a honorary treasurer. The Eryldene Trust is a public trust that needs someone to process payments as well as lodging BAS and reporting to the Board. If this sounds of interest to you, contact [email protected]

10.01.2022 The Upper North Shore Volunteer of the Year Awards are open for nominations until Friday 3 July. The COVID-19 situation has shown just how important volunteers are in our community and this is a great opportunity to recognise them! There are so many deserving people who would be worthy of nominating perhaps you are one of those or know someone who is? If so you can submit your nomination at www.volunteering.com.au/volunteer-awards

10.01.2022 Im pleased to announce 23 local community organisations will benefit from the Councils COVID-19 grants. From delivering meals and childcare, partnering with local businesses to provide food hampers or offering mental health support for those people experiencing distress, these organisations are doing wonderful work in the community. These grants will help organisations get through the crisis and continue serving our residents. More details - https://bit.ly/2zt3F56

10.01.2022 It was an honour to be a guest speaker, together with Trent Zimmerman, Federal Member of Parliament for North Sydney, at the inaugural meeting of the merged Chatswood Roseville Rotary Club held recently via Zoom. I was pleased to be able to acknowledge both Clubs individual past achievements and to toast the merged Clubs future.

09.01.2022 Council conducted its first meeting online in April, following changes adopted due to COVID-19. Im pleased to say that the technology successfully enabled Council business to proceed and some important decisions were made. The Council has pledged $100,000 in grants with more to be considered if needed for community organisations providing support to residents during COVID-19, or experiencing hardship as a result of the pandemic. The submission of the planning proposal fo...r the Lindfield Village Hub to the NSW Department of Planning for assessment and determination was unanimously adopted. And the tenderer for the long awaited St Ives youth precinct and community hall upgrade was approved, meaning work will soon start on this exciting project for Ku-ring-gais young people. 09.01.2022 To commemorate Remembrance Day at 11am, I had the honour of reading via Zoom ‘Anzac Ted’ from Gordon Library and reciting The Ode to pre-school children from Goodstart Early Learning Centre.

08.01.2022 Yesterday it was my pleasure to witness a smoking ceremony conducted by Brendan Kerin of the Gamaraigal people of the Eora Nation, at the site of what will become the Lindfield Village Green. I also turned the first sod as they say in the construction industry! Brendan gave an evocative description of what the smoking ceremony means for indigenous people and how it is a wonderfully affirming act for the new Village Green. I hope you enjoy the video highlights of the ceremony.

07.01.2022 Last nights Council meeting saw us pay tribute upon the passing of two gentlemen who both served their communities so well. Phillip Langley was a lifelong resident of Ku-ring-gai and a committed volunteer, from his local church at Killara through to the Friends of Ku-ring-gai Environment community group. In addition we marked the passing of a great friend of Australia Dr Patrick Simon, who was Mayor of the French town of Villers-Bretonneux. Dr Simon died last week from comp...lications arising from COVID-19 and one of his final acts before his death was fundraising for Australias bushfire recovery. In this he was aided by another great friend of Australia and Ku-ring-gai, the Mayor of Pozieres Bernard Delattre. Both Mr. Langley and Dr. Simon will be greatly missed. At our meeting, the Council also decided to pause the Turramurra Community Hub project. More information about this decision can be found at www.kmc.nsw.gov.au See more

06.01.2022 Im delighted to announce that our Council has been successful in gaining $398,000 of funding through the NSW Governments Streets as Shared Spaces program. This is for a cycleway in Gilroy Road Turramurra, connecting Karuah Park with the Turramurra centre. The grant will also help fund safer crossings at Brentwood Avenue and Gilroy Road for both pedestrians and cyclists. To find out more about cycling in Ku-ring-gai visit www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/cycling

06.01.2022 Our Council met last night to decide some important issues for our community. Following impassioned correspondence from local MPs Alister Henskens and Jonathan O'Dea urging Council not to adopt our draft Housing Strategy, we have deferred the matter for two months to seek clarification from Premier Berejiklian on Councils obligations to meet housing targets and to further consider submissions received from residents. The planning proposal for Eastern Road Tennyson Road Tur...ramurra was adopted by Council. This has been the subject of much debate in the community, both for and against. Its important to note that the planning proposal must now be followed by a development application from Harris Farm, and the community will have a further opportunity to give their view once this is submitted. We thanked Jennifer Harvey for her outstanding contribution since 2004 as a member of the Councils Heritage Committee and vale to Loraine Unicombe, who sadly passed away recently after a lifetime of dedicated volunteering for local netball. See more

06.01.2022 Im pleased to see our community facilities are gradually reopening as the NSW Government eases COVID-19 restrictions. This includes our customer service centre in Gordon, libraries for collection of pre-reserved items through the Click and Collect service and the Wildflower Gardens visitor centre and nursery. Council sportsfields, playgrounds, outdoor gyms, St Ives skate park and tennis courts have also reopened. Please follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines - head to our website for more details - http://bit.ly/33sKLGo

06.01.2022 As Patron of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter, I offer my support and endorsement to their Safe Place fundraiser which was announced this week. The goal is to obtain a permanent home for the Shelter before their lease expires in three months by raising $200,000 by 30 June. They are being supported in this through the Turramurra and Lindfield branches of the Bendigo Bank. The Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women's Shelter offers refuge to women escaping domestic violence on Sydney's North Shore. In the last year 321 incidents of domestic violence were reported in the local area and the Shelter has helped rehouse 46 women as a result. The link for donations is at https://bit.ly/2N7hrgZ

06.01.2022 Here are some important decisions that came out of the Council meeting on 30 June. The Council considered a detailed report on the Harris Farms proposal for 45-47 Tennyson Avenue and 105 Eastern Road, Turramurra. After lengthy debate the matter lapsed and the planning proposal will be considered again at the next Council meeting on 28 July. The Council voted to accept the recommended tender for the Abingdon Road playground upgrade and work will soon start on this new playgrou...nd in Roseville. And in welcome news to lift everyones spirits, the proposed Spring Flowers Celebration in Roseville and Turramurra this September and October was approved. See more

05.01.2022 I have been impressed by how Council has been able to adapt so many programs and services during these times including the Ku-ring-gai Art Centre that has been holding virtual exhibitions and tours to showcase tutor and student artworks. The latest exhibition, Fur, Feathers and All Things Small, celebrates our furry and feathered friends which play a huge part in our daily lives. Visit the Art Centre's Facebook page to be inspired - www.facebook.com/kuringgaiartcentre

05.01.2022 An important message about the Council decision this week to reject Ku-ring-gai’s draft housing strategy https://bit.ly/2IY52NN

05.01.2022 At the Council meeting last night I proposed some changes to make it easier and quicker for restaurants and other food providers to apply for an outdoor dining permit, which the Council voted to adopt. The Council also adopted a new plan on communicating development proposals and approvals. Now that most planning applications are lodged online through the NSW Government’s planning e-portal and the government no longer requires them to be advertised in newspapers, we will no...w advertise DAs and other planning matters on the Council website and through our e-news. We’ll still send letters to affected residents in the vicinity of a development proposal, but the decision last night reflects the state government’s initiative and the changing ways people are obtaining information. Another important report was received on how the Council will fund the maintenance and repair of roads and footpaths, as well as the redevelopment of our town centres. It’s a complex issue with replacement costs far outweighing available budgets unless new funding sources are found. You can read the meeting minutes in full here: bit.ly/33PFVkX See more

05.01.2022 Its National Volunteer Week and its never been more important in these uncertain times to acknowledge and thank our volunteers. In Ku-ring-gai the wonderful volunteers from Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury, Ku-ring-gai Neighbourhood Centre, Meals on Wheels NSW and Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Community Transport have been fantastic in supporting our local community. For more information about community support available in the local area, go to kmc.nsw.gov.au/lifeonline

03.01.2022 I was honoured to be invited to be a part of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shed Zoom event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Unfortunately 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and the Pink Sari movement is encouraging more women from South East Asian backgrounds to get regular check ups. I thank the Women’s Shed who due to COVID-19 have been operating online for seven months, assisting women at a time when social connection and support have never been more important.

03.01.2022 Testing and tracing is an important part of keeping our community free of COVID-19. NSW Health has opened a testing clinic in Roseville near the Roseville Cinema. Testing is by appointment and you can park in the public car park behind the cinema. If you are experiencing any cold or flu type symptoms, no matter how minor, I recommend you attend the clinic and get tested. Results are referred to your GP and the public health unit if follow up is required. To book in for a test call the clinic on 0434 189 047.

03.01.2022 This month the Council has introduced three electric vehicles to its fleet. The two vans and a car are already busy delivering supplies and being used by staff for site visits. 02.01.2022 Im pleased to announce that Council has been awarded $1.7 million grant for St Ives Showground improvements. This is the second grant awarded to St Ives Showground this year, with a previous grant of $88,000 put towards new lighting in the main arena and surrounding areas. The NSW Government grant will be used for substantial improvements to the Showground buildings and infrastructure and support jobs in the local area. The Council has already committed $1.8 million to build...ing a large new accessible playground at the Showground, which is under construction and will be completed by October this year. The funding is a welcome boost for the Showground and uplifting for the whole community. Work on upgrading the Showgrounds access roads will begin within the next few weeks. We expect that the upgrades will all be completed by the end of this year. More information at kmc.nsw.gov.au

01.01.2022 Congratulations to the volunteers of Eryldene Historic House and Garden in McIntosh Street Gordon, who are the recipients of a prestigious award this year from the International Camellia Society.
